I don’t know how the hell some of these peeps in the comments are somehow avoiding it, but I’ve had to block probably a dozen or more communities before I could just enjoy Lemmy normally.
Same, I ended up taking the recommendation of another user and making an account on sopuli.xyz because they’ve blocked lemmynsfw and some other porn instances. Best decision I’ve made regarding Lemmy thus far. I probably won’t be going back to my lemmy.world or beehaw accounts any time soon unless something happens to sopuli.

Anyway, real talk. If you’re seeing porn it’s probably because you’re looking for it / you subscribe to nsfw communities that post it. There’s no algorithm here in charge of what you see. You see stuff based on who you follow/what communities you subscribe to. (good! that’s the way social media honestly should be!)

I think that’s the most refreshing and underrated thing about Lemmy. I have seen that sometimes when I come back, I see repeat posts (which I have not read). I then close Lemmy, telling myself “I’ll just come back later I guess”.
Any other social media or Reddit front-page has gallons of content and “recommended communities/posts” which just keep your eyes glued to the screen for maximizing profits and degrading your mental health.
I hope this is promoted as a plus point whenever someone recommends Lemmy to others.

Can someone help me understand how Lemmy works?
When I click this link I can’t see very much content – presumably because I’m not logged in and NSFW content is hidden by default.
Is there a way to get a view of the “lemmynsfw Frontpage”, as my logged in lemmy.fmhy.ml identity? Specifically I want to see the lemmynsfw “local” view as if I was logged in there directly.
Bonus question; is there an easy way to do something like that on mobile, without fiddling with URLs?
You can’t see the front page from another instance, also because it’s not that useful. You can join communities from other instances and interact on posts.
I don’t know if there’s a better solution, but even on mastodon, you’ll have to piss yourself off by copying and pasting community and post urls.
Thanks for the answers. That’s a pretty big usability gap but I guess I have no idea what I’d do about it, so it makes sense.
Maybe just be able to see a list of another instance’s communities instances, in the context of my own instance, so I could browse and go directly to a community instead of having to swap between tabs and fiddle with URLs?

NSFW content is hidden by default, you need to view it with an account that allows NSFW content to see the porn. There is a lot, both in quantity and variety

Two things you can do:

You can change your account settings to filter out all NSFW content.

Alternatively, since NSFW can include more than just porn, you can block specific NSFW communities (most of which will probably come from lemmynsfw.com) as you encounter them. While logged in, if you encounter an NSFW community in your feed, just click on it to go to its main page (ex. [email protected], a community from my own blocklist), go to the sidebar, and click “Block Community”.

Pretty sure my instance also blocks porn. Can’t say I mind it, really, because I can just create an account on a porn instance.
Allows me to keep NSFW posts on, but not have to worry about pulling up a pic of a gaped ass in public. Plus if I was interested in following porn communities, I’d probably create a second account anyway. And then I wouldn’t even have to wade through all of the regular stuff, I could just sign up for a porn instance. Win-win.
The plausible deniability is nice. Many places can see what domain you go to, but that’s the only thing they can see.
I can’t say I mind it either way. I don’t mind that our instance blocks porn, but I’m glad there are some instances that don’t.
I dunno what instance you’re on, but I have allowed NSFW on lemmy.world and rarely have I seen porn. Thankfully a lot of it is over at lemmynsfw.com instead so I can see stuff labeled NSFW here without being flooded with porn. Unless .world defederated from lemmysnfw at some point. I haven’t paid attention to much meta news and who has defederated from who.

Seems to me that everyone with this opinion lives on Lemmy.world and peeps in other instances or on Kbin see something different, not sure why that happens
Reminds me of the old Reddit times when you had some random nudes here and there while browsing through the “all“ sub / timeline.
I don’t think that’s a problem and should not happen when you tailor your subscribed communities accordingly or choose to blur / filter NSFW.
I don’t see much porn, but my instance is currently so small that my subscription and all feeds aren’t really that different yet.
