Following changes to its API access, users are forced to log in on the official Reddit app if they want to view NSFW content on mobile.
And you just use desktop mode
Not just nsfw content, it’s bullshit when any site tries to force you to use an app because of a bit of text in your browser profile
Facebook did it for years and any site that does it I avoid
How’s the porn on lemmy/lemmy.world?
Fediverse is strangely prudish. Not much porn, and when it shows up, instances defederate from it.
One of the larger instances is lemmynsfw.com, there’s a fair amount of porn there.
Not quite the levels there are on Reddit, though. And very little OC from what I’ve seen.
https://pornlemmy.com/ seems to have better content
Lmao at the styling
Lol, you weren’t kidding. I had to do a double take to make sure I was on the right site.
Ooh, thanks! That does look nice
The admin is a pedo (check the loli comment).
Is lemmy.world entirely sfw?
No, it has NSFW communities and also federates with other NSFW instances like lemmynsfw.com and pornlemmy.com
Yeah it kind of just…not very good at the moment. Kinda like early 2000’s internet porn. Still images of celebrities and such.
Well it was very different a couple days ago. Things got shook up apparently, I don’t know the full story but a bunch of communities got wiped for some reason.
Even the mightiest of rivers begins with but a trickle.
Nowhere near to the same level of niche.
You still can if you’re a subreddit mod, so I just did this:
- Create your own private sub
- You become a mod! Yay!
- NSFW now works on 3rd party app
You are the real mvp
Also be sure to put a bunch of stupid shit in your sub to make the site more lame. Post about how it’s lame and people should use Lemmy or Kbin instead.

Ah so this is why my apps sorta kinda work but are buggy as shit.
Which app are you using? On boost it tries to load (even non NSFW) but it does not load the posts.
Edit: NVM, Took a while but SFW and NSFW posts indeed are still loading on boost, for various accounts of mine.
The way the block works is that NSFW content works as it used to, but subs tagged by admins as porn will not.
PSA: Hardened browsers (desktop or mobile) are still an option. I know it isn’t <YourFavoriteAppHere> but it would be difficult to convince me that the official app is better than even that.
TLDR: Hhhhhe he said “hardended.” uh heh heh…
Modding a NSFW subreddit also unblocks all of it. Anyone can just make a private sub and mark it 18+ and still have all their porn, tested it on Relay and it worked fine. For science, of course.
It doesn’t even have to be NSFW. Modding any subreddit work.
Edit: Welp, nevermind. It seems Boost is down now.
not true, still works on non-patched Boost
Which is kind of funny because one of the reasons Reddit got so big was because of the pornography
Why would you look for porn on Reddit of all places? There’s lots of porn and the internet is a big place. Reddit is a sorry place to post and view it in the first place.
For the hyperspecific curation. There are subreddits that specialize in any type of content you could want.
Oh my naive friend, porn is like 1/3 of all of reddit.
What was the saying…“there’s a subreddit for everything.”
Clearly you haven’t been looking enough. There’s a bazillion porn sites of every imaginable type including a truly horrifying amount of incomprehensibly weird shit. Reddit is amateur hour.
Bullshit. Reddit is one of the easiest places to find porn for whatever kink/fetish you have. Combine that with the abundance of people that post their nudes there (even before the rise of OF), and you have one of the biggest databases of porn with easy save options, all tied to your anonymous account. If anything, porn is about the only reason I miss Reddit.
https://old.reddit.com/ still seems to work, and that one doesn’t force you to use the app or login.
The grim reaper is coming for old.reddit.com any day now.
It’s already been leaked they’re killing off everything outside of the official app in phases. Only a matter of time.
Leaked or rumored? The only thing I’ve seen officially is them saying old.reddit isn’t going anywhere.
Source?
Is this just speculation or is there evidence for it?
In January Reddit told third party app developers that there wouldn’t be any API changes this year. Maybe in the future, but they definitely wouldn’t charge for it this year.
Similarly, Spez said that old Reddit isn’t going away.
To me, that’s enough to consider it a realistic possibility.
