A really big part of me wishes we would do this but a smaller part of me thinks that the approach of Carney to less provocatively disentangle our economies while minimizing harm to our workers and industries is actually for the best

That said, I do believe that Teslas actually contain very little if any Canadian parts, so even a flat-out ban on Tesla imports will likely do little harm to Canadian workers. And while we don’t really make much electric vehicles locally, we can import European ones which would help tighten our relations with them as a bonus.

Sorry. I wasn’t clear in my earlier comment.

I meant that the US administration would react poorly to a provocation like targeting Tesla specifically and lash out in ways that cause further harm.

So while I would personally choose to start a public pissing contest because I’m mad as hell— Carney’s more mature approach will cause less pain in the short term.

The good news is that Canadians are rejecting Teslas with or without any tariffs. Which is maybe even a bigger FU to Musk because he can’t even blame a government for his failures. I drive a South Korean EV and it’s a fantastic vehicle, and as you said some of the European ones are quite good too.

Yea, while I don’t agree with a lot of things Carney is planning on doing, I have to admit that he is quite mature and actually acts like an adult when under pressure. It’s good to see a cool head to lead this country when people have such a habit at instant knee-jerk reactionary actions lately.

Notably the Canadian countermeasure will have no tariffs on Mexican auto products and none on car parts from US or Mexico, unlike the US side tariffs.

I think tariffing auto parts would end up punishing people who already have an American car and need to repair it.

You’d think. But a lot of “import” brands manufacture in North America…well, for the vehicles that are for the domestic market anyway. Won’t effect boy racer and his Skyline…
