The only drug I’ve done that distorted time like this was 5-MeO-DiPT. It slowed songs down and pitched them down… then sped them up and pitched them up. Songs I was insanely familiar with. It was the most bizarre thing.

I really fucking hate the interpretation that it means it only prohibits punishments that are both cruel and unusual. I could easily see someone making the (bullshit) argument that 1,000 year sentences are not unusual. Many “life” sentences are technically hundreds of years.

I’m struggling to find an interpretation under which artificially extending the psychologically feelable length of the punishment of a prisoner is not unusual. Fortunately, it’s not likely to come into effect. Still, the cruelty is astounding
One might argue that because we already sentence people for hundreds of years for things that actually causing them to serve those sentences rather than dying is not unusual.
I still think it’s unusua, myself. Using substances to elicit pain is not typical.
Sentences are meant to signal for how long can the Government deprive an individual of their liberty, it under no circumstances allows the Government to torture a prisoner with psychoactive drugs. It’s specifies actual, real time, not how the prisoner perciceves it. Under the same logic, the prisoner could use the idiomatic expressions ‘it’s been a lifetime’ to claim his life sentence is served.
A legal system that imposes sentences longer than a human life seems to be deeply broken.
I believe there was an episode of Black Mirror that showed that this was a heinous idea.

Same here. That is in my top 3 soul crushing Black Mirror episodes. The others are “15 Million Merits” and “White Bear”. It can be hard to watch that show, especially the older seasons.
I really miss that sense of dread the older episodes invoked. I can’t seem to find anything else like it, not even the best of new black mirror. I’ll take recommendations of any medium really. It’s one of my favorite genres? Vibes? Idk.
I’ve also been looking for that sort of thing. Only one I’ve found is electric sheep, and it’s not… idk it’s not quite as uncomfortable?

I haven’t forgotten this comment! It is really hard, like I said I haven’t found a substitute and it’s my favorite genre I actively look it out.
Also I think it is really subjective but I did just watch a doctor who episode (2024 s1e4) titled boom that felt like a family friendly message and environment that I could see in black mirror. The plot not so much. You don’t even need any context for the series as it is both early in the reboot and kind of a bottle episode. An alien travels space and time with a friend and lands in the middle of a battlefield wasteland on an alien planet and steps on a landmine.
If you like reading or can tell me more about what you like about black mirror I could maybe make more suggestions. For example I love media that, for lack of a better word, is political at the core. It wants to criticize something in our culture, or take it to an extreme and see what that might look and feel like.

Ah yes. Why consider funding rehabilitation programs when we could be drastically increasing the punitive aspect of incarceration?
I would think that most people, given 1000 years to grow, would come out of the experience changed for the better. There’s nothing saying that the 1000 year sentence would be torture, it could be 200 years of showing you the consequences of your actions as they had been, and then 800 years showing how to be a better person.
The real torture would be getting pulled out and realizing that while you’ve lived 1000 years, you’re now in your 20s again and everyone around you is much less mature than you are.
The problem is that, of course, the drugs don’t actually give you 1000 years to improve - it just temporarily ruins your ability to gauge time rather than actually extending it.

Oh, for sure they’d go insane… but, eventually they’d get better. 1000 years is a long time :)
And also in many situations people then return to modern socioeconomic states where their criminal history and social status means they fight to eek out an existence while society looks down on them at every turn
And in this case, for you, the criminal, whatever you’ve done was several lifetimes ago, but got the rest of society it was yesterday, which would make that even worse
Or its just 1000 years in an empty cell and you come out of it irreversably catatonic or just go brain dead like the jaunt.
Except psychoactive substances don’t yield the same results for everyone.
