I think the popular idea is that Mentos reacts with Diet Coke, not regular Coke, but apparently people mainly use diet because it doesn’t leave as much of a sticky mess afterwards.

According to Steve Spangler, he used Diet Coke not because it’s more reactive, but because it didn’t contain sugar , and thus made cleanup much easier than with regular coke.

Found it, and I was slightly mistaken:

Why should you use diet soda? The simple answer is that it just works better than regular soda. Some people speculate that it has something to do with artificial sweeteners. More importantly, diet soda does not leave a sticky mess to have to clean up. Hey, that’s important for your clean up! [Source]

Anyone who thinks diet soda doesn’t leave a sticky mess has never spilled a diet soda before.

I’d guess that it’s because the diet stuff doesn’t have as much corn syrup which would inhibit the foaming

Not many trucks have sign writing on the top either.

And to think, all those trucks squandered a perfect opportunity to advertise to you!

Don’t worry. In transit Coke is almost pure acid. It won’t react violently with Mentos.

Assuming that the truck isn’t transporting bottles and cans of soda for convenience and grocery stores.
