How’s it holding up?
Red Wings work boots. The quality has admittedly gone down a lot in the past decade but it’s still leaps and bounds better than any other off-the-shelf work boot. Saving up for a pair made by a PNW bootmaker, but my 4 year old 877s keep going
What bootmaker?
There are a few. Will probably go with Nick’s Boots as my next pair. The quality to price ratio seems just right for my use
Shark Navigator Vacuum with a self-cleaning brush. I bought it on Sunday and it’s working great so far

I bought a box of bamboo toilet paper almost a year ago and I still haven’t run out. It was only a 24 pack.
A 24 pack of toilet paper was your buy it for life item?
No I’ve been recycling it, only had to toss one roll due to over use.
I googled bamboo TP and it looks very similar to paper TP, as in not reusable. What am I missing here?
Just like normal TP recycling, it just lasts longer.
I’m so confused. Is this a joke or is that a real thing?
Just stick in in a blender with some hot water to kill off the germs, blend it up and let it dry out in the sun.
I’m still only 85% sure you are joking because people are weird. Top tier trolling my friend. Nice work.
Lol thank you but really though, the bamboo toilet paper lasts a lot longer than normal toilet paper. No I don’t recycle it but going through 4 rolls a month to 1.5 - 2 rolls a month is a big time and money saver and I will be buying it again. Reels if you’re interested
So you plan to never buy any more toilet paper ever?
No just recycle it
Some of my BIFL:
I seem to lose Swiss Army Knives before they wear out or break. On my 3rd or 4th one now and trying to hang on to it.
I still have my Atari 2600 from when I was a kid. And many more cartridges than I had before. The CRT I played it on still works too.
Various tools like vice grips, hammers, corded drills, table saw, and circular saw.
Bare and enameled cast iron pots and pans.
Several tents. The oldest one is a Coleman Oasis canvas tent I used growing up. HUGE tent - 12’ at the peak and about 12’x12’.
I don’t plan to keep it for life, but I have a wallet from the Buffalo Billfold Company. Bison and very durable. I think mine is the hipster.
Bought a 9 dollar cast iron from Walmart for a camping trip and I love it. I’m hoping it outlives me and it should with proper care. It’s already been 4 years
A Riccar vacuum. It’s only been about five years but so far so good.
Fountain pens. They hold up incredibly well, but…
…Then again, I keep buying them, and inks, and etc., so I’m not sure it qualifies as BIFL.
Oh, that’s a good point! I’ve had the same mechanical pencil for the past four years.
I’ve got some mechanical pencils from 8 years ago.
Granted I hardly use them now, but they served me well as daily drivers for the first 5. They’re the shaker kind too!
I still have the same mechanical pencil I bought over in Germany during a student exchange in 1988. Absolutely bulletproof, and - as typical - I didn’t see it’s thumb-click design (lead advancer right behind the tip, where the thumb usually sits when writing) being sold in North America until about 10-15 years later.
Favourite pen under $100?
I still have the same TV I got as a kid in the late 80s! It works great except it has a line at the bottom of the screen but that goes away within about 5 minutes of powering it on. I hooked it up to a Roku and use it to watch old TV shows lol
I’d love to do this. I watch Cheers, Seinfeld, and Frasier religiously as background noise.
It’s super easy! I just got this HDMI to coax adapter on Amazon!
Dang, that’s perfect .
Heres a picture of it! The picture is much better looking in person, the camera makes the screen look like that
This would be so cool to build into a mame cabinet
Bought my 1st watch in '85, simple analog/digital display commodore and it still works.
Not something I bought a long time ago but I want to share the idea, I have now got myself One Single Ballpen. I was moving and saw that I’d got way too many ballpens that were not even used and that I would not use at all that were just offered or I don’t even know how I got them. So I bought myself a metal ballpen with some recharges, and well in one year i’ve not even finished the first recharge, and i’ve basically only written with this pen and signed with this pen
What pen did you buy?
I got a Rotring 600 and it’s holding well for me!
Get you a Schmidt easy flow refill for that thing. Smooth as butter.
Schmidt
I got some Schmidt EasyFlow 9000 recharges they are in my bag, but I haven’t even finished the first Rotring charge which is already quite smooth, my SO was chocked when she borrowed it. Kind of impatiently waiting to have no ink left to try those Schmidt’s!
If you got them off Amazon be prepared for the occasional dud. The good ones are noticeably smoother than what comes with the Rotring.
Thats a quality pen.
Yeah, I mostly took it because it felt in hand and looked resistant. It’s almost all the time in my jacket pocket so some would say I’m not perfectly taking care of it and a but of the blue “paint” has been wearing a bit of on the handle part
The only right answer is Uniball Jetstream, probably 0.7mm. Buy the multi-pen and a bunch of refills and you’re good to go.
Jetpens.Com is a nice site.
A burial plot, and we’ll see.
Seems to me you bought it for death, actually
I bought one to last the rest of my life and the rest of my death. It’s a 2 for.
Burial plots don’t last forever. You may only get to use it for something as short as 40 years before they shift you out for a new occupant, depending on demand and upkeep and whatever was agreed on beforehand.
Wait what, what do they do with the bodies?
They get placed in an https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ossuary or respectfully disposed of somehow…
Japanese made Makita half inch router my dad bought in 1976
My guns
My N64 Got it in 99 and it still works
Safety razor. Bought one for 30 EUR over a decade ago, and it’s showing no signs of wear. Razor blades are cheap too. I have no clue why razors with proprietary blades are so popular nowadays.
It’s not a secret. Disposable razors are simple to own and use
Safety razors are really not any harder to use. The real answer is cartridge razors are what are marketed, and they are what are marketed because they make more money.
Not sure how to link a Lemmy instance, but this link should hopefully work: https://sub.wetshaving.social/c/wetshaving
Hi there! Looks like you linked to a Lemmy community using a URL instead of its name, which doesn’t work well for people on different instances. Try fixing it like this: [email protected]
Good bot
If I’m not wrong it would be [email protected]
Same here, bought a luxury safety razor for €79 with 50 blades. Alas, it’s adjustable and that mechanic failed. Got a gilette version from the 60s and that’s stoll fully functional, but the new one (qshave) is heavier and nicer to use. Bought a 20 pack of 10pc feather blades with it as well, 14 packs left. (280 weeks of shaving)
The type of razor is working out greatly, I just need to find a way to repair the qshave unit.
This is a tangent, but I agree that Feather blades are the best.
I think Feather is definitely one of the best, from what I’ve heard; I’ve also heard…maybe it’s too friggin sharp. I do not know from personal experience!!
I’ve been using Shark blades instead, they’re very available & super cheap. You can get 100 Shark DE razor blades for $10, 11 & free shipping.
Do what you want, I do not care, it’s all so cheap & available imho we can’t really make a “wrong” choice. Feather, Shark, all good. 🤙🏻 Sometime soon I’ll get on that wet shaving sub & talk about good safety razors…I, too, have vintage Gillette (Fatboy Slim) & German brand Merkur. Hell might cross-post the Merkur into BIFL.
Feather are awesome, I never could get the same shave with any of the others I tried.
I have no clue why razors with proprietary blades are so popular nowadays.
Advertising.
I bought a safety razor 15y ago along with a decent supply of Feather blades. I thought those would last me for a few years but I’m still working my way through them.
Inherited mine from my grandfather, so about 70 years old and still in great condition. Simplicity lasts! Spent E 17,50 to shave 5 years 👌