There was a Reddit post a while back where they confirmed the OP was part of an A/B test to disable logging in to old.reddit.com on mobile. Not a great sign.
https://www.reddit.com/r/help/comments/135tly1/helpdid_reddit_just_destroy_mobile_browser_access/
That makes sense though considering that they wanted to kill the 3rd party apps too. I’d imagine that for desktop users it shouldn’t matter much wether you’re using the redesign or old.reddit - they’ll be able to collect the same data and show the same ads.
Speculation, but it’s an inevitability. It costs money to support old.reddit, which means Reddit will certainly kill it on the day that they’ll think the backlash will be small enough.
My imagination is that old.reddit.com was cheaper to serve than whatever it is they are doing now. Maybe they make less ad revenue?
To keep old reddit alive they need to also spend developer time supporting some new features and not breaking legacy code. It’s more than just server costs.
A few weeks ago when I still used Reddit via old.Reddit I was constantly getting switched to the new Reddit. It was infuriating.
Yeah that’s likely
Wait you can even view reddit on a 3rd party app at all? Which app playoffs the $10m to still work with reddit?
Yeah, theres a few that are gonna switch to a subscription model to pay off the ridiculous price reddit is asking. Fucking shills, man.
I wouldn’t necessarily say shills. I can’t say I know the ins and outs of app development but I’m sure it could come about that a particular dev doesn’t have the know how or capital to start a new project.
What I do know is that I’ve worked for companies who’s morals I don’t approve of to make ends meet.
I can’t hate. Those devs had a livelihood and real world bills to pay. I can’t blame them for trying to make a bad thing work.
I will hate on the people who pay it though, since paying to use reddit after how Spez conducted himself and the disdain shown towards the user base seems absolutely ridiculous. That’s some next level addiction of being mad enough to not use the official reddit app, but too addicted to not stop contributing content to the site.
It is still based on usage so you don’t need to cough up 10 mil for starters. You ONLY need something like 10$ a month per user. Can’t recall the exact numbers anymore but the point remains.
Yeah thanks for the accurate number. It wasn’t as ridiculous as I recalled. Should’ve checked it first.
Still unreasonably high (checked the Apollo post, he calculated it would be multiple times more than what average reddit user currently brings to table).
The purpose of my comment was to point out that the mentioned 10 million dollars would mean 4 million active users if it’s monthly fee.
Theoretically anyone could make their own app with the api and pay the api cost directly.
The Apollo dev said $2.50 a month per user. Not that bad really if reddit had given developers enough time to change their apps and the sign-up process. He got screwed by already having an existing Premium that people had pre-paid too.
It’s $2-3/month, but that’s assuming all your existing users convert to paid subscriptions.
The issue devs had was that it was going to mostly be the heaviest users who would be willing to pay for a subscription. The people who spend many hours per day using the app and rack up $20/month in API charges.
Yeah, they would have to include some limits so a user wasn’t costing the app developer money. Not all existing users would have to sign up, though - people would just have to be required to sign up and pay to use the app in the future. It’s certainly quite a disadvantage for 3rd party app users have to pay while the official app is free.
Boost was still working till now on Android. They seem to have finally killed it.
Red Reader will continue to function.
You can use them if you aren’t logged into your account. I still try BaconReader every once in awhile, just to see my old friend. Even the NSFW links worked just now.
NSFW stopped working on RiF
This is the true final blow to third party apps.
I noticed they did something similar to the mobile website. Even with appropriate content blockers there’s absolutely no way you can see sexually explicit content on mobile without their app.
I logged onto Apollo using side loading. NSFW still works??
They even do the same thing with SFW posts, they just say it’s “unreviewed content” or whatever.
Request the desktop site. Just tried it in Firefox on Android and it no longer says to open in app.
Or use old.reddit.com too.
I’d recommend setting one’s own browser to automatically redirect to old.reddit.com for the occasion they might need to find that rare technical solution/see sum tiddies.
