80% of AI projects so far…
Pareto principal for psyops, by a think tank organization too. Why is this nonsense tractable here?
Because AI reversed the ratio.
So less diversity in founders? What’s the perfect type that The Power should allow to do what they want?
The interviews revealed that data scientists sometimes get distracted by the latest developments in AI and implement them in their projects without looking at the value that it will deliver.
At least part of this is due to resume-oriented development.
I read bits of a programming book once, can’t remember which one.
Halfway through it was revealed that all the code snippets they had were from a project that was abandoned before it was finished, once the people paying for it realised they no longer wanted it and stopped funding them.
I wasn’t sure what message to take from the book after that. Like, sure, my code is a load of shit, hodge-podged together at the request of people who don’t really know what they want, but at least I’ve got people out there using it…
Sounds like I need to train an AI model to predict this and charge people for it.
The circle of AI
Wasting?
A bunch of rich guy’s money going to other people, enriching some of the recipients, in hopes of making the rich guy even richer? And the point of AI is to eliminate jobs that cost rich people money?
I’m all for more foolish AI failed investments.
It’s a circle jerk, don’t get fooled into thinking this is some new version of trickle down economics
It’s not trickle down at all. Definitely not what I was trying to say. Just rich people trading money among themselves in hopes of getting richer.
Imo it’s wasted in the sense that the money could have gone towards much better uses.
Which is not unique to AI, it’s just about the level of money involved.
What’s better than paying someone’s salary?
New renewable energy installations.
Research into vaccines.
Malaria distribution.
Higher education endowments.
Heck, just paying the salaries of people working in those fields. Sure, spending money stimulates the economy so I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s totally wasted, it’s definitely being put to a much better use than just sitting in someone’s bank account. But it could be put to a lot better uses. The software engineers could be developing a new program for balancing energy loads, or managing the maintenance of wind turbine fields. The hardware engineers could be optimizing a better autoclave or building a machine that automatically dispenses medicine when fed a script. The PMs could be managing a team distributing aid in Ukraine or designing a new blood drive initiative. Jobs that have positive societal impact, instead of - at best - neutral societal impact.
It makes rich guys even richer. At the expense of other rich guys and just fools attracted.
I think the whole system of venture capital might be garbage. We have bros spending millions of dollars like gif sharing while the oceans boil, our schools rot, and our infrastructure rusts or is sold off. Or, I guess I’m just indicting capitalism more generally. But having a few bros decide what to fund based on gutfeel and powerpoints seems like a particularly malignant form.
The world is burning and the rich know this so they are desperate to multiply their money and secure their luxury survival bunkers, which is why they are gambling harder.
Oh yeah I think I read about Zucker building a bunker in hawaii. Hopefully he dies before he can enjoy it.
It’s not just fuckerberg, EVERY billionaire is doing it and desperately pumping their billionaire friends for tips and suggestions on things like ‘keeping guards loyal for multiple generations’, and ‘what commodities to hoard for trading after the collapse’.
One of the sites I used to support was a high-end automation service, normally for factory equipment and biotech but pivoted to luxury home automation (no IoT devices, all site hosted with aerospace grade equipment), and they have been running at 100% for the last seven years deploying to ultra wealthy residential estates where the location is not disclosed.
The wealthy are expecting us to rise up within the next decade and a half, and I think they’re probably right.
I remember seeing memes about this. I think it was the “boss throws guy out the window” template.
- “How can we keep our guards loyal? Drug them? Bomb collars?”
- “Maybe you could pay them and treat them with dignity and respect”
Personally I think we should start a campaign of jury nullification and “if you’re an EMT, and they’re a billionaire, let them die”, but I’m just one guy.
The current ferment in the billionaire community is that ‘starting a religion based on the family and offering marriage partners from within the family as a promise of social mobility’ is the safest method of guaranteeing loyalty, so really they’re just making micromonarchies.
Treating them ‘with dignity and respect’ isn’t going to last very long as eventually the family guards will have members that covet the family’s wealth, resources, members, and well since they are guards they have access to all the weapons. Also: almost zero billionaires have respect for anyone who is not also a billionaire.
I agree with your campaign, though I would take it a step further and suggest we should just drag them all into the street and mulch them into fertile soil so the world can begin to heal.
Yeah I think it’s impossible to treat people with dignity and respect indefinitely while also hoarding wealth like a dragon.
The situation where it’s still profitable to invest this way means that there’s some cross-flow of value from real to this which shouldn’t exist.
I dunno which. Maybe government handouts to corps, for example.
Or ads revenue from any engaging activity, not only good, made huge because of oligopolies.
Or closing holes with currency emission.
It shouldn’t be possible otherwise.
Venture Capital is probably the best way to drain the billionaires. Those billions in capital weren’t wasted, that money just went to pay people who do actual work for a living. What good is all that money doing just sitting in some hedge fund account?
I don’t think it’s the best way out of all possible options. Even if it does “create jobs”, a lot of those jobs aren’t producing much of wider value, and most of the wealth stays in the hands of the ownership class. And a lot of the jobs are exploitive, like how “gig workers” are often treated.
Changes to tax law and enforcing anti-trust stuff would probably be more effective. We probably shouldn’t have bogus high finance shenanigans either. We definitely shouldn’t have billionaires.
Oh sure, I was mostly being flippant. My response to the article is basically that billionaires losing billions is a good thing. I don’t feel optimistic enough to say we’ll get around to taxing them but yes, that would be ideal.
I think you have a point here. Venture capitalists buy in the primary market. They are directly impacting innovation.
Fund managers (both hedge and long only) merely help capital markets to be liquid. Their money doesn’t directly go to anyone actually creating something.
You think it might be??
Bro say that shit with some confidence.
Venture capital does not contribute beneficially to society.
Say it with your whole chest and both feet. Cuz it’s true.
I’ve been reading a book about Elizabeth Holmes and the Theranos scam, and the parallels with Gen AI seem pretty astounding. Gen AI is known to be so buggy the industry even created a euphemistic term so they wouldn’t have to call it buggy: Hallucinations.
Yeah I mean that’s r&d 20% success is pretty strong in a new field.
Yeah. I’d love to see this compared to other R&D success rates.
This isn’t unique to AI.
80% of new businesses fail, period.
Inside the first 10 years. We’ve been fucking around with AI for less than three.
AI has been around much longer than 3 years… LLM is just a new twist.
And for the most part it’s still powered by underpaid South Asian manpower lol.
PyTorch and TensorFlow have been around for 7+ years… If there are South Asians hiding in my computer, I’ll find them…
AI: Actually Indians

