Answering honestly: so that shitty people can like shitty things without the consequences. They can broadcast their views without having to answer for them, and down the line it’s easier to manipulate likes so Elon can sell likes or remove likes from anything he pleases, which allows twitter to create “public opinion” that won’t be in line with actual public opinion.

Xwitter has become a master class in autocracy, how one guy with power and a fragile ego can bring an entire empire to ruin.

Here in the states with Project 2025 burning bright in the future promised by the Republican Party, we should be watching this closely.

Ruin, yet sooooooo many people are still using it.

Seems to be working out for him. He’s able to control what people are allowed to see and say, which is the main thing he wanted.

Dude is also about to get $56B richer, there is no chance of it failing financially at this point as long as he’s still able to have this much influence with it.

Hey Elon, wouldn’t it be better for us all to not only show the likes but show the dislikes too? Even on your account.

He has a point though. Just think of Reddit and Lemmy where people mindlessly hive-mind vote some posts. When you see something massively upvoted, you tend to upvote (immediately). Same goes for downvotes. In contrary, if the votes do no show, you only vote when you actually mean it.

His reasoning for wanting to do this is so bad and clearly a racist dog whistle; everyone should be able to like things that they would be ashamed to like publicly with their name attached!

“But muh family and fwiends use it!” or “I have an autistic cousin twice removed so I can’t stop because it’s the only thing he’ll use!”

Any excuse to keep huffing that copium.

This is literally what these walled gardens depend on. Why are mocking people for it?

Just change cities, “but my friends live here.”

Just leave the cult, “but the cult separated me from all my other friends.”

Like, yeah. Cult’s do this on purpose to keep people locked in.

I’m not on social media except Lemmy but… I thought Facebook was the “my relatives” one and Twitter was more keeping up with politicians, celebrities, and other public figures?

Following the publication of this story, X owner Elon Musk reshared a screenshot of it, saying it’s “important to allow people to like posts without getting attacked for doing so!”

“We’ve listened to our users who’ve voice concerns about being labeled ‘racist piece of shit’ merely for supporting tweets that suggest that other races are less human than white people. Today we’re doubling down on our own brand of ‘freedom of speech’ to mean ‘freedom from consequences’. From today forward, twitter users will be safe and comfortable voicing their (anonymous) support for the most disgusting racist, homophobic, or misogynistic tweets imaginable.” -Twitter PR probably

No no no. It’s not like that! Twitter doesn’t have a PR team. They were fired 2 years ago. Along with tech support. Plus twitter doesn’t exist. Only X which continues to bring the worst ideas forward to make the world full of shit.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

That means what users like on the platform will be hidden by default, which is already an option for X’s Premium subscribers.

Following the publication of this story, X owner Elon Musk reshared a screenshot of it, saying it’s “important to allow people to like posts without getting attacked for doing so!”

A few weeks ago, X’s director of engineering, Haofei Wang, said the upcoming change is meant to protect users’ public image — because “many people feel discouraged” to like “edgy” content.

Late last year, Musk told the platform’s engineers that he wanted to get rid of the tweet action buttons altogether and instead place a stronger emphasis on post views (also called “impressions”).

“Social media in general is shifting away from like counts, so this makes sense,” the source said.

Update, June 11th: Added Elon Musk’s confirmation of The Verge’s reporting.

The original article contains 271 words, the summary contains 140 words. Saved 48%. I’m a bot and I’m open source!

Elon Musk trying to be “edgy” and just coming off like the most divorced man on Earth is pretty funny. I’m still not using Vichy Twitter but it is funny watching a grown ass, 52 year-old man try to be an edgelord.

You can still see who liked your post.

So someone just needs to make an account that says edgy things, then screen shot the list.

How about “X is about to start sending everyone to Mastodon”.
