• Large protests are expected across the U.S. on Saturday to express voice discontent with President Trump’s administration.
  • Organizers aim to make the protests accessible by holding events in many places, including small towns.
  • The protests reflect growing momentum and dissatisfaction with Trump’s policies on immigration, transgender rights, and the firing of federal workers.

Remember, folks: avoid attempts by bad actors to turn your peaceful legal protest into a riot, 47’s itching for an excuse to invoke martial law and seize more power. Disable biometrics on any phone you bring. Make sure someone knows where you’re going and is waiting to hear you made it home. Don’t post pictures or videos that identify people, who may be risking a lot more than you by being there. You don’t want to be the reason ICE disappears someone. Protect yourself from teargas but also from plain old sunburn and dehydration.

Itching, he wants to invoke it, using specifically the insurrection act of 1807, tomorrow they may push it earlier then 90 days since it was always part of project 2025 and also due the senate most likely passing a bill to limit his power for tariff by needing approval from them to be used, so they enact it just a bit earlier to make sure national emergency still exist. Don’t be surprised if it is invoked as this was always planned as part of project 2025.

Problem is, 47, his henches, the entire GOP and cops in general have zero ability to feel shame or remorse, and nobody who does has the power to stop them. I think protesting peacefully but being ready to run and scatter seems to increase the likelihood you’ll live to protest again.

If you went to that site specifically to find a local chapter’s phone number to write, the correct link to that page is: https://www.nlg.org/chapters/

I’ve tested some and they work good if properly wrapped shut, but probably better for day-to-day use and less for such an event where you’d probably be best just to leave it home. Phones use radio frequencies from 14MHz (NFC) to 39GHz (5G mmWave) with spec up to 71GHz. It is real hard to get a radio wave blocker bag that can block almost every conceivable frequency band in the RF spectrum.

It is also hard to truly turn phones off anymore, many broadcast Bluetooth beacons when powered off, and even outside of that, they leave dead-reckoning tracking turned on that can extrapolate where you may have gone just by how you walk. It is also why a phone turned off can still have a dead battery in a month or two, because stuff is kept running, when older phones truly turned off and you could pick it up a year later and still have a charge.

EE here - a well sealed foil pouch should work just fine for basically all RF radiation. Even at a few MHz a piece of heavy duty aluminum foil has like 150dB of attenuation, and that goes up to basically infinity above 1GHz.

If you don’t want to be tracked down afterwards based on your phone’s location, turning it off will suffice.

If you fear to get arrested, you should just leave it at home or somewhere it cannot be found too easily.

And if you do take it along, set your lock screen to a pin, not a fingerprint. There are still some legal protections left (for now), and police can make you unlock a fingerprint but not a pin. I know, it’s silly, but that’s how it works.

You need the phone turned off, and the offline Bluetooth most phones these days broadcast also disabled. The NFC could also passively respond, although that would require more clever engineering to make a directional NFC scanner. ISO 15693 apparently extends the NFC distance to 3 feet.

Try wrapping it in aluminum foil. You can test to see if it works by trying to call your phone from another phone while it’s wrapped up.

I don’t know your threat model, but if airplane mode is not enough, then I wouldn’t trust wrapping it in tinfoil either, as that would be less reliable. There are of course better ways than both of these methods. Like leaving your phone home.

No, in fact airplane mode often keeps Bluetooth and WiFi powered up until manually disabled, depending on the phone model, sometimes other radios as well. It also keeps GPS on so the phone can still track where it goes while in airplane mode.

I’ve never had a phone that keeps Bluetooth or Wi-Fi on when enabling airplane mode, but sure, if yours does that then of course also disable them separately.

Airplane mode is supposed to stop any radio transmission from your device. GPS does not transmit anything, so there is no reason to disable it.

Yes, what’s your point? Airplane mode turns off the cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. You can then turn Wi-Fi and Bluetooth back on if you choose to, which only leaves the cellular network disabled.

If you really can’t bear to be without a phone, get 2 burners. Put the number of each on the other. Nothing else. Bring one, and give the other to the person who might need you urgently or might be able to bail you out. You can write their burner number on yourself for EMTs to call, without giving police any justification for getting into their real phone.

So. I have had some recent experiences that have been… Very educational about a lot of the less thought aspects of technology that most people take for granted. H Most faraday bags you can buy are fucking garbage. None of them hurt in the grand scheme of things but they more involved this but I can’t do calculus so feel free to do the math). At around the 5 and 6 ghz range (guess what frequency wifi 6 and 5g operate at?) the gap size in a faraday cage needs to be something like 1-2mm.

Of course you’re not talking about a farDy cage, but a shielded bag. So buy one, close it with the Velcro clasp, and ask yourself: how snug is sealed Velcro? How much can I roll this up? And all the other myrad questions that lead to the same fucking conclusion: this is not the radio blocking solution you thought it was.

