the place I just moved into has a nice outdoor area and came with a (pretty busted but functional) propane grill. we’re thinking of replacing it but maybe it’s worth considering charcoal?

If you plan to grill frequently you’ll probably get tired of the charcoal grill very quickly. It’s great, but takes a shit ton of time in comparison and gets sooty smoke all over you so you’ll need to put on like a specific grilling outfit and then shower after so you don’t stink up your bed. My partner and I went from charcoal to propane last year and now we grill like 4 times a week for dinner because it’s as easy as turning on the stove. So yeah, if you want to grill the best steak possible once a month or so charcoal will work great. If you want to treat the grill as just another kitchen appliance to cook routine meals go with the gas.
My dad used his charcoal grill more than the stove (and was the only one to cook)
Of course, he made the kids prep and clean the thing. It’s really not so bad.
But I definitely smelled of mesquite smoke a lot
