I turned off telemetry and “privacy preserving analytics” but saw the URL below in my DNS logs. Does anybody know what it is? I found this repo but don’t know what it means.

Brave does crypto… Need I say more?

And now for the obvious follow-up question: if you turn off analytics, including the so-called “privacy preserving analytics,” what’s it calling an analytics service for?!
Either this is user error, or Brave is having yet another “oopsie” that’s a little too convenient to be chocked up to accident

No, I am on the stable version of Brave.
FWIW by default Brave not only pulls custom background images, but also paid background images.
But the URL doesn’t suggest they’re sending you those, it looks more like they’re receiving data from you…

Just warning, Brave is sort of a touchy subject here on Lemmy
I get it. My privacy settings explicitly say do not send telemetry, analytics or whatever else you want to call it. But they ignore my request and try to capture the data anyway. Dunno why they call themselves a privacy focused browser. I already uninstalled it and put in the Mullvad browser.
Like [email protected] said, are you using the nightly version of Brave’s browser? If so, you might have pre-consented to giving them analytic data, apparently?
And if not, well…
I’m using the stable version of Brave. Not nightly or Beta.
