Ngl that lemmy home page is offputting to non-techy users
The join-lemmy one? Yeah, that looks straight up aimed at coders, like the landing page of a framework
Yes, lemmy does not work for non-techy stuff. Sometimes I want to look up random stuff like getting the best sim plan for international travel or what are the best apps for tracking weight lifting workouts. That kind of stuff is not available if the mainstream is not here. And thus reddit is unfortunately still needed.
what are the best apps for tracking weight lifting workouts
I’ve been looking for one as well. I’ve been using Progression for a few years and it has been decent.
That is actually the one I have been using too! But I always keep searching for if there are better ones. Progression would be perfect if they added exercise images, since I am a visual person, and tend to forget how an exercise is done.
Would love to see the developer to move his discussion to Lemmy.
It’ll happen with time, but yeah, reddit has had a decade to have any interest about anything to be posted on their platform
I hope so. In the meantime I would love to see a proxy to/from reddit, kind of like how there is bird.makeup for following Twitter people in Mastodon. I don’t care if the discussion on Lemmy doesn’t go back into reddit. It would make the transition easier anyway.
Someone has (or had?) a bot that would repost threads from popular reddit subs. Always saw them in new but without any comments or upvotes. It didn’t interest me, seemed artificial.
I think Lemmy just needs to keep growing organically for now as instance operators and the code devs figure out the scaling problem.
Yes, sure. But it would be cool if we had “proxy” communities for some of the non-techy stuff that I can subscribe to. Just so I can keep in tabs with updates on my favorite workout app, etc.
And if that proxied community ever transitioned over, they could just take over the community.
That’s not strictly true, now. I found a good fountain pen community, and a few for knitting and embroidery, among other analog interests. Not everything is here, but the non-tech stuff is starting to trickle in.
It’s frustrating when so often techy people produce something but don’t go the slight extra distance to anticipate the needs of normal people getting inducted into using the software. You see it all the time.
Every Linux distro until pretty damn recently…
Reddit third party apps migrating to Lemmy might address this
I’m using jerboa and it’s fine? Can see all the active threads in the Fediverse.
It’ll ask for an instance and the user won’t have a clue
Maybe.
I tried the “old Reddit” Lemmy website today. The first thing it asks you for is a URL? What? I just loaded a URL!
I mean, I get it but it is not a great new user experience.
I also use Voyager which makes Lemmy look like Apollo ( the Reddit iOS app ). It is much smarter as it gives you read only content by default. You only get confronted to use a Lemmy server when you go to post. Before that, you can browse, read, and search without logging in or choosing a server. It is a vastly better introduction.
You can first build something you like using yourself, but at some point you should start holding it under the nose of various well-meaning not-so-techy people and watch how they try to use it.
Too bad as I just found it a week ago, but totally understandable.
Teddit went out in style with that message. Thank you dev, I used teddit often. Forgive me keeping the bookmark on my toolbar just for a few more days.
Thank you! ❤️ I’m not the dev of teddit, I just run this instance, but it still means a lot to me. I hope you found it useful while it lasted!
mlmym.org mimics oldreddit. I was turned on to it this morning, please spread the word. It’s like going home. it pulls from whatever lemmy you’re using so you don’t have to worry about losing your stuff.
Tried it last few days and I kind of like it a lot.
Yeah, I am really impressed about it, at first I was thinking about what the use of it would be, kind of wouldn’t make much of a difference. Then I tried it out, and it just feels like home, it’s so much more compact, I really love it, and I’ve used it for a couple of weeks by now :)

Small specialized subs aren’t moving any time soon. That’s all I use reddit for now. Redreader works just fine.
Let me lurk on /c/bonehurtingjuice already!
Then create those communities here. What’s stopping you?
Nice presumption. I created two of them on lemmy. But engagement is low so far. That’s the problem with niche communities. With one of them it look 5 years for enough subscribers to happen that there was regular content being posted by annoying other than me.
Why are you simping for a company
Why are you still here? For somebody who seems to have such a hard-on for Reddit, you’ve got more activity on Lemmy than half the other active accounts do. Find a hobby, my dude.
It’s all “I hate this” comments, too. Why would you spend all of your time like that? It’s just stupid.
I gave up on Reddit the day Apollo died and haven’t looked back. Lemmy’s a nicer place.
With voyager (formerly wefwef) there is a perfect Apollo alternative for Lemmy
Huh, didn’t realise it’s been renamed to Voyager!
I used to use RIF (and briefly Narwhal) and ended up using Connect.
It’s not quite what I want, but close enough.
Likewise, but with RIF
Same but with Joey… That one held out for a bit longer and I had my hopes up that they figured out a way to keep running somehow
same, but with baconreader. I try to avoid reddit on pc now as well
I’m glad you’re here to make Lemmy a nice place to be.
Cheers, glad to be here with awesome people like yourself :)
❤️
… now kiss…
No, we’re not doing that here.
I came from Sync. I’ll pour one out for you, brother
Same here! I’ve been enjoying Connect as an experience but I am looking forward to Sync for Lemmy. It’s actually the whole reason I came here. I was going to just give up once sync shut down but Lemmy has been a nice transition.
