Anyone have any clue what the fuck PTV were thinking when they added the “stand clear” voice. There’s a tone for stop buttons, we don’t need a voice to tell us it’s stopping. We can see the doors opening, we don’t need a voice to tell us that they are and to stand clear. The doors always close immediately after opening, so we sure as hell don’t need a voice repeating that the doors are closing. We don’t need a tone to emphasise this point. Especially when the bus is stopping every. Fucking. Stop. Anyway.
Yeah, been on PT for an hour and a half for a trip that should’ve been an hour, and that voice has played every time. I have a headache. Fuck PTV.
Imported from HK’s MTR which owns 60% of metro trains? It’s done in three languages there too. Now if only they could import the train frequency and low fares too…
What about people who are blind or have low vision?
That’s a damn good point that hadn’t occured to me, and that definitely speaks to the privilege of being (mostly) able-bodied. That said though, wouldn’t a hearing loop or similar achieve the same purpose without the headache?
A pair noise cancelling headphones would have an even better effect, and only one person needs to use them in this scenario.
Edit: Sorry I’m still quite surprised you’d expect blind people to wear a hearing aid?
…I’m very clearly completely asleep and not doing brainthink, appreciate your pointing that out. You’re right about noise-cancelling earphones, although cost is always an issue, but yeah

Time to turn the tables. I want to eat the brains of a zombie
🧠
Not very good to be honest.
That’s why they are after living people’s brains, their own are no good.
Yeah… my spinach seedlings are damping off. It took a while for them to get going and then forgetting to drain the self watering reservoirs during those heavy rains has wrecked them.
The carrots might be ok and the cat grass/parsley are doing well but more of the spinach is just dying. I might have to trash them and try again with new potting mix after bleaching the pot
I could never get spinach to do anything either , I think they need a very free draining sandy soil and I just used ordinary potting mix 🤷♀️
My previous ones did ok in a cheap window box of potting mix.
I just made the same mistake here as the tomatoes, of overcompensating with self watering reservoirs in case I forgot to water. Ended up killing the plants with wet feet
same, I over watered
check out perpetual spinach if you can - it’s technically a chard (like silverbeet) but it’s bloody hard to kill and won’t bolt in hot weather
I actually have a packet of those seeds too, I went with spinach because I thought more iron but honestly the perpetual would hold up better.
Especially since I now know keeping it inside on a sill to protect is during heat isn’t enough light
I’m feeling weird because I bought a $65k car today and it feels like it should be more of a big deal or something but it’s also kinda not a big deal. I think it might just be weird nerves for dropping that much cash so suddenly but I’m sure I’ve made a good choice. Between the US trip, PC monitor, new years cruise and the new car I’ve been spending big in the 2nd half of this year. Is this a mid-life crisis or realisation that you have to enjoy life while you can? I did turn 40 a few months before all of this spending.
I think part of our brains are devoted to very simplistic pattern learning, and it does not respond well to nuance or change. So while you are not spending it is learning concepts like “bank balance go up = good, bank balance go down = bad”. It completely misses the entire point of why you put money aside, so when you spend it that simple brain becomes a bit alarmed. It makes a useful warning system to double check with your rational brain if you are doing the right thing, but it can be tricky to disarm when it is giving a false alarm.
You’re pretty much Oprah rn.
‘You get a car, and you get a cruise, you get a monitor’.
Ok, lovers of cheesy horror get on Tubi for Sister Wrath.
Sexy Nuns with uzis.
And many, many awful tropes, so very not PC warning I guess
As I do every now and then I’m stuck watching Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown and feeling sad
Ok onto the Jerusalem episode which goes into Palestine and Israel stuff… interesting with today’s goings on
I’m getting logged out using safari to browse from time to time. But then I refresh and magically logged back in. I don’t remember my password and the reset link never works. It’s stressful.
Anyway, today was a good day. WFH but not crazy, got time in the sun, fresh cut and now sushi train for dinner. Dreaming of going back to Japan. Or any holiday really.
Today is first day of almost two weeks off! Weather was beautiful and I spent all but 5 mins indoors. Off to a great start
I’m about to head out and test drive that Subaru. Apparently it only has about 200km on the clock so if I love it I might just pull the trigger quickly. It’d be like buying a new car without having to wait months for it.
If anybody has any tips for haggling/dealing with buying a new/demo car please shout them out. I haven’t bought one since 2010 so I’m a bit rusty.
Love a Subaru. Had to sell mine to unfuck the Mrs car problems, and it was the sadest day of my life. What model did you look at?
Just about everyone I’ve spoken to or have seen online who has had a Subaru seems to rave about them. It definitely helped make the decision to pull the trigger. It’s the Outback Touring XT 50 Years Edition, so Touring features/insides with the Sport outsides.
I bought my car in 2006, so I’m even rustier. (Rusty by name, rusty by nature…)
I bought a new Subaru, and my car buying technique was to research what I wanted online, including getting a quote from a broker. Walked into the dealership, said “I want one of those” and got a price. Got offered a discount plus accessories for a car built in the last year (which apparently makes a difference to people) which would save me a few thousand so took that. Agreed for them to give me a quote for finance and was surprised when it was a better deal than the pre-approval I had already arranged, so went with that too. Car arrived a few weeks later and I still have it.