This isn’t to say you can’t buy a faraday bag that works (even if it does you may need more than one) it’s that as the frequency it gets increasingly difficult to block the signals coming in and out.

And I don’t understand the math, at all, but I’m not sure how the power of a signal would effect a faraday bag. Like.im assuming it would but.

Anyway…my point is: if you’re bringing a faraday make very, very, very,VERY fucking sure it actually works.

How do you do that? I’m not 100% be t I’m pretty sure the equipment needed is complicated and expwnaive.

Someone more knowledgeable can expand on any of this, . Since everything I’ve learned on the subject has been severely limited by the fact that the Internet is a fucking wasteland.

EDIT: a real win, not a social media victory. something that changes the course of our trajectory on a long term scale. something that reduces human suffering for the next century.

one of us will get to come back here and say “i told you so”. i don’t care how it gets done, but from my years of observation, it’s not going to be protests. not unless they become riots, which is a different beast than carrying signs.

but the problem is, once it becomes riots, then we’re sitting ducks, unorganized and mostly still ineffective. i’m just trying to save us from that pain. if you’re willing to riot, then you’re willing to take a calculated approach.

                  https://www.transcend.org/tms/2019/05/the-3-5-rule-how-a-small-minority-can-change-the-world/

Nonviolent protests are twice as likely to succeed as armed conflicts – and those engaging a threshold of 3.5% of the population have never failed to bring about change.

There are, of course, many ethical reasons to use nonviolent strategies. But compelling research by Erica Chenoweth, a political scientist at Harvard University, confirms that civil disobedience is not only the moral choice; it is also the most powerful way of shaping world politics – by a long way.

Looking at hundreds of campaigns over the last century, Chenoweth found that nonviolent campaigns are twice as likely to achieve their goals as violent campaigns. And although the exact dynamics will depend on many factors, she has shown it takes around 3.5% of the population actively participating in the protests to ensure serious political change.

Whatever crazy thing it is you’re planning to do, just remember the shooting in Pennsylvania. That gave the Trump campaign so much credibility that it might have even won him the election. Even my neighbor replaced the American flag on his lawn with one showing Trump’s face with a bloody ear. The GOP message is that there’s a conspiracy/evil cabal trying to undermine America, and they’re the good guys.

Large scale peaceful protests showing that America disagrees with their nonsense is much more powerful than any well-placed bullet. The former can lead to change and possibly even impeachments, the latter to civil war, death, and destruction.

Excuse my patronization, but I’m getting exhausted at having to explain it over and over for defeatist Americans. You have to keep up the fight even if it’s not perfect. It brings people together. It motivates people to action and become stronger as a group rather than divided as individuals. You have a country to save from the destruction and occupation by the billionaire class. There’s so many more normal Americans than there are billionaires, you all need to be in a big group to begin to realize that. If you’ve given up, the 1%ers win by default. A movement is brewing, be part of the solution rather than throwing it away because it’s not completely coherent yet. Start peacefully, take precautions as necessary, let them put all Americans on a list and prosecute you unjustly. Pre-emptive capitulation is how you all got here.

You think peacefully occupying some sidewalk will prevent this? Perhaps if these crowds appeared outside their mansions instead of buildings that oligarchs never need to set foot in? Why are these large gatherings organized for the most ineffectual areas? Almost as if they’re being purposefully steered away from said oligarchs mansions? They’re people with names and addresses, not some symbolic building of mystical legislative omnipotent powers.

It’s fascinatingly dumb how short-sighted they are. Do they like having money? People deported, in jail, dead, unemployed, homeless can’t buy their stuff. A delusional hope of feeding off government money only works until the government no longer has a use for you, or decides to just take you over and you become part of the government.

It is in their best interests to support the masses, but they can’t ever see past 3 months in the future.

To begin with, Franco was not strictly comparable with Hitler or Mussolini. His rising was a military mutiny backed up by the aristocracy and the Church, and in the main, especially at the beginning, it was an attempt not so much to impose Fascism as to restore feudalism. This meant that Franco had against him not only the working class but also various sections of the liberal bourgeoisie—the very people who are the supporters of Fascism when it appears in a more modern form.

From Orwell’s “Homage to Catalonia”, emphasizes added.

The bourgeoisie aligning to the resistance has happened before. Now, make no mistake: they will betray the movement as soon as it’s in their interests to do so. Don’t trust them past the current crisis.

Don’t even trust them now. Nothing has happened yet. We can say that they took our side after MAGA is out of power and the extremist apparatus that supported them is totally destroyed.

If there’s one lesson we can learn from Trump, it’s that it’s much easier to destroy something than it is to build it. IF we gain power again, we need to take that lesson to heart, and turn it against the fascists who gleefully applied it to the American people, and the rest of the democratic world.