To be fair, a large fraction of software projects fail. AI is probably worse because there’s probably little notion of how AI actually applied to the problem so that execution is hampered from the start.

https://www.zdnet.com/article/study-68-percent-of-it-projects-fail/
This was my first thought. VC’s always expect 4 out of 5 projects they invest in to fail and always have. But it still makes them money because the successes pay off big. Is the money and resources wasted? Welcome to modern capitalism.
Welcome to AI:
The hype-cycle is the exception, not the norm. Very commonly stuff just ends up dying.
I doubt AI is going to die, it’s objectively useful in many cases. We just don’t need it absofuckinglutely everywhere.
AI not, but I’d be less certain about LLMs.
In a few years either people hate AI bots so much, that products with it start losing sales, or every coffee machine will have one. Exciting times ahead.
There’s a mobile game my spouse got me into. I am not normally a mobile gamer, they threw an ai assistant in there, and I think it is great. I can ask if how do I improve such and such, it tells me how or where to go. Which heros do best against this monster, it will tell me the lineups, so I can know where to focus things without writing it all down or searching the web or memorizing shit tons of information I won’t remember.
It’s it worth it for them, not sure. It also does the help junk that leads up to tech support or contacting a person if needed.
When did brute force switch from being an antipattern to the preferred pattern?