Basically, I did everything they say you should not do and it worked out really well. 🤣
Realistically I think the best thing is to make sure you know what price range you think is reasonable in advance and what features/problems actually matter to you. Then disregard everything else the salesperson says to try and sway or distract you. Trying to focus on tricks and techniques for haggling tend to just be a distraction to you. Know what you want and ask for it. Know what you will accept if you can’t get best case, and be prepared to walk away if you can’t get it.
It’s done. I bought it lol
I pretty much followed what you said here. I had an idea of what the car was worth, what promotions were available (2 years free servicing) and a rough figure on a trade-in for my car. They came in low on my trade-in figure so I managed to bump them up a couple of grand to where I was happy to settle. Otherwise there are things I would have had to do to the car to get it ready to sell privately and then the fees for selling privately etc… it wasn’t worth the hassle.
I pick it up early next week! Wooo new car summer!

Shit… I forgot to apply for that energy compare subsidy and probably have missed the cutoff.
Trying to be kind to myself because things suck right now and it’s full survival mode but I really wish I hadn’t been so distracted. Small savings don’t go too far when you miss big ones. And I used to be so organised.
Edit: Yes. The cutoff date was 31st August and I forgot to write it down. FUCK. I seriously need to set a calendar reminder for the next one
Ok it’s in the digital calendar now and set to repeat yearly 😤
@[email protected] I wrote out a long reply to your question about tomatoes yesterday and my app crashed before I posted it and I lost it all. I will try again today.
Good soil is the most important starting point - it should have good drainage and lots of organic matter. Digging in lots of compost fixes most faults (I like the cheap “cow manure blend” that bunnings sells - not a high level of nutrients so you can use lots to build up soil structure).
Don’t use high nitrogen fertilizer (there is usually an N:P:K number on the packet, look for ones where the first (N) number is lowest relative to the others. Nigrogen encourages lot of leaves and will give you a great looking plant, but not much fruit.
Tomato plants can grow new roots from the stems, so plant them deeply, burying the stem and leaving just the leaves out.
Use lots of mulch (5-10cm deep) to keep the soil moist over summer. In the hottest weather your plants will also benefit from some shade - just some shade cloth draped over some garden stakes should be fine, you don’t need to build a greenhouse.
The plants will need support to stop them flopping all over the ground. You could spend a small fortune on fancy tomato cages, but my preferred method is the Florida weave. Simple and very effective.
Disregard anything you see about pruning - you don’t need the extra complexity right now, and there is no expert agreement about whether it is beneficial or not (but many strong opinions on both sides).
add to this: Calcium. Helps prevent blossom end rot. Definitely get a shading up, this summer is gonna scald the fuck out of the fruit.
thank you!! (twice)
Gonna give it (not killing them) a red hot go.
Anyone here have experience with hearing protection in a noisy work environment? As in machine noise? Any brands that are better (or the best) to look out for? Price is not really a factor here - I’d like to pay for quality in this instance.
Hearing protection has classifications for noise reduction levels, with class 5 being the highest. So anything in each category will give the same noise reduction performance. After that, it’s just individual choice what you find more comfortable, earplugs or earmuffs. If using earplugs, they need to be inserted properly to be effective, earmuffs are less fussy. However, if it is a workplace, employer should be providing appropriate noise controls and hearing protection. If you have concerns you can look up the worksafe website to know what the requirements are.
Ooh thanks. I’ll look up class 5 and choose something stylish. Thanks baunch!
I have a lot of experience in extreme noise environments. For your situation you’re better off just buying rubber earplugs on a cord that you can attach to your shirt so you don’t lose them. If additional protection is required just chuck some inexpensive low profile earmuffs on over that. Unless you’re in a tactical environment, you don’t really need expensive noise cancelling earmuff because you end up trashing them.
Can’t go wrong with the Sony mx-1000 range. Over ears are brilliant and long term comfortable, 10 minute charge gives you 5 hours continuous use. If your work environment requires AS over ear protection, then look at the ear bud version of the same, and wear them under your peltors.
Are they primarily for listening to music while also blocking out noise? I’m looking into them and thanks for the suggestion but just to be clear, I only really need the noise cancelling aspect / hearing protection aspect. Unless these have some additional benefit over a non-chargable set of earmuffs I’m not seeing?
[edit] oh, and the noise will be intermittent, if that helps. Like, one blast of noise every 15-30 seconds or so. Like hummm BZZT hummm BZZT, etc.
Are they primarily for listening to music while also blocking out noise
I mean yeah. I’ve also used just the noise cancellation for sleep in different environments, whilst whippersnipping etc. I’m referring to the over ears version here. I think as long as there’s a Bluetooth connection active the noise cancellation will stay working until the battery dies. If the Bluetooth connection drops, the headphones turn themselves off by default after a while. There’s a sony app that lets you change that though.