Have you tried Voyager? On my iPhone, it makes Lemmy feel almost exactly like Apollo. You may like it.
Yeah! I quite like it, I’ve been using both Voyager and Memmy —didn’t realise Wefwef had been renamed though!
There’s dozens of us!
Dozens!
I’m a guy like me!
Mario, isayou!
xD good job sussing out the name.
Hope that anyone who was using it and not switching to lemmy is encouraged to do so now.
this is just one of the instances
there are many more instances according to https://farside.link/ (which is a thing that will automatically redirect you to one of them: https://farside.link/teddit/ ) so by using this, you help reduce the load on individual instance, resulting in less “too many requests” errors for everyone. Thanks for introducing me to farside!
The problem still stands, I tried just now a few of those randomly redirected instances, and they’re all still giving Error 429 (Rate Limited). Reddit is on a horrible war path here and realistically the only way out is to just cut oneself off now.
Unfortunate but inevitable given the API changes. I only used teddit for a short time to check on a few subreddits during the protest/blackout period. This really marks the end of me visiting reddit in any form or fashion now.
I’ll stick with kbin, but we’re all friends here. 👍
Kbin is great too! Definitely has its upsides.
Is kbin not just another Lemmy instance? I keep seeing people mention it alongside Lemmy like it’s something different, but it doesn’t seem to be when I look.
The content is the same, as it federates with lemmy, but the server and the code that runs kbin is completely different, it’s written in php while lemmy is written in rust. Kbin also has support for microblogs (like mastodon) so it’s not lemmy at all really, but it can talk with it :)
why kbin over lemmy? havent tested it out much.
For me personally, it’s the cleaner (stock) UI
Found it first.
Kbin includes some mastodon/twitter-like functionality. It also makes public what you vote for and the interface is subjectively nicer. It also have PWA support for the main websites.
However, it doesn’t have app support right now. There’s significantly more development on that front with Lemmy.
While I am posting from a lemmy account (because I didn’t know about kbin when I made it) if I was to host one of the two it would be kbin. The reason is that lemmy has some hardcoded moderation things inside it that I disapprove of. I believe I should be able to say anything I want without fear of being censored on my own self hosted instance and this comes from a leftist, I don’t want to use bad words to insult people, but if I want to use them in a different context I want to be able to. If I see an argument between a bigot and a fellow lgbtq and the bigot calls my comrade with a slur I want to be able to describe the situation using the exact words used. I think maybe it’s a cultural difference thing, where I live using slurs in a context where we describe a situation rather than for insulting someone it’s not seen as a bad thing. We don’t give those words so much power and importance to the point that even just saying the words makes people gasp. I believe that censoring some words by default without even considering the context they are being used in doesn’t help, I believe it just gives the words more power while we should aim to take power away from them.
Also kbin has a much prettier UI in my opinion.
The “slur filter” was causing so much arguing that the devs stopped hard coding it. Now the whoever is running the instance can choose any or no filter.
Ah that’s good.
slur_filter_regex
doesn’t seem to have a value by default, so I don’t understand your point.I might be misinformed then, I’ll have look better into it.
My understanding is the differences are superficial, since they’re both interfaces to activity pub.
That’s the neat part: We’re all browsing the same content.
People who call this whole thing complicated are just, I dunno, incapable of understanding the concept of logging in? It doesn’t matter what door you go in, it’s all (mostly) the same room.
I wouldnt say incapable. Before I joined I was unsure about this whole federation thing as well. I was worried that I have to sign up to multiple instances (and this is actually not untrue, because of defederation) but I worried too much. It’s a lot easier than I imagined
Yeah, before I got into this Fediverse thingy, I too thought that I would have to create bazillions of accounts across different servers and that this is a terrible “business model.” Look where I am now, with a matrix account, lemmy account, and a mastodon account and all the Fedi-thingies. We need to somehow let people understand how the Fediverse works better.
It’s actually a copy of the original room, and there are invisible goblins synchronising all objects in the rooms so that it looks like the same room. They are also moving mannequins so that they match the movements of all the people in the other rooms.
To us it looks and feels like the same room with the same objecs and same people, so it doesn’t really matter.
But sometimes an admin might order that the goblins must not sync one specific room anymore. Then you start to notice differences depending on which door (=room) you actually use.
Maliciously order an goblin?
They’re talking about defederating and trying to make it sound bad.
It is bad if we care about adoption right now
I’m not trying to make it sound bad. Else I’d have used something like “maliciously” or whatever. I’m just trying say that sometimes you might actually see differences (e.g. beehaw.org communities on lemmy.world after defederation), and this is only possible because there are multiple rooms and not just one (with this analogy).
There’s a difference between “incapable of understanding” and “doesn’t have enough background information to understand.” Are there people who can’t understand certain tech concepts? Absolutely. But there are a lot more people who just miss the first rung on the ladder, and can’t make it to the top. They can understand when they get the explanation from the ground up, but until then, they’re stuck.
I see it happen a lot when tech people try to explain something that is brand new to the listener, because when you are already able to understand something at a high level, you forget to mention the first several rungs. It’s usually a great explanation, it’s just not an explanation the person on the ground can use.
