anecdotal, but if you search on youtube for ‘naomi wu’, the first 3 results are Vaush, Rebecca Watson and Keffals with some anti-Chinese gov videos from a month ago, so I’m assuming there’s some shared judgement/agenda by those streamers to highlight negative stories about China

This really sucked because I like Naomi Wu and was trying to find out what happened, but can’t get the rundown without it just being chalked up to “authoritarian CCP no free speech” from all the worst people on youtube.

On that note, wtf actually happened does anyone know?

AFAIK she got talked to in a police station and decided to pull back her output for the time being. She was trying to white hat a security vulnerability that affected a lot of Chinese devices, but the story got picked up by anti-China tech blogs, and the association stuck to her even though she’s been generally pro-China in the past. It’s not great but it also isn’t the secret police spiriting her away to a labor camp for ten years.

Really aren’t supposed to make exploits you discover public until after you have notified all the proper authorities and waited a specified amount of time to give the effected vendors time to get things patched if possible. Even in the US, just making this stuff public without following these best practices will get you visited by the FBI because they will be wondering if you are naive and need a talking to or you are some kind of agent of chaos wanting to see the world burn.

edit: to cover your ass and prevent companies from trying to pull this shit it’s best to at the same time file a report with the CISA if in the US or the CAC if in China via their websites in addition to making a CVE report.

IIRC she told the company first, but they called the authorities on her, which was the start of the trouble.

Ugggh. I hate it when companies pull that shit. Just wastes law enforcements time and tarnishes the companies reputation. It always backfires spectacularly but some of them still try it rather than saying “thank you” and maybe paying a bug bounty reward to encourage people to not just sell the information to a certain Israeli cyber-weapons firm. Apple used to be famous for doing this shit and even they eventually caved after realizing it was counter productive.

It’s shitty. Hunting down bugs and exploits is a clear social good, but capitalists view it as a threat bc it’s often expensive to mitigate the exploit, especially if it’s hardware or firmware. Getting the cops involved in just dirty. The cops very likely don’t have any sympathy for a random white-hat hacker trying to do a good thing, especially once they get in to a “threat to national security” attitude. I hope Naomi is okay. She’s really vulnerable as an out lesbian and just being an outrageously stylish person. : p

His way of pretending to be an anarchist has always included being fully on board with the right wing of Amerika’s slightly less right wing party, i don’t see how this changes anything about his philistine charade.

Well he also told Hakim that the US should have bombed Iraq more, so i’m not really surprised that the chauvinist ghoul doesn’t push back against an Amerikan war criminal and mass murderer.

He was one of a number of artists and writers that were selected by federal programs intended to derail socialist messaging in art and literature, usually under the banner of “postmodernism” but not exclusive to it. Basically, Soviet art and literature at the time had rather clear and direct messaging that frightened the ruling class of the western world, so the idea was to subsidize and promote and artificially boost the presence of countermessages that amounted to “interpretation is so open ended for this much cooler piece that it could mean anything. Nothing matters btw. It’s very smart to stop caring about sociopolitical issues and just consume art product.”

For clarity - That period in American art wasn’t 100% a CIA op, but the CIA did contribute to some university art (and literature) programs and some specific individuals and publications to give it more social standing and legitimacy. It’s also one of those “Yeah they admit to it on their website they’re really proud of it” conspiracies.

A lot of what the alphabet orgnaizations do is nudging. It isn’t always high profile assassinations. It’s shit like promoting certain subreddits. The head mod of /r/technology was once outed as a fucking general for example.

Another recent example is all of the “advisory” nudging in capeshit where the US military gets to command how the capeshit plays out.

I feel kinda bad for andy warhol. Like, he was trying to make art and he did, with some interesting messages. If there was just someone to reel him in he would have probably lived longer. It’s not entirely his fault the CIA made his art a weapon. It does also suck how obsessed with fame he was.
