The Nakba, commemorated annually on this day as “Nakba Day”, was the destruction of Palestinian society and homeland in 1948 following Israel’s creation. Nakba Day protests take place around the world and have been attacked by Israel.

The foundational events of the Nakba took place during and shortly after the 1947-1949 Palestine war, including 78% of Mandatory Palestine being declared as Israel, the exodus of 700,000 Palestinians, the depopulation and destruction of over 500 Palestinian villages and subsequent geographical erasure, the denial of the Palestinian right of return, and the creation of permanent, stateless Palestinian refugees.

Although May 15th had been used as an unofficial commemoration of the Nakba since 1949, Nakba Day was formalized in 1998 after Yasser Arafat proposed that Palestinians should mark the 50th anniversary of the Nakba during the First Intifada.

The Nakba was a key event in the development of Palestinian culture and is a foundational symbol of Palestinian identity, along with “Handala”, a ten-year old cartoon character developed by Naji al-Ali; the keffiyeh, a checkered black and white scarf worn around the head; and the “symbolic key” (many Palestinian refugees have kept the keys to the homes they were forced to flee).

On Nakba Day 2011, Palestinians and other Arabs from the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, and Syria marched towards their respective borders, or ceasefire lines and checkpoints in Israeli-occupied territories, to mark the event. At least twelve Palestinians and supporters were killed and hundreds wounded as a result of shootings by the Israeli Army.

    CW: Liberals talking about assisted suicide

    I wasn’t sure I fully agreed with Hexbear’s stance on assisted suicide until I saw a thread about a 29 year old killing herself because of mental illness, filled with upvoted comments like “This. Is. Awesome.” or “I hope assisted suicide becomes more common. For everyone.” or “This is also a whole lot less traumatic than people committing suicide. Nobody wants the last memory of their loved ones to be the scene of their (potentially messy) suicide.” while at the same time, someone got banned for posting, “I’m going to stop a young person from killing themselves just to watch you cry.”

    A policy that can get rid of pesky malcontents and disabled people, which is possible to be framed to/by libs as “clean” and “humane” should set off every warning bell there is.

    Update: Caring about human life is apparently “the same vibes” as being anti-abortion.

    Reddit personified, CGP Grey, once made a video arguing that an ideal work week would make Wednesday a standard day off in place of Saturday. So you would work two days, have one day off, work three days, have Sunday off, etc.

    As someone who has been working this type of schedule for a few months I can confirm this is absolute shit.

    I remember once watching a 9/11 memorial video that used footage of Sailor Moon 1990’s Anime. I couldn’t stop laughing at fucking Luna watching the twin towers getting blown. And I think this was like a serious attempt at a 9/11 memorial video like those DBZ 9/11 videos.

    I wish I had a better memory for politics stuff. I encapsulate things so for instance I have extremely concrete opinions about jordan-eboy-peterson but if I were confronted by my roommate recommending him to me, I would have to just kinda act dumb and demure because I wouldn’t be able to start to explain why he sucks. Like I don’t remember why he got his credentials as a psychologist revoked. Multiply this over every other kubrick-stare crowder-nightmare. Like I can just say “Shapiro is actually a dumbass he just talks fast and with confidence” but then I’d be out on a limb and out of things to say about him.

    This is why I keep my power level hidden, honestly.

    Family history stuff is really cool if you can go back pretty far. Looking at the dates and country of origin, it’s almost certain that my great great whoever had to cross the ocean because landlords at the time had raised rent so high that it caused a wave of emigration.
