It was only a matter of time. The anime aesthetic is clearly very popular, and mass media like anime has proven to be very good at generating soft power internationally. See my favorite quote from the fediverse:

I don’t even see any politics on my instance! listen dude, i actually support china because i play genshin impact

Fun fact: the Youtube equivalent in China, Bilibili, started out as a niche anime streaming site for weebs, which itself was a copy of a niche Japanese anime streaming site that featured “scrolling comments on screen”.

I still don’t know how that happened to be honest. There were quite a few strong competitors throughout the 2000s (Tudou, Youku etc.) but in the end it was a niche anime streaming site that took the entire market.

      On the other hand

I’m pretty critical of the CCP’s information control policies. But if they pledge to specifically oppress racist pedophilic weebs like you, I would pledge my soul to the immortal truth of Marxist-Xiism

Yuri communities talking about China always seem to do one of these three:

          1. Falsely claim or imply that homosexuality/ queer content is illegal in China.
          2. Bring up Tamen de Gushi. From what I read it was the publisher that demanded the censorship, not the government. Also there are still many other yuri manhua that is still published so it does not look like an institutional problem.
          3. They will say that Honkai Star Rail/ ZZZ/ Genshin is less gay than Honkai Impact 3

      some stand outs:

      spoiler [CW: racial slurs]

I’m not interested in censored chnk-shit.

You’re never getting proper fanservice in a Chinese animesque show.

love how twitter weebfashies don’t even try to hide the fact that they’re actual pedophiles

oh no! chinese cartoons aren’t sexualizing literal children! powercry-2

They can copy the style but it will probably just be generic shit.

because the japanese anime industry has been producing nothing but original and high quality content

So much cope in the replies, meanwhile Japanese studios are increasingly sucking in DEI money

      lol, lmao even

Funny thing is that across the JP sphere (including 2ch!) they’re mostly a mix of curiosity about the daily lives of Chinese girls and how it’ll differ from Japanese anime and nostalgia because it could have come straight out of 2014 Kirara (like Yuyushiki, Kiniro Mosaic, etc). Twitter manages to be more Hitler on behalf of Japan than Japan itself.

Oh shit do they have any favorites? I watched a few nearly a decade ago and they were pretty sloppy, so I’d be interested in a curated list

If you haven’t watched Link Click 时光代理人, please bump it up in your list. Season 1 was one of the best animated shows I’ve watched in a long time. Season 2 is still solid but falls into a pretty by-the-books police chase procedural with some supernatural elements.

Scissor Seven was on Netflix and was pretty fun, great animation over a paper thin plot with a few funny characters.

I’m keen to see what reccos others have.
