I can’t be the only one who thought Prey wasn’t that great.
I thought it was entirely fine and enjoyable as a popcorn, action movie. But other than that I don’t really understand why it deserves any awards.
Also what is the distinction between “movie” and “television movie”? That line seems pretty blurred in a world of streaming.

The studios pay their employees less on streaming contracts even though that’s basically what TV is nowadays. They make sure to distinguish the content because they want to keep paying low wages to the cast and crew of streaming contracts. They define streaming as “new media”, which is a joke to anyone paying attention.
I liked it because it was a relatively well executed version of a concept that we don’t see that often. Not many live action movies have stories from a Native American point of view and that felt fresh to me. Just as a general action movie it wasn’t groundbreaking, but there was enough newness to keep me enjoying it, and it was still a Predator movie which gives a sense of familiarity that was comforting. If it takes giving awards to less-than-groundbreaking movies to get more movies with Native casts greenlit, then I’m for it but I could see how not everyone cares about that type of thing.
I have a number of Indigenous colleagues who were thrilled to see Indigenous characters and perspectives on the screen (see also: Rez Dogs, which hits so many tropes so well). As someone who finally saw their own culture reflected when My Big Fat Greek Wedding came out, the way my heart glowed was memorable, and I hope as many people as possible get to see their own cultures in the same way. I was a bit sad that the Cherokee version was a dub instead of the actors speaking it themselves but loss of language is one of the many shameful legacies of colonization. (In that vein I really liked what Brøn/Brœn did with Danish/Swedish characters speaking to each other in their own languages, and reminds me of English/French Canadian productions like Bon Cop/Bad Cop where they move between languages seamlessly)

Yeah, this is a lame take.
If anything, especially in the modern movie industry, I see bigotry of high expectations.
Movies with good representation seem to be held to a higher standard, expected to compete with the best of the best in whatever genre the movie lives in.
These are early attempts by underrepresented groups to tell their stories. They should not be exempt from criticism, but I think it’s very reasonable to cut them a bit of a break and be glad they exist at all. Quality always improves with time, practice, and more opportunity.
