TL;DR

  • Google announced Intrusion Logging, a new Android 16 feature to help high-risk users detect if their device has been compromised by hackers.
  • It securely backs up encrypted activity logs (like network info and app installs) to the cloud, accessible only to the user for forensic analysis.
  • The feature uses the new Intrusion Detection API, isn’t enabled by default, and requires activating Advanced Protection mode to use.

You have bigger things to worry about if you are worried about google being an adversary while using a Google OS with play services and google apps.

Google is not the only thing you have to worry about. Your phone carrier can also have erroneous location data.

I read this more of a cops being shitty story.

If you don’t have location turned off and all cell radios off all the time, you are also at risk.

That’s good, until you have family members that need to contact you for something.

And worse case scenario, you won’t be there for a loved one and make important medical decisions as their next-of-kin.

That’s the whole point of a phone, to act as a communications device.

I think the only solutions to this is bringing back the pagers. With the Standard Operating Procedure be having airplane mode on all the time, with a receive-only device that will alert you if someone want to contact you.

You think just because airplane mode is turned on means the phone isnt still functional?

WiFi still works in airplane mode. WiFi calling exists, Signal Exists. I dont need to be on my phone for the 20 or so minutes I’ll be without connection in the car, and everywhere offers free WiFi. Use a VPN + randomized mac and you might as well be an anonymous anomaly.

I also find it dubious at best that in less than 20 years people have completely forgotten you don’t have to be reachable at all times. You used to have to share a landline between a family of 5, and you werent always home. Before that, you had to either send a letter or go find that person physically. People can function without having to be contactable 24/7

Android is supposed to be a (mostly) open-source OS. Users shouldn’t have to worry about Google.

Android is. The problem is that everyone submits their apps to the Google Store, and then use Google tools to make them dependent on Google services. So while you can fairly trivially not install any of Google’s proprietary software, it’s functionality is going to be heavily limited without them.
