woah woah woah…
I haven’t seen any porn since I joined lemmy. Where do I find this…porn?
It’s mostly on the instance lemmynsfw.com, but you should be able to see it when looking at All. Maybe the app you’re using has NSFW content blocked by default? Yeah there’s a ton of porn, but mostly just images or links to red gif
What subs are they subscribed to? I see none of those 2 on lemmy.ml (unless I would specifically search for it)
The reason why you aren’t seeing any porn on lemmy.ml is probably that it’s defederated from lemmynsfw where most of it is.
That you’re not seeing anything related to communism from a Marxist-Leninist instance is something of a puzzler, though 🤔
Wait… How am I missing out on all this NSFW content? I’m just seeing Linux and Star Trek memes, somebody help me find the titties!
I’m pretty sure most of it is on the lemmynsfw instance, which some instances have defederated with out of either prudishness or a ridiculous notion that all porn is inherently exploitative. Maybe you’re on one of those? 🤷
Accord to https://status.lemm.ee, lemm.ee is federated with lemmynsfw and I even personally sub to a couple lemmynsfw communities. I also have NSFW enabled and unblurred in settings, and still I never see porn unless I actively seek it out. I want surprise titties, goddamn it!
Damn, that sucks. Maybe if you use a lemmy client that lets you mark communities as favorites you’ll be more likely to have some thrown into your feed now and then?
I’m using Thunder, which has that. Can’t say for sure how effective it is yet, though, as I only found out the day before yesterday and haven’t done any measured testing…
Hey, I don’t love my client yet, so I’m down to check out Thunder. Thanks for the recommendation, whether it ends up not helping me find my sought-after surprise titties or not 👍
No problem 😁
What are they subscribing to? I’ve not seen anything like that, just old memes revived, beans, and some great content.
The only nsfw thing ive seen on lemmy was on lemmynsfw, afaik you can’t see nsfw without being a part of that instance. Not sure what people are complaining about
If you browse the all feed you can see nsfw posts as long as your instance is federated with the nsfw ones. That’s if you have nsfw enabled on your account though, which you can turn off.
I would assume sh.itjust.works isn’t with them then, because i literally have never once seen naything nsfw on c/all
It’s definitely there. Sorting by Hot a lemmynsfw post is the 12th or so post on All right now.
I sort by Top Day though and basically never run into NSFW posts in the wild.
I just checked and y’all only have 4 blocked instances and lemmynsfw isn’t one of them. You may just have NSFW turned off in your account settings.
There doesn’t appear to be much on lemmy.ml or lemmy.world (or at least it isn’t popular enough to show up in the Active, Hot, or Top feed), but if you select “All” instead of “Subscribed” or “Local,” stuff from instances like lemmynsfw.com etc. will start showing up.
Ah, my reddit rule of never selecting ALL is what saves me then.
Yeah, I tended to stay away on Reddit, too. I find myself selecting it often here, though, because there isn’t enough content yet for Local and Subscribed to show new posts often enough.
I usually hover between c/news and c/politics which has a lot of content. Once football season gets going I’ll be on c/nfl and c/cfb a lot too. The pet themed communities are also thriving so that is there too. What communities are lacking quality content? My RSS engine pulls in a few thousand items an hour, I might be able to contribute.
I’m subscribed to 50+ communities, so I won’t list them all here. A lot of my interests are relatively niche (stuff like Linux/FOSS, DIY, bicycling/urbanism, etc.) so it isn’t that surprising that some of the related communities seem to be averaging between a post a week and a post a day so far, since Lemmy as a whole isn’t all that big yet. (It could also be that I haven’t found the most popular community for a given topic yet, especially if it’s on a different Lemmy instance.)
My subscribed feed being overly dominated by c/politics, c/world and c/technology (the communities I’m subscribed to that do have lots of content) might be part of the problem too.
