Apple is solving issues that Apple had also created

I personally kinda sympathised with their holding onto ports for a while just because I’d heard a number of older apple customers getting rather upset any time ports changed and they needed new adapters and cables, which as a user I can understand. Apple moved to USB-C on their laptops but their iphone customers are larger and less tech savvy, so I always figured there was actually a kernel of just trying to keep their customers happy behind keeping lightning.

No decision made by a Corporation this huge is ever made to make anyone but the shareholders happy.

In many other products USB c was the standard for a lot of years. So most people already have USB c cables. This decision has nothing to do with the customers.

You just proved why it’s a stupid idea to not switch to type C on the iPhone.

Their mac and iPads already switched years ago. Now Apple users needed to carry a second charger just for their iPhone if they wanted to charge it. What a ridiculous thing. They should’ve switched to type C all at once.

Not to mention pretty much every single tech product for nearly the last decade comes with type C. So I’m sure Apple users have a handful of cables already.

Nintendo switch, GoPros, battery banks, Android phones, headphones… pretty much everything.

I think moving to USB-C was the right move, but when I upgrade eventually, I will have to buy a bunch of new cables and power bricks too, so it’s a hidden cost. Admittedly, if you know where to go, that cost is minimal, but it is still there and it is also something I have to prepare for ahead of time. I have, in regular use, 5 cables right now, 3 of them in bricks. All 5 cables and all 3 bricks would need to be replaced.

I admit I could probably do all of that for $20-$30, but it’s still annoying.

Nobody is stopping Apple from adding 2 ports, nobody will be complaining then.

Except Apple, because they can’t peddle their overpriced dongles.

Go have a look at their pricing for dongles and stuff for a computer.

I used to work there and my eyes watered when I told people the price. We had quite bougie customers who would drop over £100 on three cables and marching plugs.

I wouldn’t doubt if Anker and other companies will be selling similar accessories for far less. I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

If you look up pricing information in the US you will find that it’s abusive and often criminal although not illegal.

Keystone pricing is a lame term they used to use now it’s just criminal pricing imo.

No way is a minute piece of plastic worth that much.

Americans get robbed and it’s normal for some reason.

No way, you just don’t get it.

See, this is the only converter tried and tested to work on Apple iPhone 15™, which incorporates the most advanced technology designed by a dozen skilled engineers at Apple, and then manufactured through an industry-defining precision machining process that can assemble this adapter with accuracy down to the nanometer level. In addition, advancements in materials management have made this the most ecologically friendly adapter yet, using 30% fewer PFAS-containing elements and a 50% reduction in energy costs to meet Apple’s 2030 goals. The end result is an adapter that offers no compromises and provides a cutting edge Lightning to USB adaptation experience, now with the USB 2.0 speeds you know and love.

And all of this can be yours for the completely reasonable price of US$29.99 before taxes and fees.

Funnily, while I’m sure they may have hyped the lightning connector, I don’t think I’ve ever seen them hype their dongles or cables.

I think there’s just so many tech illiterate people using apple products that they just de facto buy apple stuff for their apple stuff. No upsell or price justification needed.

This sub sucks. No really, it’s be great if we could actually have conversations about Apple products and decisions instead of it being full of people that just want to dunk on Apple with uninformed and tired takes.

There is a legit way we can talk about the dongle, how it’s existence makes perfect sense, and how there are cheaper/better alternatives on the market. Instead we have “Hur hur hur, Apple expensive, what do you expect? Are you new?”. It’s not intelligent, it’s not right, and it completely ignores so many realities.

Keep in mind this is the same amount their adapters have been forever. They’re almost always in the $19-39 range.

When you think about it, adapters are some of the few inflation-free things Apple has sold.

I just looked, but could only find USB-C to male lightning ports. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an adapter or cable with a female lightning port on the end.

Why would you need a female? Does Apple have devices with cables hardwired to them? Usually they just have ports and the cables are interchangeable.

Yes, some accessories have a hard-wired lightning male end (and therefore need a female adapter). The Apple pencil, those alarm clock speaker docks, some flash drives, etc.

The Apple Pencil has a cable attached to it? Why? The Microsoft Surface Pen just charges by being attached magnetically to the side of the Surface.

None of those devices I listed have a cable attached to it, just a male lightning end as part of the device itself.

The Apple pencil, that came out 8 years ago, charges with a male lightning port at the end (where an eraser might go on a normal pencil). There’s no cable, you’d just insert that end to a lightning supported iPad or iPhone to recharge.

The magnetic charger enabled second generation came out in 2018, but Apple still fully supports the first generation model.

Depends on the protocols used of course. Doubt those will be USB 3.2.

But since the new Iphone only uses USB 2.0 for its base model, it should be more than fine.

Unless those cables are just for charging and not for data, which also exist. But then that should be mentioned on the packaging.

All apple cables and adapters are overpriced. People should just buy new cables. It takes the same amount of time to plug/unplug an adapter and a cable.

This isn’t the reason, but could be a reasonable explanation:

These dongles are only necessary for things like docks to make their fixed connector work with a new device. So apple won’t sell many of them, therefore they have to charge a lot to make up for low volume.

In what world does this make any sense, why not just buy a USB a to C cable? It would function exactly the same as getting an Adapter for the lightning… no? When could this possibly be needed?