I use this plugin to fetch the last known stored version of a given page in the Wayback Machine: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/reddit-to-wayback-machine/
Really handy to get a read-only version of useful threads that have been since removed in protest or put in a private subreddit. Plus it doesn’t give them any traffic, as it uses an external proxy.
That’s a false dichotomy. Tiddies ARE a technical solution for feeding babies and attracting mates.
…or so I hear?
Reddit doesn’t respect that on iPhones through any browser.
So anti consumer it hurts.
Last I heard, iThings weren’t allowed to have other browsers, everything just had to be a different UI on top of Safari.
Yes that’s true. That’s why I can confidently say any browser because they are all the same.
Desktop Browser seems to be able to bypass some forced restrictions Safari has. Doesn’t seem to work for Reddit, though.
Wow that’s awful. I didn’t think I could hate apple anymore than I have been for the last 17 years (I still remember the time my friend tried copying my music collection to is ipod and itunes deleted the entire folder)
Or use old.reddit.com too.
Interesting calculus here. Before the r/pocalyspe I’d have said old-reddit was on a 3 month clock to being summarily retired
They also likely lost way more users than they anticipated through the blackouts, and might just let old-reddit be to protect their numbers until the IPO. As long as its not on default Main page, I doubt the advertisers will care. They’ll kill it when they can do so quickly and quietly
Or don’t use it.
I just did a quick test with the DuckDuckGo browser. Didn’t seem to have any issues loading a bunch of NSFW posts. You have to be signed in though, but I think it’s been like that for quite a while now.
old-reddit can still do it while logged out. It’s only new-reddit that requires logging in.
Not just porn! Since reddit only has one such tag you can apply to posts, many subreddits were using the NSFW tag for a wider variety of reasons such as spoilers, content which may contain unsettling material (aka “triggers”), and more!
To be fair, there’s been a site wide spoiler tag for a few years now, but yeah before it was introduced people used NSFW for that if a community didn’t allow actual NSFW stuff or whatever
It’s not all NSFW. The Synology community I followed went full NSFW in protest and I can still view their subreddit. I cannot view subreddits such as watchitfortheplot. So somehow Reddit is differentiating.
Well I know they forced some subreddits go back to SFW if it was obvious the NSFW was just to protest. Maybe that’s the case for the subreddit you’re looking at?
NSFW means no ads as well.
I also remember the announcement was sexually explicit content won’t be served through the api, so they must have a way to differentiate then.
The stoners on Reddit got screwed - many of the weed subs got the banhammer, and the rest got NSFW’d because spez wants Reddit as G-rated as Disney for the IPO.
wait really? which weed subs got banned?
Trees is still around, so idk lol.

How does reddit tell the difference? Is it just nsfw communities not in the api or all nsfw posts? There is no discrepancy at least in the UI between NSFW gore and NSFW tits.
They don’t, it’s any post or community marked with the NSFW tag
Also between the two I’d say porn is decidedly more advertiser friendly
users are forced to log in on the official Reddit app if they want to view NSFW content on mobile.
the OP literally said it’s for all NSFW contents.
Porn works on Stealth available on f-droid if you switch the source to web scrapping. Not that I advocate using Reddit
right nowever again.People should start mirroring Reddit porn to the appropriate fedi hubs. Porn is how tech grows; hate it or love it.
Already happening
May I present you PornLemmy?
Ok can I add this server to my profile some how? Or do I need a new account? The fediverse confuses me
Just be aware that in the fediverse everyone sees what you up and down vote.
You can simply open an incognito browser and go to pornlemmy.com
As long as you have nsfw content enabled and your instance is federated with it (you’ll have to check since some instances do not federate with porn lemmys due to legal concerns). The list of federated and blocked instances for your instance is listed in the “Instances” link in the footer of your instance.
If you find that you are indeed federated with it, you can subscribe to its comms simply by finding them in the search feature on your own instance. They will then be visible on your homepage when you sort by “subscribed”.
At last! Um…said this guy I know
There goes my Reddit addiction
You can’t look at Reddit at all on third party apps now. Or did I miss a change to their API change?
