so I have some friends who are interested in calckey, they came from bsky and were upset by the anti blackness on that site. I was wondering if anyone knew of a decent black owned instance, or if not an instance that is has many black moderators.

I’m not sure about if the owners are black or the mods are black but I’m pretty sure that https://blahaj.zone/ is a welcoming place for queer folks so I’m pretty sure they’d be welcoming to other marginalized groups as well.
But as the other commenter said, worst case scenario you and you buds spin up an instance for yourselves and federate it.
No disrespect to the blahaj admins at all (I’m on lemmy.blahaj.zone rigth now!) but safe spaces for queer folks aren’t automatically safe spaces for non-white folks and there’s a lot of historical pain and drama about that on the fediverse
No worries, there’s a lot of historical pain and drama about that in a lot more places than the fediverse.
I just kind of look at it this way, new bridges only stop being built when people stop trying to build new ones.

I feel like this could sadly be said about pretty much all fedi devs, like every single one. I feel like if you want something controversy free you will have to 100% re-write it from the ground up. Mastodon is highly problematic, Misskey is also problematic. and let’s not get started on soapbox, and plemora. I will likely just use whatever fork blahaj.zone is using, (it is a fork of calckey though rumor is they are moving to another fork)
Does it have to be calckey specifically? If not, ubiqueros is misskey and rage.love is hometown. Blacktwitter.io is running normal Mastodon I think. Fediverse party lists neovibe.app (Mastodon) as Black-run. Weirder.earth (Hometown) has strong antiracist moderation but I don’t know the composition of the mod team offhand
I remember seeing a recently formed Black queer instance being posted about but I don’t remember the name, and of course because it’s Mastodon there’s not really a way to search for it 🙄 but I’ll see if I can find it edit got it: blackqueer.life, running Mastodon.
I might recommend those too, the reason I was looking for Calckey specifically is it has many of the features bsky has, like custom feeds vis antennas and such. Calckey also seems to have a less clunky UI and quote posting
Misskey will have all of those features. Calckey has quite a few QoL improvements over Misskey, but the core features are the same.
I don’t have an answer for you, but maybe you and your friends could get together and start your own? The beauty of the fediverse and all that.

There’s a black owned Calckey instance but it doesn’t federate iirc. I can’t for the life of me remember the name, I think it was @[email protected] who mentioned it, you might wanna reach out to him.
