This misses the most important part.

Every other part of history is crammed just before the 1900s, as a big lump sum. Who cares how long ago the 1600s are, it’s basically the same as the 1900s, right?

To me, the Victorian era doesn’t feel that long ago. It had gothic horror novels, root beer, telephones, and cameras. I was recently talking with somebody who personally knew somebody who was a pioneer in the 1860s. In comparison, Ancient Rome or Mesopotamia feels really freaking long ago.

I remember reading somewhere that this is the case because we tend to track the passage of time compared to amount of our life it is. So like 10-20 was half your life, 20-30 was a third of your life… etc

My “nice” 2008 Toyota Sienna minivan is older now than my “old” 1991 Land Cruiser was when my dad handed it down to me in 2006.

We are currently further from the release of the song “1989” than the release was from actual 1989.
