It’s like an existential crisis, like a threat to our very well-being. Like, of course I’m gonna mention Linux.

This is interesting because I’ve been having conversations about what operating system I recommend for the last 20+ years.

Is your purpose here only to be contrarian about a topic that, judging by your comments on SteamOS, you know nothing about and understand even less? Just say so and we can collectively ignore you.

How likely are you to recommend Arch to a friend or colleague? 1, not likely, to 5, extremely likely.

Honestly? It actually depends on the friend or colleague.

Arch isn’t as bad as it can seem, especially if you find an installer for it. Something that’s more mainstream linux might be better; though. especially if they’re looking for a “it works” kind of thing.

The only time I would’ve recommended Windows was around 2019 when it was clear they were making a lot of developer focused features, it felt like they were trying to win back the market share they’d lost to Macs. But no way would I recommend it now. Even then it was more of a “give it a second look” sort of thing for folks who’d sworn off of it.

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like “every user of thing”.
  • Don’t get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of “peasantry” to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can’t quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.
