CW: Transphobia, ableism, misgendering

I’ve posted a video from Nicco Loves Linux covering the whole situation to the libre community here for context.

TL;DR: Vaxry, the lead developer of the popular Hyprland wayland compositor and tiling window manager has been banned from ever contributing a patch to freedesktop, a highly influential software group that is responsible for the modern Linux Desktop. This was due to him violating freedesktop’s code of conduct because of his toxic discord community and crypto-fash blog. Vaxry then writes two screeds and throws a public temper tantrum, leading to inevitable clash when his nazi friends harass the freedesktop people.

(EDIT: Removed direct links to blog, the entire blog is pretty reactionary outside of the purely software related posts) The blog posts that got them banned:

r/linux has been suspect for a long time.

Years ago I noticed they had the sub set to auto remove posts on as low as a couple of user reports. I don’t know if it’s still that set up that way. I bailed on that place a long time ago.

People seemed to be intentionally abusing that to shadow moderate the subreddit. They seemed to be primarily targeting posts and comments with anything related to China or Chinese origin authors/topics. Maybe even any topics or authors of east Asia all together? I never pieced together a clearer picture.

It was obvious there was unusual behavior going on with certain types of posts getting [removed]. The one topic they didn’t touch was when the Asian American college student was doing a research study about submitting patches to the Linux kernel. The whole sub was having a meltdown over it even though what they did was superfluous changes and they had done so under the approval of the university.

I tried myself to fuck with it a bit getting some posts removed by reporting from a couple of accounts. The mods almost immediately reinstated the posts.

All the cool trans people are in wayland, it’s just the one crypto-fash chud who wants to make this space unsafe. Compositors are implementations of wayland protocols and this chud got banned from ever contributing to wayland and the linux desktop outside of his compositor.

Wayland vs. X11 is linux debatebro nonsense.

By the way I’m infinitely grateful for hexbear being such a great site to be trans in. Every single other thread about this topic has some chud whining about muh free speech and making up conspiracies.

As a cis man, I’ve found hexbear to be an incredible resource on how to be a better ally to a close relative who is trans.

As someone who’s been exclusively Linux-at-home for about a quarter-century, I am constantly disappointed in the chuds who infest the various subcultures in the broader Linux community. Trying to explain basic fucking empathy to these people is an uphill battle. Honestly it’s made me leery of contributing code to established projects. Instead I just do small from-scratch projects for myself. At least then I know the project founder isn’t a bigot.