My RSS engine
You wouldn’t happen to have a Pastbin or Gist or something about it, would you? I’m curious about how to set up a similar thing for myself.
I use Feedly on my phone and NewsFlow on my desktop which I use to view reddit and lemmy.
I want more communism
huh i dont see any porn at all, im on lemmy.ml
Lemmy.ml defederated from lemmynsfw, where most of the porn is
ooo i see, thank you
No problem 🙂
where porn? Please enlighten me with links so I can personally check them all out and block them! Hate porn, hate pussy pic, hate communism, cheers
I would not say this is true as the main feed is seriously 90% memes, the rest is porn and some legit interesting posts.
Not saying that they’re necessarily right, just that the combination tickled my funnybone 😉
And communism.
I haven’t seen anything political or porn yet.
I think you might be looking at lemmygrad
Just a small minority of idiots whining about everything as usual
Wait what the fuck is that nsfw content in my feed? All I get is beans and poop… and I even have nsfw checked under my profile.
What instance are you using?
It looks like lemmy.ml is defederated from lemmynsfw which is where a large percent of the nsfw content comes from right now
Well that’s unfortunate
You could always use Lemmy.world, or you can make an account directly on Lemmy.nsfw. The Memmy app lets you switch between accounts like you could on Apollo
If you decide to switch instances you can check before you make a new account. If you scroll down to the bottom of that instances homepage you’ll see some options for modlog, instances, etc. Opening the instances one shows you all the instances they are federated with and then the ones they have blocked.
Lemm.ee is overloaded with it.
I guess they haven’t discovered the button to block communities?
My feed is quite nice after blocking the stuff that doesn’t appeal to me.
Thank you! I’ve just been browsing with NSFW turned off, but: A) I actually would rather turn on the blur function if there wasn’t literal porn throughout the “all” feed. B) A bunch of mild soft core stuff like “pretty women” and “celebs” gets through anyway.
Can’t believe it never occurred to me to use the block button to shape the all feed.
Same. Block is a key feature. That said, I’m actually fascinated at how many furry communities there are. You’d think blocking c/furry would take care of 90% of the problem, but who knew c/MidCenturyYiffsOnAnEamesChair had such a dedicated following.
The inside of those fursuits must smell awful.
c/MidCenturyYiffsOnAnEamesChair
(It isn’t really, but I do like those Eames chairs…)
I haven’t seen this one in years.
It’s funny how when there’s no algorithm to dictate what you see, it’s furries and gay porn (for mastodon) that show up.
Lmao that’s a comically specific /c/
I don’t think it’s a bad thing that people complain about problematic viewpoints, even if they can block them.
Being a furry is a problematic viewpoint?
Some people might actually think that and I find that hilarious

Eh, I understand that. Theres a whitelist approach and there’s a blacklist approach. Should you browse !all while cherrypicking blocks or should you manage your experience with subscriptions.
Some phone apps do not support that feature. Couldn’t find it in Memmy for Lemmy for example, so I bounced.
You can of course always do it through the web interface.
Memmy has it. Tap the community name and then the three dots in the top right. “Block community” will pop up as an option.
I’ve been using it to block Anime/Manga/Hentai communities as fast as they make ‘em. It’s never-ending with that stuff.
Good to know, must have missed that. Memmy felt a bit glitchy on my device, so I’m trying out Liftoff! now.
I’m expecting there will be a bit of a development boom with the increased interest, so it’s always good to keep tabs on what the other apps have to offer.
You can also hide the NSFW content entirely, but some people are never happy.
I’d like to block entire servers myself. But I can’t find a way to block the whole nsfw one. Individual communities yes, but I’d like to not see the whole server.
Just move to an instance that has defederated from major nsfw instances.
It would be nice if there was a directory that made it clear what server has defederated what.
Fragmentation and the lack of continuity and good navigation is seriously going to be what kills any chance a federated Reddit alternative has at becoming even 25% as large as Reddit was.
