Why do they keep putting glass on the back of phones?.. why?.. The last thing I want is more breakable/shatterable glass on my phone. I will never understand this. It’s a complete looks over function decision that’s just silly.
Plastic is horrible for the environment, feels cheap, shows fingerprints, and cracks (older iPhones with plastic backs had a problem with this).
The glass used is still glass, but REALLY TOUGH. Just get a case or AppleCare if you’re worried about dropping it……or don’t buy an $800+ phone if you’re prone to dropping them.
I like minimalist cases. You can break the glass through a basic case easily. Have multiple times over the years. If “buy a case” is the solution then what’s the point of it being glass. No one will see it.
I’ve literally never broken the glass on any of my phones ever, and have dropped them tons of times.
Maybe I’m just lucky but I don’t know that it’s as easy to do as you may think it is. Maybe in whatever setting you’re using a phone in, sure. In which case, absolutely a case is the right answer, glass back or no since you seem to be hard on your devices.
The benefits of glass evidently outweigh the one possible drawback of being easier to break. It’s not Apple’s fault you break your phones. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
I see glass backed phones with cracks in them constantly. It’s definitely not just a me thing. But ok. I haven’t bought any of the glass backed gen for a reason. You people who buy every new version have fun with it.
Hey man, we don’t know each other and shouldn’t get upset over a phone. Most people upgrade every 1-2 years and/or slap a case on their phones, so as you stated it doesn’t really matter what material the back is made of, since even if it cracks most people won’t have to look at it and their phone will probably work just fine anyway.
Apple has for a very long time now prioritized materials that are highly recyclable, feel good in the hand and look good. Traditionally, that’s glass and metal. That’s what you get with iPhones, and it hasn’t changed since they were first introduced with glass backs in 2017.
I didn’t say cracking your phone is a you thing, just that you seem by your own admission to crack phones a lot. If that’s true, then you should consider a case regardless of the phone you get or what material it’s made of.

Thats why I tend to avoid posting anymore and just lurk. I agree with you about the glass back and I’ve replace my phone every year. But I sell off the phones the moment I have a new phone and I feel that its worth every dollar as well.
I also see alot of people are happy about the usb c change but I dread over it. Honestly, lightning cable is superior. Why? I prefer the cable being fucked, than the port being fucked. But hey, everyone is happy about usbc and ill just let it be. I have my magsafe anyway.
My s22 has a glass back and I really like it. It feels nice, it looks nice, and although mine does have a small crack it doesn’t affect the function of the phone in any way so its no big deal.
Part of it is also wireless charging I think. A metal back would interfere with that afaik and plastic feels too cheap for a lot of people these days, especially with how expensive phones are getting

It doesn’t have to feel cheap and show fingerprints. I love the plastic on the back of my S21, it feels very premium and looks great

My S21 has a high quality plastic back and I LOVE it. Would have never guessed I would have before getting it
The short answer is reception and the long answer is above my level of understanding.

I wouldn’t mind a metal back with a circle of glass for charging, but that is a very un-apple aesthetic.
