I have never used stock Xiaomi software for more than the time it took to unlock the bootloader. The custom ROMs for my devices were jank as fuck too. I will never buy from Xiaomi again. Only Pixel and GrapheneOS from now on.

i went for a Nothing Phone (1) cause i got tired of bloatware. It’s nice that when you want to do something on your phone it just does it, without shoving an ad down your throat.

Samsung shows ads on the phone’s lock screen…it’s that intrusive. Only people maybe spared are those with 1K+ Galaxy Phones. By this point, might as well buy an iPhone.

I’ve been buying the galaxy line of phones for a while now, currently have an S21U. I’ve never seen ads on the lock screen before. It doesn’t completely surprise me though, my Samsung TV does have some movie and TV ads on the home screen, just like my Roku and most streaming apps now.

no, it doesn’t (I’ve never seen ads on all price ranges, M12, A52s and S21FE)

maybe you accidentally activated Samsung’s “help poor people” app (forgot it’s name). It shows ads on the lockscreen and donates most of the ad revenue to charities (Samsung takes a cut tho which is a bit scummy). You can just uninstall it, like any other app.

Also, low-end Samsung phones (like M1* and A1* series) come with a hidden app called AppCloud (it regularly sends you notifications, usually after installing updates, asking you to finish setting up your phone by installing some bloatware like TikTok and stuff), make sure to disable it from the Settings.

I looked into my options really carefully when choosing my phone last year. Few things to note, when looking for an Android phone:

      • Make sure it’s either a pixel or a Snapdragon powered phone. This just means that if the manufacturer does some stupid stuff, there is a higher probability of your phone having a custom rom.
      • Stay away from Samsung if you want to install custom roms, they are really against it.
      • Pick a manufacturer of good build quality and software updates being stable, some manufacturers just half as them and brick the phone/ damage display/motherboard because they pushed update with wrong voltage.
      • if you want a basic phone and don’t really care about the most beautiful photos or do heavy mobile gaming, just pick a cheap phone, it will be more than enough.

The phone I picked was Moto G52, it cost me ~150USD and it is one of the best phone experiences I’ve had. It lasts me 2-3 days on a charge, mostly because I do close to nothing on it just answering calling/messages and some basic internet surfing. For my purpose, it is better than a top end iPhone/Android phone.

Motorola is quite slow with updates, but the community is great and created and are now maintaing custom roms, which means I get the latest software updates quite regularly. The camera is passable, but the speakers they are loud like really really loud, louder almost all smartphone.

Bonus points: it has a headphone jack.

I used to think Xiaomi phones were great, because they were the only ones I’d ever had. But then I tried out Samsung, Motorola, Vivo, and many others, and just got blown away each time I remembered I used to enjoy MIUI

If you are going to use a xiaomi phone you have to at least put a custom ROM on it.

You can use MIUI by Xiaomi.eu. It’s a custom rom based on Chinese MIUI.

Chinese MIUI has more features than the other regional roms. Everytime they showcase a new MIUI version most of the features only arrive to the Chinese rom, all other regions get just basic stuff.

Whether you like it or not is not the issue.

The issue is, as with most modern OSs, that the OS itself is chock full of spyware.

I’m done with Xiaomi. Good hardware but very intrusive software. Just to change the ringtone or the notification sound I have to accept being spied by them. Had to use a 3rd party software to change these. Wallpapers? Nah, accept the terms to be spied on as you use our theme software. I’m done, writing this on a Redmi Note 11 but already ordered a Moto G23 to replace it. Love the screen of the Note 11 but tired of the bullshit push to relinquish control of the device.

Will try the Pixel Experience ROM after I transfer everything to the new phone but I need banking apps working, not much hopeful.

Whem the Fairphone 5 comes out I will buy one. Decided it is time to invest on fair devices.

I had experienced that on a Vivo phone. The worst device i’ve ever got it. The only advantage is a Snapdragon as a CPU.

LineageOS solved this issue for me.

It’s a little outdated model, but on late 2022 I got a brand new Redmi Note 9 Pro (2020) just so I could have a Xiaomi without MIUI cancer. I’m using it right now.

The problem is finding an offically supported model, otherwise you rely on people who post their custom LineageOS roms on forums.

      It’s not even good hardware.

I’ve got a Mi 10t Lite, and the camera is useless. It randomly blurs patches of photos when it takes them, especially if you dare to use the zoom

Same. On X3 Pro running CrDroid. The lroblem I face is that battery backup is not that good, the launcher’s recent menu is buggy sometimes, and gestures are not great as MIUi. (Like can’t swipe back on Gbaord to close it.)

Otherwise a lot better in every aspect than MIUi. No junk of apps and lot better privacy.

I haven’t encountered an app that doesn’t work after using magisk to hide root acces.

Btw xiaomi.eu ROMs are also a good option next to lineageOS.

I’m typing this from an unrooted xiaomi phone with lineage for microg where I can use banking apps. The only downside is having to connect to a computer every time I install an update.

Only Xiaomi does this, even other Chinese phones are not doing this. It sucks though because I want to use a simple and minimal launcher with gestures

yeah but gestures were extremely broken and sucked on all android phones I’ve ever used (EXCEPT custom ROMs and Pixels) if used with a 3p launcher. actually just stick to a 3 button navbar.

In stark contrast to the other comment, I’ve hated gestures, and have actively switched every modern android I’ve gotten back to 3 buttons. And yeah, Nova Launcher till I die.

This isn’t the default for others. In OneUI, for example, you can use a combination of both, even with 3rd party launchers. One-handed mode+, for example, is awesome for gestures.

ROM doesn’t allow gestures with 3rd party launchers — real shit
