This is what it takes for you to finally leave discord? I would guess most people that have managed to stick around discord this long won’t even mind this.

I stopped using Discord way back when it always spun up my fans and made my phone hot just leaving it open.

Oh, the service itself is decent, up to great depending on your criteria. Pretty much never down, works well enough, etc.

It’s the privacy and bullshit behind the service that’s hated. Well, usually, some people hate the layout, and others hate the fact that it’s the default for so many people that it’s difficult to avoid.

Also don’t forget the walled garden. Some niche topics only have information and support on discord, which isn’t accessible to anyone like the general internet

Yeah, discord is excellent for what it was made: sharing memes and voice chat. But somehow it completely replaced classic discussion boards and it sucks at that.

it’s a venture capital-backed startup that has been very eager to exit its growth phase and enter its aggressive monetization phase so it can start making its shareholders some money. They’ve already tried a few things that didn’t work, like trying to turn it into a Steam competitor.

The service to date is mostly fine. If you’re like most people who don’t mind exchanging some privacy and control for access to an app that has a nonzero professional UX design budget, it’s pretty fantastic. But the writing has been on the wall for a long time that enshittification is near on the horizon. It’s not a question of if, but how soon.

In addition to other comments, it’s a terrible replacement for forums. Information gets buried quickly, is hard to sort and search through, and conversations get scrambled.

Oh, interesting. That’s like the one feature I don’t really use it for. It’s weird how subtle differences in what you were around for can make such big differences in what stuff you use. Like literally everyone I know or knew my age is on Discord. It’s our primary social platform. I’m in like 30 servers and active in 10 of them. I’m in the discord for every game I actively play. And every game has one, I just assumed that was a common thing to do.

But seeing peoples comments about negativity and other stuff, I have never seen that on discord. So I guess it makes sense why I didn’t get pushed away from it. It’s all been incredibly positive and great gaming communities for hanging out in. I can help so many people, usually when I play a game, I get pretty into it. So I tend to know alot about it, and it’s nice to be able to help out people with questions about it. I don’t know where else people that aren’t in a games discord go to ask those questions, usually the discords are pretty huge.

Methinks you have too much faith in those wielding the power to demand this. Examples abound of assholes - anyone from forum mods to police officers - abusing their power against those they look down upon. Yeah, it often comes back on them eventually, but not always, and in the meantime the lives of those they target can be made a living hell if they so choose.

“Questionable activity” is an easily abused term for power-tripping assholes. Especially with right-wing politics becoming so prevalent world-wide, it’s easy (for example) to imagine a scenario where a group of LGBTQ+ types are targeted for harassment - being forced to choose between losing their safe haven or outing themselves & putting themselves at risk of far worse.

They do technically still offer a “manual review”, which is what they do now, where you have to take a photo using any kind of camera with your photo ID and email it… which isn’t really better, and can be very, very slow in actually regaining access to an account.

NTTS is someone I’ve watched for a while who spends lots of time looking at and reporting on upcoming discord features, as well as scams and CSAM material on the platform. He’s very clear in the videos when something is rumored, added to the client as a beta feature, etc.

Articles are so much better than videos a lot of the time. I’ll watch a video for kinetic things, like how to flush my radiator etc.

Its annoying when information is in a video that could easily be written out and skimmed.

Every way. It’s just a confusing mess. It looks like one of those early 2k websites with a gazzilion animated gifs and whatnot. The layout is full of unnecessary padding and channels and other bullshit features. Not even starting on the fact that it always wants me to get my password and do a two factor authentification + captcha on every visit, or that it does not seem to be able to detect my audio devices properly.

I don’t see any animations at all unless someone has posted a gif. Channels are a core feature, as on many similar platforms.

If it’s continually giving you issues with devices and authentication, it’s probably due to a misconfiguration in your browser, e.g. you have it set to clear cookies on exit, or you have device access permission blocked.

It happens with the actual app as well. So no. And other apps have no problems identifying my audio devices. This is simply a common issue with Discord on Linux, among many others that they don’t bother fixing.

I used to run a Revolt server 3 years ago. The sound quality was beyond any other WebRTC service I had tried, but it was still in an early and it was lacking a lot of features. So, I switched to Element and Jitsi.
