Thank you Spez for banning my account of nine years for voicing my political opinion! I made many contributions to communities over the years and now you’ve lost that so good fucking bye.

Once you’re banned, do your previous posts and comments get deleted? Or do you just lose access to them?

You can still browse and your comments still remain up. But you can no longer post or comment further. I’ll still get upvotes / replies to old comments. I just can’t respond

When the account is banned is still possible to edit or delete own comments or posts?

Consider running that script that goes over each post or comment and replace it with random words, just to poison their ai training

When I tried that script in 2023 it didn’t work. Just go back and delete your best. If you can. Good luck.

It’s truly astounding, isn’t it? Like, is there any investment that hasn’t totally killed the product? You can feel when a company switches over too to the investors. It doesn’t matter what the product is.

Like, take the website ModCloth. Started as a vintage fashion reseller. It was like a little community that was attached to a e-commerce store.

Walmart subsidiary bought them out. Changed over the website. Deleted everyone’s usernames, information, and profiles. And with it over a decade of user posts and photos. Website stopped selling any good quality vintage style clothes. The entire reason anyone shipped there. It’s just like drop shopped tshirts with stolen art now. What the fuck.

I can think of a hundred more examples. Investors buying any company should sound like a banshee scream.

                It’s very inconvenient.

I have a project right now that needs a good unique title, and since Google is now flying blind through a soup of AI gibberish I have no way of telling whether the titles I think up are unique.

Last time I went through this process it was so easy.

It’s always been like that. They’re parasite - they ruin the thing they latch on to, then they jump ship with fat stacks of cash and move on to the next product to kill.

except that not all parasites harm their host. in nature, “parasites” range from a mutually beneficial relationship to the destruction of their host.

these are the bad type of parasites, also called diseases

It was either you or Tildes.

I went with Tildes originally, but their admirable effort to only encourage long-form discussion works against growing a user base to be anything more than a Petri dish; people need those fast dopamine hits!

        …that and they’re invite only.

They also appear to be developing a bit of a cult around the owner of Tildes which can feel a but offputting.

When I was there they were actually telling each other to govern their speech based on what they thought the creator (of Tildes) intended by various rules. He arbitrarily removes entire threads he doesn’t like so they are incentivised to care a lot about that.

as did i, first it was politics, then news and aww, and my later accts caught those and more. simply for misconstured statements. and then reddit look back at your “deleted accts which had sub bans” and retroactively banned all your active accounts.

Honestly, I shouldn’t still be pissed about my ban but I can’t help it.

I was on reddit for over 10 years with millions of fake internet points

Sitewide banned me for no discernable reason

It’s been a couple of months and they still haven’t even bothered to respond to my appeal

Now that I see how reddit’s going down the tube, I don’t even care if they respond at this point

    I’m done with it

I agree with applying healthy skepticism to any and all stories. At the same time, I can’t blame a recent Reddit refugee for not fully trusting Lemmy yet. They don’t know the environment here. It makes sense for someone to be apprehensive about repeating a thing that just got them banned somewhere else.

But I hope OP feels comfortable enough here to share their story some day.

I got a warning for upvoting a Luigi post (or a post that reddit deemed as “wrongthink”), the bot didn’t say which sub or post that triggered it so it’s kind of impossible to say for sure or even avoid getting banned from upvoting something they don’t like.

And just think, you guys were the ones who didn’t leave back when it was going down the shitter because you disagreed with the opinions of the people they were banning.

This isn’t even exactly a haven for wrongthink either. /r/fatpeoplehate couldn’t exist on Lemmy, so most people coming over aren’t even really concerned with political opinions being silenced, so much as they care about their particular political opinion being silenced.

It absolutely could exist. It’s just likely that a lot of servers would defederate them. That’s kind of the beauty of federation.

Well there ya go. Turns out the fediverse isn’t about freedom from corporations - and it’s just about creating your own brand of filter bubble.

Turns out, those are sort of the same thing. You are given the power to shape your feed how you want it instead of how some corporation wants it.

Yes, but federation controls that on a wider level by adjusting what you’re allowed to see and interact with. Therefore, someone above you gets to control that still. That’s the point I’m making.

If everything federated by default, and users could sign up for filter lists or something to make it easy - sure. But that’s not how it works.

Lemmy even did the same thing Reddit is doing now, where if you mentioned a certain topic they were banning people; but they walked it back. I believe it was even the same topic of Luigi and “advocating violence”.

Therefore, someone above you gets to control that still.

There is nothing stopping you from running your own Lemmy instance and choosing to federate with whomever you choose.

Lemmy even did the same thing Reddit is doing now

Which Lemmy instance? If you don’t like it, just join a different one.

This is all the beauty of not only federation, but also open source.

It really depends. World is friends with pretty much everyone with a few notable exceptions. There are definitely instances that care about that, but you can’t force an isolationist instance to communicate with you.

Freedom goes both ways. It also means freedom to form a bubble.

I use this it doesn’t work. In the sense that, to you your post may seem gone. But Reddit can and will restore them.

It’s not just that. The comment history doesn’t go back further than 1000 posts. They are still there when you find an old or saved thread somehow. But the power delete suite uses the comment history and will miss a lot of older comments from a simpler time.
