Would it be possible for someone to give me a TLDR of the background of this? The other comments make the drama sound so interesting and I want to learn the backstory.

They wanted to write more drivers in Rust. They sought the approval of one of the key maintainers of part of the Linux kernel even though their approval wasn’t needed. That guy rejected any new Rust code due to personal dislike. Obviously this upset people, and Linus didn’t step in to manage the dispute until the drama had blown up.

I think that I agree with Lina on this one. This article heavily sides with Danilo and her initial message is clear enough : she asks to remain primary author. It should have ended there with Danilo saying “ok no prob, here it is corrected” and it would have ended there.

Why then did she say she didn’t care? She clearly cares a lot.

I don’t know if there’s more context, but at least as included in the article, it’s “feel free to take anything that’s useful and use it/submit it in any way” but that’s quite clearly not what she actually meant.

She repeatedly says “she wants out” but yet she apparently doesn’t really want out because she still wants to be in the creds. For not caring anymore she’s caring a whole lot.

To want out does not mean not to have your work recognised as such. It is still your work, you just grant permission to use it as necessary and attribute correct ownership.

If you read the conversation, its clear that Lina is toxic for no reason. She needs to to out and touch some grass.

AND YOU DID IT IN A LANGUAGE I DON’T LIKE FOR ESOTERIC REASONS DESPITE THE FACT THAT IT CAN ELIMINATE ENTIRE CATEGORIES OF BUGS BY SIMPLE NATURE OF ITS SYNTAX AND COMPILER REEEEEEEE

Genuinely, the vociferous pushback against Rust by a small minority of irrational C purist assholes is so, so dumb.

Torvalds drama is at least some “drama” with flesh and bones, with a good reason behind it. Not a ghost drama for no reason.

Any legal experts want to weigh in on whether this is even allowed? CC0 by definition has no limitations, but GPL very explicitly has limitations for what the code can be used for, and also applies to derivatives. If it was their own code but was officially submitted to the Linux repo, who owns it and gets to decide how the code can be licensed?

Original author retains the right to re-license anything they release. So for example I’ve created artwork and related it under a non-commercial license. No one else can use if for profit, but if one day I want to, I can, I can also grant someone a comercial license if I choose. But the original work can still be used by anyone for anything non-commercial.
