Elon actually hands these out to people who don’t want them because they were unpopular and an easy means of telling chuds apart from… uh, chads? There’s a good chance hers is a forced advertisement and not something she’s actually paying for.

That’s like saying “everyone has a hobby” when you witness someone picking fights in public. Some hobbies and spaces are objectively worse than others.

That’s a really bad argument given one of those chambers is literally run by, and full of, nazis.

I mean this one is run mostly by people who agree with what is being said in the echo chamber too.

Though the architecture of the Fediverse does make it impossible for it to become as bad as the commercial ones.

Both sides? Good grief. Not everything has to be a you vs them. And of course there is a higher number on Twitter. They have, what, 300 million active users? And Lemmy is probably .001% of that.

So are an insanely large amount of people.

I don’t think people on here realise that we are in an echo chamber ourselves and often times not very forgiving of people with differing opinions, where I would assume we should want to bring people to our point of view by being accepting and trying to educate on our beliefs.

So in this echo chamber of what 50K MAUs it can sometimes be hard to keep sight of the fact we are the smallest of minorities in this space and what we see is absolutely not a representation of what most people in the world care about.

I’ve never used Twitter but I’m not going to shit on other people for using it.

Were you on Reddit when they had loads of jailbait subs? Would you like to labelled as part of that same group just because you shared the same space?

Does it not seem reasonable that some people might use Twitter as a means to keep in the loop and not isolate from the crazies, Nazis, bigots or whatever. You can’t converse with the other side if you ain’t where they are at and if we all stay in our own echo chambers what are we really achieving other than a self-righteous circle jerk?

To be abundantly clear I am including myself in this too and not just calling you out. But this place is exhausting at times, I am the most cynical person I know and this place really gives me a run for my money at times. Even in the less serious stuff, like you can’t oppose Linux here you’ll be downvoted to shit for even having a different opinion. You have to use FOSS everything, and you should even be eating open source food 😂

That’s your prerogative, but I wonder if you see the danger of all people online splitting into their own groups?

The way I see it is you have a place just filled with say Nazis then they’re never going to learn or understand different perspectives and they’re going to become more radical.

Nazis don’t understand different perspectives. It’s essentially the definition.

That said, I see value in posting for the peanut gallery (when I encounter Nazis here, I don’t go on Twitter).

But debating Nazis? Hoping to change their minds?

This reads like you making the assumption that people are born Nazis and it’s not a learned behaviour.

Some people can hold their beliefs because of the environment they grew up in and many can actually change if people actually cared about educating people and not just feeling superior.

I want to stress this is only my opinion and I respect that you have yours too.

Yes I guess harakiri is the act of disemboweling yourself and seppuku is the ceremony surrounding it.

Not quite but I can see why people think so. Both words stem from the same Kanji pair: 腹切. Abdomen cut.

But one is read natively (harakiri) with an informal and colloquial feel to it and the other uses borrowed Chinese readings (seppuku) that makes it sound more formal/ritualistic to be used in formal settings. But they mean the same thing and both refer to the ritual.

A similar example is Japan’s own name: 日本. It’s usually read as “nihon” but has a special, formal reading of “nippon”.

I named one of our dumber work projects ‘project seppeku’ once. Boss was not amused when someone told him what it meant, but it went undiscovered for longer than I would have imagined, which simultaneosly made me happy and hurt my feelings.

Harikari = seppuku. They’re even written with the same kanji characters.

Oh, and harikari usually has a helper.

Other way around. Seppuku is the whole ritual, which includes the helper. But if you just gut yourself out in the woods with no ceremony, it’s harikiri

To really put this to rest:

Harakiri and Seppuku both literally mean abdomen/stomach cutting. Those who know some Japanese may recognize hara from the common phrase hara hetta which means you are hungry (literally, your stomach is decreasing in size or diminishing). Kiri means cut.

              腹: hara 切: kiri

Seppuku simply reverses those kanji: 切腹

Why are they pronounced differently? Harakiri is a native Japanese word, using more traditional Japanese pronunciation Seppuku is a borrowing of middle Chinese roots: setsu from Middle Chinese tset meaning to cut, and fuku from Middle Chinese pjuwk, related to modern Mandarin fūk, referring to your abdomen.

So, setsufuku was shortened to seppuku where the Ps represent a stop and skipping of part of the word.

Alexandra Doten is a science communicator and astronomy content creator who rose to fame on TikTok during the COVID-19 pandemic. Doten, a Vanderbilt graduate, interned at NASA for two summers and worked as a communications specialist after graduation. She later transitioned to the U.S. Space Force. Doten is known for her storytelling, which she says has inspired people to pursue careers in astronomy and space, and to invest in astrophotography equipment.

Not to give credit to Twitter verified assholes, but comms specialist is not a specific astronomy or aerospace field.

A former space communications specialist with NASA and later, the U.S. Space Force, today, I am an independent consultant to space organizations around the world. I write and develop brand strategies, educational presentations, speeches, and social media content.

And I harbor some pretty strong opinions about NASA’s public and internal administration for the past 30 years.

Two preventable shuttle disasters and a hacksaw outsourced attempt to return to the moon are not what I would consider quality projects. Modern NASA is the epitome of wasted talent.
