I’ve just removed a post that had c*&t in the title. I’m not going to get into specific rules, but I don’t want that language in post titles. In comments etc in context, fine. But post titles are displayed to all users without the possibility of being filtered.

Please think of others when posting.

I will wager that there are a bunch of Aussie Lemmy and kbin instances.

checks for ones with open signups

      https://lemmy.perthchat.org

      https://lemmyngton.au

      https://lemmy.buzz

There’s probably room in Australia for both an instance with and an instance without “cunt” in titles. In fact, with the existing instances and this one, one has a sufficient number of instances to cover all permutations of policy on each of at least three profane words being permitted in titles.

I’d encourage everyone to register on multiple instances and find one that feels right for them. If you don’t feel at home in a place that doesn’t allow the liberal uttering of “cunt” without warning, you’ll be better served elsewhere.

On the off change you’re not joking… I believe it is unAustralian to be deliberately offensive and rude… which I consider out of context swearing (such as this) to be.

While Australia as a culture has a much higher threshold for swearing than most, and certainly the prudish Americans, I suppose federation means people will see the titles of Aussie.zone threads in their feeds so your decision makes sense.

At the same time I’d hate to see us get all uptight about swearing in routine discussions.

In summary: Swearing in titles: fuck no. Swearing in comments: fuck yes! :)

        That’s what I meant.

Which swear word sets the benchmark of not in title?

F-word = no Shit = ? Arse? Dick is yes as you have it in the sidebar for the rules?

F/C no, the rest I’m ok with. I don’t want to define everything explicitly.

It’s a slippery slope. Most of the communities don’t have rules with the sidebar issue we talked about. If you don’t define it, then it’s as if it doesn’t exist. New future members won’t see this post.

I’ve added this rule to the one sidebar I can edit:

            • Make post titles descriptive with no swear words. Comments are a free for all using the above rules as a guide.

I second this. Be pedantic and specific. I’m still pretty new here and would like to know what’s acceptable before upsetting people. Let it be known though, that I’m still not used to the multitudes of different frameworks in different instances and the apps that access them that are popping up, so even if it’s in sidebar, there’s a very good chance I won’t see it because I’m absolutely never sure what instance or community/magazine/sub-instance I’m posting to or used to think about about it yet at all - it’s just: read, respond, repeat.

I want to be appropriate and follow rules, but I think a lot of this stuff is gonna have to be tested organically and it’s better to have it written out explicitly beforehand. Don’t assume anything is intuitive or common knowledge.

                Nice thoughtful post. I like.

Sidebars are common though, it’s important to read them as that’s where the rules usually are placed, or other relevant information to the community you are viewing.

The apps hide them, the PWA has it front and center, desktop are automatically exposed. Just a habit people need to get into. As moderators switch on, they should become personalised here as well.

I was hoping Lemmy was going to attempt to go back to the heyday of reddit, thoughtful discussion, but looking at ‘All’ and it’s back to meme and low effort stuff. In this case, discussion instances/communities will need to be formed so as more users appear, it should all sort itself out.

Yeah sidebars on Reddit were located in a dropdown menu, too, at least in baconreader, what I used. Rip <3 baconreader

On the topic of low quality memes vs discussion posts and whether or not there should be specific sub-instances (sub-in’s? Subbins? Subbin? Sub? Iunno…), I’m a strong proponent of letting it all do organically. I think having low effort stuff is fine, and people that want more discussion will find that too. I like both and all, call me pan-content’ist (no, I didn’t cringe, you cringed). Should definitely appropriate the rainbow flag to show everybody’s welcome, and not at all just to piss off bigots and nazis which can all suck it and stay mad.

Not everyone has a Grandmother. I never met mine, I’m not sure if she would drop the c-bomb. It’s a fairly common word these days.

And if you’re in a lower socioeconomic area, I would think that word would be perfectly acceptable in front of a 30 year old grandmother.

                I saw 2 4 year olds at daycare dropping f’ing c’s.

How do posts marked NSFW work? Would it not make sense to require those with swear words or adult content to be marked NSFW. Those that don’t wish to see would have it filtered, but it doesn’t restrict the freedom of speech of others. Sometimes expletives are appropriate.

I think situations where that is the case, civil and respectful discussions do not occur

They’re not mutually exclusive, but I would guess there is a trend towards incivility with increased expletives.

However, there is also a use case for venting, for comedy and for absolute dog cunts, being appropriately named.