Superiority complex much? I agree that the decisions are bad, but I wouldn’t be so quick to blame it on “normies”. Some of the people calling the shots are techies or ex-techies and they’re just as stupid as the normies you decry in your logorrhea.
I don’t think it’s sane to consider yourself more intelligent than the rest of the world. We may be smarter than your average joe (citation needed), but not everyone working in the tech industry is a genius or even smart. We just have an area of expertise, like artists, doctors, plumbers, carpenters… And that is valuable in the modern world. That’s already reason enough to be proud about what we do, there’s no need for arrogance.
I am a well educated person who uses these forums and many others with regularity and I have many opinions on tech after working in both marketing and the tech sector for a long time.
That out of the way, I will simply skip over any comment that says “normies” unironically. Especially over and over.
This isn’t fucking 4chan, communicate like a human like the rest of us. You don’t get out of being one of us. I don’t even know your take because it’s so distracting and immature and condescending.
My unasked for opinion on the word “normies” - there are some real weirdies out there that got wires crossed and they sure don’t revel in their undesired uniqueness. People who can’t sleep for more than 5 minutes spans (she exists), folks sexually attracted to shoe horns, bros who can’t feel pain and burn their hands touching the stove. Be happy most everything ended up where it should and working reasonably well - it’s not a badge of honor to be an anamoulos fringe anything. I imagine it is painful and assume very lonely. Also there is nothing more fucking pedestrian than feeling uniquely misunderstood and alone. THAT is some normie shit.
This guy gets it.
Incel lingo is fundamentally disgusting in so many ways. It’s really funny that they have no idea how profoundly their stinksock echo chamber has shaped their writing style, you can pick out their reek pretty easily in any sane conversation.
What does the word “normie”, which is a derivative of “normal”, have to do with incels, who are a subculture of unlikable people calling themselves “involuntarily celibate” (which can’t be true if there are at least two incels near each other)?
There’s a lot to unpack but I think you aren’t being intellectually honest but that doesn’t matter.
-
The label ‘incel’ was co-opted by mostly hard-right chantards, taken from an online community with VERY different ideals that modern 4chan incels. The truth is most ‘modern’ incels are actually volcels (voluntary celibates) that actively poison their own minds with misogynistic male supremacy ideology, making them a special kind of terrible partner. Think ten million Andrew Tates but broke and with worse hygiene.
-
‘normie’ isn’t specifically incel speak, but rather chantard speak, of which modern incels often have their online social roots in. All Honda Civics are cars, but not all cars are Honda Civics.
-
Incels are loath to fuck each other because a) most are male and homophobic, and b) they already view each other as low quality partners per definition.
OK. I know that. So?
So you should know that not many people outside of the incelsphere use the word ‘normie’ unironically anymore. Lots of other groups used to, me being a part of several, and we stopped using it to avoid association a few years back but the chantards were being so loud with it that no one noticed really.
A lot of language works like that, when you see despicable people using a phrase that you commonly use, you generally tend to stop using them. Which is why there are things like corporate slogans and bumper stickers. All branding and identity.
So people self-segregate their language by creating new in-group words and retiring common definitions and whether or not they adopt out-group slang. This creates a unique fingerprint that, if a user is mostly exclusive to that slang group, they will treat the slang as common parlance and unconsciously slip into it when interacting with out-groups.
For example, when Digg died, it was common for redditors to call out the immigrating users for their particular line spacing which wasn’t really used on reddit at the time. Same language, slightly different slang, but fundamentally different message structure.
4chan’s 2016 crowd were super adept at sniffing out incoming redditors to a degree that almost makes me envious.
So when someone uses the phrase ‘normie’ like that, they are very likely to have spent most of their social upbringing (when linguistic adoption is still plastic) on chan-adjacent incel boards.
-
It doesn’t matter where it came from, if you’re steeped in this kind of language it’s a massive signpost that you’ve handicapped your own intellectual abilities in a profound way. Healthy, normal people with regulated feelings and stable perspectives grounded in reality do not frequent the communities that use this kind of language.
It’s a red flag that will always make the outside world laugh and reject what you have to say, and if your instinct is to retreat back into the places that use this language, you are going to absolutely SUFFER in life, this is a warning coming from a place of compassion, you HAVE to believe me.
I use all kinds of language when it fits my meaning.
I don’t think anything of what you said makes sense in this situation.
Do you honestly think your choice of words in this post led to you being heard and understood? Or do you think that everyone is just being mean bullies? THiiiiiiink hard about this one.
We need more people like you making this clear.
I saw what 4chan did to ‘the other site’, we DON’T need that shit here.
Also, as a logophile, your use of:
with regularity
absolutely makes me as giddy as a schoolgirl

Please be civil, and get off that high horse.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
As one of those weird autists who make computing too hard who’s been using Apple products for decades I really wonder where I fit in.
The answer is pretty simple. You are a “normie” with your own particularities, like every other human on this planet.
Don’t fall into the trap of thinking like the idiot you’re replying to that we are smarter than everybody else. In many cases, the dumb-dumbs calling the (stupid) shots are from within our ranks, or used to be techies, and that doesn’t make them immune to errors. The arrogance in the person you’re replying to is unwarranted, and they’re just plain wrong.
We’re not the chosen ones - we’re just as special as everybody else.
Oh, I have no illusions that I’m smarter than other people at their chosen profession. Hell, I’m an idiot at my chosen profession quite often.
Though I do wish people would stop calling me a “miracle worker” and “wizard” because I can get the wifi working.
As someone tired of this shit you fit in just fine, I’m only approaching that stage but can clearly feel it.
I stopped at “normies”. Lose the ego and grow up if you want people to listen to your opinions.
I stopped at “normies”.
There’s text after that sentence.
Lose the ego and grow up if you want people to listen to your opinions.

Thank you for using IPA instead of other cheap beers.
Alcohol is disgusting.
I saw a dell bill board the other day saying they put the Ai in ipa and it had a picture of a laptop and a beer
Wait, are they saying that if you remove them (ai) then you’re just left with P? That’s kinda funny
