Societies that have adopted religion at a young age have consistently out-competed societies that did not adopt religion, therefore that means religion is massively beneficial to human society.

Religious assholes has never allowed an atheist society to survive. Abrahamic religions were spread by the Sword, if you recall.

This is not true religion spread because of a lack of understanding in nature what was once seen as God is now explained in science the more we understand the less religion is needed

I wouldn’t call Christianity’s genocidal behavior to be a net benefit to humanity.

We have no idea how many Galilieo’s, Newton’s, or Einstein’s they have killed.

The fact that religion is beneficial in some ways does not meant that other ways are not more beneficial. If we spend the same amount of time building community and teaching moral philosophy that we spend on religious indoctrination, I predict that we’d see larger benefits and fewer negative side effects.

      …Especially because religion is nonsense.

What the hell is the “age of reason”? Does he think that people hit a certain age and suddenly become reasonable people?

Reason is taught, just like religion. The difference is that if you teach reason, the kid can make their own mind up about religion. If you teach religion, they can’t make their own mind up about anything.

Kinda yes, mostly no. 8-ish is the age where kids start developing some sense of morality past “this is bad because I get punished when I do it”. I don’t know where JS Jr. got this particular piece of doctrine from, but much like everything else, I’m certain he stole it.

Neuroscience tells us that somewhere in our early 20s is when we really finish our moral development. Which, again, is why there’s a push to get kids out on missions the second they’re 18 (used to be 19); that reinforces all the garbage they’ve been taught up to that point.

And yet now we have U.S. states giving school vouchers where taxpayer money goes to pay for tuition for religious private schools. And, at least in Arizona where they are making this universal, those schools do not have to pass any standardized tests or be accountable academically for students in any way. It’s insane.

My favorite was televangelist shows being rated ‘G’ on tv. WTF? Plop your kid in front of the tube and let us indoctrinate them.

Religion is a narrative. Understanding others narratives are possible, religion become obsolete and individuals can position themselves according best possible narrative (Kant, somehow. But if you like some drama, we can pretend this was from Emanuel).
