On this day in 1959, Congolese residents of Stanleyville rebelled against Belgian colonizers, demanding independence after a speech by Patrice Lumumba. Police suppressed the riot, killing ~70, imposing martial law, and arresting Lumumba.
The day prior, Lumumba called for a nationwide campaign of civil disobedience in a speech to the MNC congress, also ordering Congolese people to not collaborate with the Belgian colonial government and announcing that the party would not take part in the upcoming December elections.
The rebellion began on October 30th when the police arrived at the suburb of Mangoba to arrest Lumumba. The uprising was suppressed with military force, including two companies of infantry.
In total, approximately 70 people were killed in the fighting, and up to 200 were wounded. Lumumba himself was arrested by police as the government imposed martial law and banned gatherings of more than five people.
Congo would achieve independence from Belgium on June 30th, 1960, with Lumumba serving as its first Prime Minister. He was assassinated by Belgian forces and their collaborators on January 17th, 1961.

Guess what library’s? I’m creating the world’s first MEAT ONLY steak house. Does that trigger you?
Want some fries or mashed potatoes with your steak? Fuck you, shithead. Want some mushrooms sauted in rendered fat deglazed with red wine and shallots? I’ll fucking kill you with my sword once owned by Shinzo Abes father in front of a children’s hospital. Mushrooms are gay as fuck. Only removeds eat mushroom. Vegan wine is banned. We only source wine from vineyards that water their grapes with grease and aged in barrels made from wood of stolen caskets from mass Graves. Lemon with water? Try watered wrung from a towel used to clean the floor in slaughter houses into a glass made of hardened egg whites rimmed with beef lard. Deal with it you crying college liberals.
We only serve the steaks rare. It will be redder than my dad’s face when he caught me dressing in moms clothes when I was 6. No vegetables, no pronouns, no toilet paper, only meat. I’m Tucker Carlson signing off, wokesters
You should throw this in a spoiler and stick a cw on it.

Been trying for a good while to formulate my thoughts on the white murderers of KOTFM and every paragraph I type out about it I end up deleting because I feel like I trail off into nonsense.
Its just really striking how fucking unnecessary and un-exceptional the whole thing seems for these characters. The penniless freaks they hire to perform most of the murders dont actually make any particular money for it, they seem like they make just as much from any regular crime as from these murders, which is not enough to not live like a fucking dirty shithead.
And the men who actually marry the Osage to steal their land rights, like all the profit is basically made there it seems, they are given legal responsibility over their wives and their wealth, and thats just legal for them to do, all they have to do is be dishonest. And they dont particularly seem to be disgusted or uncomfortable with the arrangement. I guess what horrifies me most is just how much of a modern colonialist/imperialist mindset that Bill Hale and the rest of the ringleaders have in terms of like, the oil deserves to be in better more responsible hands, and even if they on some level apparently like and love the Osage(or are capable of pretending to for decades unbroken), they are still lesser humans in the eyes of the white men, a distraction or special period in their lives that will then be heartlessly discarded.
I feel like I simultaneously grasp the mindset that must be required for it all but also its just a big black miasma that I cant really see through. This evil casts a colossal shadow over the history of the 20th and 21st century, and over the global south.
Watched Killers of the Flower Moon and obviously theres just so much to take in, but two things that really struck me was firstly how the camera work for POV shots immediately signals a “predatory gaze” vs the “preys gaze” when it comes to white characters looking at the Osage, and vice versa. Some of that I already felt going on just from context but like as soon as Bill Hale is shown interacting with the Osage, I’m pretty sure he gets a POV shot with that predatory gaze in it.
And the second thing is just how tragic the decay of Mollie is, she’s really full of life and energy and charisma when we first meet her but all of that is taken away, and its not even slow like you might expect for such a long film, tragedy upon tragedy is inflicted on her and even in her moments of strength shes forced to be solemn and determined. And even if we’d got to see her life after the events of the film its not like she could have returned to how she was before.
Lily Gladstone better win a dozen awards.
Lily Gladstone better win a dozen awards.
Yes, she was amazing.
I left the theater feeling surrounded by some kind of Lovecraftian miasma of evil that infects everything in this country.
