I remember one time discussing the lyrics of this song with my mom. We both realized we didn’t know any of the words except for the 99 luftballoons bit, looked it up, then finally realized most of the song is in German.
This is why I usually go for 99 Red Balloons by Goldfinger.
The original artist (Nena) also has an English version, titled 99 Red Balloons. Though I do like the Goldfinger cover as well.