You can see what an instance has defederated by adding /instances to the URL of the instance. There’s no way to see it for more than one instance (at a time) as far as I know, so yeah, have to agree with you.
Yeah, the only way defederation is a feature is if there’s a way (even if it’s standardized at the client-side) to merge that defederation for those who want a cohesive experience.
It’d almost be better if every user could pick their own “federations” instead of it being at the server level. Obviously the servers need to have that control and my hypothetical might not be in throwing range of what lemmy can/should do.
Use a different instance, some block it
I read earlier today that at least one instance is defederated from lemmynsfw so you can try making an account on that/one of those…
One of the nice things you can do on kbin, but I don’t think you can on Lemmy yet
Find the hosts file on your machine. Add a line for the domain you want to block, like so:
lemmy.annoyingassholes.com 0.0.0.0
If that didn’t make sense, google the terms I used and you’ll find tons of tutorials.
Your suggestion is entirely missing the point. In this context, “blocking” means stopping anything from that instance from showing up in the feed when you view “All” from your home instance, not stopping yourself from navigating your web browser to that other instance.
The problem is that there are so many porn communities that I have to block one every time I open Lemmy.
I’m so confused by posts like this. I see very little porn stuff on /all/. How are so many others seeing it everywhere?
Some instances block it
Is that too difficult?
You could just browse your subscribed communities instead of All.
hard to find new communities without using All
Problem is that the website and clients never remember that I want Subscribed to be the default.
You can change that in your profile settings, and I’d imagine most apps as well.
I know, problem is that this is never remembered and is reset back to All every time.
Do you delete/prevent cookies? If not then idk,
works on my machine
That’s lemmy.world for you lol
hard to find new communities without using All
That’s why I’m subscribed to [email protected]
Yeah I agree, I mean I still mainly browse All. However that’s always going to be the price you pay. You want everything, you get everything.
hard to find new communities without using All
Am I the only one who, like…never sees any porn in their feeds?
Create two accounts, one with NSFW content turned off, and one with it on.
That sucks just as much lol
That’s why we need some 3rd party apps to make swapping amounts seamless.
Memmy
It’s pretty seamless on Jerboa. I’ve got this account on lemmy.one and a different account on lemmynsfw. Works great.
Jerboa is really good, I’m very hopeful about it.
Voyager does this pretty well.
Both thunder and liftoff do that well
I’d like it if an app could be configured to automatically use specific accounts for specific communities, or automatically use an account from the same instance when posting to communities on that instance.
Or just make a NSFW-less account on one instance and a NSFW-ful account on a different instance. You don’t even need to log out of one to switch to the other. Just change the URL slightly.
Why’s that? I’ve been using a separate account for porn on reddit for over a decade. It’s the only way to go imo
Imagine suggesting this thinking the average user wants to manage this bullshit.
Pro tip: make accounts on different instances, so you don’t need to log in and out but just type in a different url
🤦♂️ you people really really don’t get it do you 🤣
I have seen virtually no porn here on kbin. What am I doing wrong?
Same. Had to make a few horny accounts to compensate.
Is kbin not federated with lemmynsfw? That’s where most of the porn posts I see come from.
We most definitely are, because it was the first thing I ever personally blocked. So that’s…odd. I’m not aware that kbin currently defederates anyone
Pepperidge farm remembers when reddit had porn on the all page.
Wound up creating a Lemmy account as well as this one. Still getting accustomed to it but it appears that, instead of relying solely on the mods to manage content, more control is given to the end user. As long as I can easily block trolls and other content I don’t care for, I’m good.
.
On the other hand, where FB is concerned, you just can’t make it go away. I’m stuck with that account because of events and messages but looking for work-arounds for both.10 years without, I agree
They’ve made it near impossible to live without
A lot of us are FOSS fans, what do you expect? ;)
Yeah, wife wasn’t happy when I was checking those boobs by accident.
A frightful calamity, for sure
