Formatting tip - if you put a backslash “ \ “ before the asterisk, it ignores the normal command to italicize/embolden. The markup commands on Lemmy are similar to those on Reddit (though not identical; Lemmy doesn’t break links as often as Reddit does.)
D’ya know, I did, and I was assuming the convention that asterisks wrapped in non-white space wouldn’t mark-up, and only now that you mentioned it do I see how it rendered. Thanks! I’ll edit