…also, I don’t think it’s failure to understand login when every instance asks for a separate login if you don’t navigate there through your own instance. It’s a misunderstanding that results from experiencing the fediverse without understanding how it works, not a failure to grasp an abstract concept.
A week ago, I would have said that’s it’s complicated, but I just login into lemmy.world and I can browse minutes of content!!!
We still need the crowd
yes, I tried bringing some but all I got is a big fat NO sooo we still need to wait
Who? What was their reason?
Reddit, no reason provided
they federate nicely at the end of the day, and that’s what matters
Just so that nobody gets confused, it gets constantly synced, not just at the end of the day. That’s just an unfortunate use of a common saying in this case. :)
Lol! Also worthing noting that federation is not yet working perfectly, and there are legitimate reasons why your choice of instance matters a great deal.
Many instances are not yet properly configured and there is a real barrier to joining and participating in communities on other servers. This is a good thing, because it means that Lemmy can get even better in the future.
To me, Kbin isn’t really ready to be used by the average person. I get a lot of error messages and many communities are missing, no matter which Kbin instance I choose. I’ll move to Kbin when it’s a little more fleshed out. For now, I’ll stick to Lemmy.
I haven’t had any issues.
I wonder if it’s time for someone to spin up a site like https://killedbygoogle.com/ except for Reddit. Maybe killedbyspez.com or killedbyreddit.com?
Is it weird that before getting to the comments I had this exact same thought too?
Genuinely curious how many apps have been killed by this Reddit cull…
Edit: I think it should just be called spezzed.com and list everything that got ‘spezzed’
Do you think it’s spezzed or spezed? i.e two zz or one?
Two zs, otherwise it’d be the past tense of speze.
This is fantastic name! The verb form of fuck /u/spez
So is Lemmy going to stick? Have daily users gone down? I hate to say I stepped back to Reddit because there just isn’t enough content on Lemmy for my taste yet.
Solution to this is to duplicate every Reddit post you create on Lemmy, and tell everyone else to do the same
better solution: instead of creating a reddit post in first place, do it on lemmy. this forces over the long haul people to move because the content and community is there.
True, so how about this: create a Lemmy post, then post the link on Reddit. People eventually get tired of have load a new page every time, and create a Lemmy account
reddit already banned and killed aubreddits who just explained people how to migrate to kbin and lemmy. so i think if you would do that reddit would just start banning people and prevent us from posting any lemmy links. also most users probably wouldn’t bother even clicking on the link since they want the infos directly without having to do a lot of clicks. so it helps more to recommend lemmy to users in comments etc.
Well, I’m doing my best to get the [email protected] community started. Once there is enough activity here, the critical mass becomes self-reinforcing and it takes off.
And it’s not as if all of Reddit will switch over right away - Twitter is still somewhat alive too; but Mastodon gained enough momentum now to actually matter and to be at a sustainable level.
That is the logic most people confuse with socially-focused spaces like the fediverse ecosystem. The point is not to create monopolies but to have a diverse information system so no one node controls the flows. Co-existence is the word. The tough bit is to create a space big enough to create healthy information flow without being too big as to monopolize the neighborhood.
The tough bit is to create a space big enough to create healthy information flow without being too big as to monopolize the neighborhood.
It’s much easier when the administrators of the space have altruistic rather than economic motivations. We just need to make sure that the number of nodes continues to grow organically along with the userbase, and we should be alright.
Subbed
Excellent! Consider me subscribed!
My guess right now is that it won’t be as big as Reddit. I think we’re in an environment where the network effect is so strong that it is extremely difficult for big players to fail. The type of failure and migration we saw from Digg to Reddit doesn’t seem possible now.
But it might be big enough to be a good replacement for more hardcore users. I personally am using both and Lemmy is maybe 40% of my usage and growing.
If you don’t move then you’ll never get more activity, people will move eventually if their favorite apps move to Lemmy or Kbin.
Then advertise and market lemmy. Not by literally going on the street with cart boards “use lemmy Plox”, like even sending a link from Lemmy makes Someone question “why everybody is into Lemmy lately? What is it?
That’s how I found out about Reddit anyways. Don’t underestimate word of mouth.
Oh I have been… or was. Then threads came along lol.
But yeah I want to see Lemmy succeed… I love the Memmy app.
Threads lol. Maybe try Facebook, I hear they even have games!
lol it was something new. It’s already filling up with spam and political garbage. Didn’t take long. Why I’m back to see how Lemmy is doing. I love Lemmy and want to see it explode!
Threads is not a direct threat to Lemmy and never will be. Neither Fedverse. The whole point is that it’s like in the old days, decentralized. You don’t like one server? You go to another. Or you make your own. And big communities will always exist that will want to fuck with whoever opposes basic standards. Just like what happened with Spez/Reddit
Threads came and is already on its way out. Lemmy is here to stay.
Luckily the admin really knows what he’s doing.
The admin was saying there is plenty of capacity and was encouraging more people to join recently. Hopefully that’s still the case.
I got a 502 error today and I blame u
😅
I have been using teddit and libreddit for quite some time. Way better than reddit’s trash website
