it’s a good time for them, dispassionately speaking- Ocean freight is down, meaning you’re looking for nearshoring (Mexico and Canadian cross border freight), meaning you want more over the road shipping across large land masses than shipping to a port.

The 75 mph 40 ton AI driven trolley problem … coming soon to an interstate near you! Will the semi swerve to kill the family of 5 in the Dodge Caravan, or continue forward and smash through the construction site to kill one construction worker.

You could also play a 70 mph hour version of “Red Light/Green Light” when the autonomous semi truck randomly slams its breaks and does a hard stop on the interstate because it’s LiDAR system suddenly perceived an overpass or guard rail on a curve as a brick wall.

We have 20 years before autonomous trucks are a threat to trucking careers … but about 3 years before they are a threat to everyone on the road.

These things are already on the road in Texas. I’d be shitting my pants every time I got on the interstate if I lived there.

I don’t really understand song lyrics (rap’s generally easier to understand, but not Eminem, lol), so that’s the first time I realized how it goes and I strongly identify with this.

My parents were both born in 1950, and one of my aunts was born five years earlier. I know those are literally two different generations, but also figuratively. My parents’ favorite musicians were Eric Clapton and Donovan, and my aunt’s was Elvis, the latter of which seemed unbearably old fashioned to me as a kid (and I was born about 30 years after Clapton and Donovan became relevant, but they were still at least enjoyable to listen to even when I was very young).

1946-64 are boomers, my aunt is silent generation at 1945, though she’s definitely on the cusp.

She’s postwar. Boomer by definition. Silent generation is for children raised during the war.

Eta: I looked up the dates and I can see a lot of sources that give the 1946 date so consensus is on your side. I’m old, but the boundary used to be those who were raised during the war vs those who wouldn’t have any memory of it. There is the same argument on the other side as well where late boomers claim to be “Generation Jones” between boomers and X.

Yeah, they’re all pretty close to the border no matter what. I was honestly just throwing that in because I was saying that they seemed like they were different generations personality-wise (my aunt also married at 20 a man a decade older than she was, so that plays a role) and I figured someone was going to reply that they technically were from different generations.

Meanwhile, my goofy ass was born five years after you. I spent a huge chunk of my childhood sitting at the foot of my bed with an old Caliphone record player listening to the Elvis readers digest collection.

My grandmother was obsessed to a level that was quite insane.

My poor grandpa had to make love to his wife under a giant picture of Elvis Presley, and he knew good and well where she was pretending to be. Her cars all had a huge silhouette of Elvis on the back glass and one on the hood with the text reading something like “#1 Elvis Fan”. “‘at was ‘uh perdiest man who ever lived right ‘tar.” Said Grandma.

You would think her obsession would have made me feel the way you felt about it. Something is wrong with me though haha.

I will say, I rarely listen to Elvis now. If I do it’s just a way to connect with little kid me.

The Beatles though, I listen to them every day and I have my whole life.

I worked as an assistant in a plastic surgery office for a while as well, and I had to clean lipoaspirate out of the suction tube/syringe and the erlenmyer flask it was emptied into. That was still preferable to the time it got splattered on my scrubs because the surgeon emptied it into a kidney basin the first time. (The flask was my idea to prevent getting splattered again.)

Human body’s just chalk full of gunk. Ok this one ain’t got the squeamish so if your easily grossed out quit readin here.

One time the OR put out a memo stating that in order to save money we would start reprocessing (cleaning/disinfecting /sterilizing) colostomy bags. Now technically this is possible, as if you can scrub something clear of visible debris and biofilm the low level sterilization fluid “should” do its job. But I’ll tell yea, that’s not a task I’d wish on anyone. I spent 45 minutes cleaning the first (and only) one we got, gagging through my N95 till my boss came in and was like “DUDE THROW THAT SHIT AWAY WE AINT DOIN THAT!”. I thanked him, stripped my PPE off, scrubbed the metaphysical crap from my being and chain-smoked till I couldn’t smell anymore. I generated a phobia of human feces that day.

As an ED tech, I had to clean up C diff and chemo diarrhea off patients, beds, floors, and commodes multiple times. ED boarding meant that patients that should have been admitted to hospital rooms that had a bathroom attached were stuck in the ED for hours or even days.

A year isn’t even enough time to give yourself proper liver disease, unless it’s acute. But then you have a better chance of straight up dying from alcohol poisoning or DUI.

Can I be real with you for a little? I got broken up with by the girl that got me to start working again. The moment I got into okish shape, she dipped. The ones I have met via the apps, have asked me to get back to my old self.

I didn’t know what that means, but I am far from someone who needs advice(even though I do need to lose a few inches from my waistline). But I don’t need to be reminded! I do a good enough job of insulting myself.

Trucking is so bad for you. I did a couple of years and gained more weight than I care to mention. You sit in that seat for 16 hours a day. You tell yourself you’re going to eat healthy and exercise, but by the time you shut down for the night you’re exhausted. You eat a shitty carb heavy meal and sleep on it. Then you do it again.

Really we need to let truckers do uppers again. This drug free attitude we’ve adopted just isn’t healthy! JK about that last part. Kinda

How old are you, or were you? Not saying there are no younger people who pack on weight, I’ve just found it’s harder to stay in shape as I get older. And if you’re not trying at all, this can happen to anyone. Course you his guy may have always been like that.
