It’s all over Lemmy. A huge chunk of content here is about social media. Twitter, Reddit, Threads, Musk, Zuckerberg, the fediverse, Lemmy development, Kevin development.

Those are all decent topics to address, but that’s half my feed on here even after curation.

to be fair you can subscribe/unsubscribe from communities. I often do this. If /c/news is too political, i unsub from /c/news, i can then go and find some other news community that posts interesting things that aren’t as political

similarly, /c/[email protected] is not the only technology community out there, as is obvious, so we can go and find other things :) your feed is yours! own it! don’t wait for others to fix it cuz you’ll very often be dissatisfied.

It seems like the best way is view “all” not just local, and block shit you don’t want to see as you come across.

I’ve gotten rid of most of the meme subs, formula 1, subs for languages I dont speak, or just any topic I don’t care about.

If I see something I’m interested in, I subscribe. Eventually I’ll have enough to just view subscribed, but this way I get to see what s out there

I don’t know how you came up to the idea that all news is about what political parties and the ruling class are doing in their day to day lives :) I do love some news about how putin is screwing up something, but I also want news about new cool apps, new developments in technology or AI, new cool stuff found around the world, new opportunities and things in this cool world. Sometimes, just sometimes, I don’t wanna hear about what insults Trump is hurling at Biden and viceversa.

Twitter video is notoriously shit. Uploading results in unintended trimming of the end and sharing such a video has “mixed success” being shared to other platforms. Also, does he guarantee the same pay out as youtube? his views are significantly worth less than a view on youtube for him. Think he basically counts what youtube counts as an “impression” as a view. That’s huge when most youtubers of Jimmy’s size get a CTR of like 10% … so thats people who click in to view after an impression. So if the followers were the same size and such Jimmy would 10x the ad revenue moving to twitter.

That wreaks of bullshit. Now if you’re being charitable you’d say oh well he probably meant this or that… but thats the problem. Now we have to interpret something that was said with assertive authority. So this is “embarrassing” cause its Elon basically begging for more content on his platform that he can barely serve to his users (limited posts) to try justify a Blue purchase to potentially slow the bleeding. And thats transparently so, but he phrased it like it’d be in Jimmy’s interest which most people are just seeing through.

They don’t have to rip other people off, they just choose to. I had a girlfriend whose family was quite wealthy… she loved shopping at the dollar store, and her mother acted overwhelmed with glee when she found a dozen past-date eggs for .65 at the grocery store. Is that how they became wealthy? Fuck no, they inherited a hotel.

They wouldn’t go there for the videos. The videos would be watched by the people already on twitter and scrolling through trending, then presumably some would follow and watch them in their regular feed. I rarely use twitter but I like the idea of hearing how the payment he’s promising pans out given all of twitter’s unpaid bills lately.

I don’t get why Twitter didn’t try to make a Youtube-like video platform before? I wonder if it’s because venture capital has caused brain rot in the executive teams at these tech companies? It seems obvious to launch something like that, and they 100% have (had) the talent and infrastructure to build and support it. Even if it isn’t massively successful on day one, it could be successful in the future with a strong marketing effort.

If I didn’t know that these companies were run by incompetent idiots, my first suspicion would be some kind of collusion. Trying to do it now that Twitter is a sinking ship is laughable.

They didn’t have anywhere close to the infrastructure to compete with YouTube

Based off earnings from before Twitter was purchased, they were making less money than Snapchat - and Snapchat is having to close down gfycat due to the cost of serving gifs - much less having the main focus be long form videos

That doesn’t really matter, unless you expect the video feature to be unprofitable. With ~300m or whatever active users, it would not be hard to raise money if they need it to launch a major product like that.

There’s 0 chance it would be profitable. They probably could have built it with a lot of external funding, but it would probably never have become profitable

I completely disagree. If anything, Google having difficulties with profitability is an opportunity for a competitor to beat them (although I don’t think youtube is unprofitable).

Can something like this under Twitter management (current or previous) succeed? Probably not. But could a team of smart people with access to 300 million users build a video streaming platform that’s profitable? Hell yes, and the only major concern would be anti-competitive bs from Google, but the FTC has been paying more attention to that kind of stuff recently.

But could a team of smart people with access to 300 million users build a video streaming platform that’s profitable?

How big of a team are we talking about?

                A small team, no.

First there’s compliance with copyright laws to consider, All the false accusations that go along with it. You gonna need some lawyers and support people to handle these issues.

Moderation is significantly more challenging too. It’s significantly harder to detect things like copy right violations, child porn, etc, when it’s in video forma than in text form.

Then you need staff to manage the clients. And by clients I mean the advertisers. So there’s going to have weird demands like “no swearing in the first 15 seconds of the video” or whatever. And so you have to manage the rollout of weird features like that. Which ideally would include tools so the content creators can remain in compliance with the weird demands of the advertisers.

Then there’s the bandwidth considerations. It takes way more resources to serve up video to 300 million users than it is to serve up text.

Sure many times Youtube sucks at these things right but these are things that need to be done and doing them right is going to require a larger staff than YouTube has.

If he just brought over a few really big creators, he wouldn’t need all of YouTube’s infrastructure.

OTOH, even just a tiny fraction of YouTube’s infrastructure is massive compared to what Twitter does with video. It’s like someone suggest that a newspaper start using his home printer instead of their printing presses.

Meh, I’ve got a 4k phone with Dolby atmos. I’m fine watching a movie on it. As a technophile and audiophile, it’s hitting everything it needs to hit for me. I do prefer to watch in my VR headset overall, but VR headsets are still only up to the equivalent of 1080p at a comfortable field of view. Still pretty good, but the main upside for VR is perfect 3D, I’m one of the weirdos that likes 3D.

But, I do get that at the time of this recording, he had a 4-6 inch diagonal phone with a single tinny speaker and 576p screen in mind, and that would indeed not be a great way to watch a movie. Though if people like it, no real reason to be snobby to them about it, they just don’t care about the same thing he does/we do.

I don’t know who would watch a whole 20 minute video on their phone though.

In some countries, a phone as a daily computer for everything is much more popular than actual computers.

My wife will binge watch TV shows on her phone. Ones with epic views like The Expanse. I don’t get it but she’s fine with it.
