I absolutely love the game. I’m going to watch this movie with very low expectations and I think I’ll be happy.
So, this is what a 2 year delay worth of studio interference, poor audience testing, and aimlessly hopeful reshoots gets us. The only thing surprising is that it’s not a WB product about to be shelved.
Is it bad that I’m scared/worried to watch the trailer based on the comments I’m this thread alone?
As a fan of the games, and having watched the trailer: no.
I watched it. I wish I hadn’t. But now I definitely know I’m not going to watch this until it hits a streaming service that I’m subbed to. Maybe.
Couldn’t make it through the trailer. I loved the first 3 (1, PS, 2). BL3 was shit and Gearbox got more and more shitty. Not something I’m going to watch.
This is what happens when someone who has never played Borderlands derives their script from watching teen streamers playing the game. Expectedly awful.
Is Borderlands the godfather now? Who cares? Borderlands story is trash, it’s characters are one dimensional. This is like when people complained that they’d mess up twisted metal, as if we were speaking about an adaptation of the old man and the sea. It’s Borderlands, and if the movie is a solid 7, it’s as good as the game.
I don’t think anyone here is saying the movie will be bad for not getting the Borderlands story right. I think they’re saying it looks bad because it looks like a passionless by the numbers cash grab banking on nerd pandering and brand recognition. Especially because this was the type of game that never needed to be made into a movie. I mean, the trailer has Kevin Hart yelling stuff and ends with a diarrhea joke. Nuff said.
Borderlands story is not trash and its characters are not one dimensional. They are caricature in nature and can seem shallow at first glance. The story takes it queues from tales of old while also being extremely puerile and silly but at times it’s also heartfelt and charming (Tiny Tina’s Adventure). What we see here in the trailer is, again, gaming translated to the screen by people who clearly haven’t played the games themselves.
Never having played Borderlands… is the game actually this unapologetically stupid? I chuckled at a few bits in the trailer, but I felt bad for doing it.
It is definitely a stupid game, but this feels a lot like it fan fiction written by someone’s nephew.
Implying bl3 wasn’t already exactly this lol

The humor in the games is definitely “stupid” but not as cringe as this movie looks.
No, it’s exactly as cringe as this movie looks. There’s a horse called Butt-Stallion in the games.
Yeah but in context it’s actually pretty hilarious. Handsome Jack’s monologues made borderlands 2 for me. Such a great villain.
Borderlands 1 is stupid and fun, Borderlands 2 is stupid and fun with more flamboyant characters, Borderlands The Pre-Sequel is like Borderlands 2 but Australian and shorter, Borderlands 3 is too stupid and annoying to be much fun with a shitload of influence humor in it.
I will gladly recommend playing B1 and B2, and if you want more B2 get TPS.
B3 is just annoying.
B2 is my favourite in the series
2 also has the best
villianhero of any game ever, Handsome Jack.spot on.
Yes. Humour is dumb. Some jokes work, some jokes don’t. Not everyone agrees on which ones are funny.
I’d watch it.
I’m not even all that familiar with the games, but the casting seems really off.
That was a lot of explosions.
That, at least, is on-brand for Borderlands.
The lack of overly vulgar dialogue in the trailer really solidified my lack of expectations. Not that I really need that level of vulgarity to enjoy a movie but I mean, is it really borderland without it?
I mean isn’t it basically a really violent PG-13 movie? Like the most they say is shit or asshole, and Mr. Torgue literally has a censor surgically installed into him so he can’t say fuck.
Weird casting, none of them make sense except Jack Black.
Even Jack Black as claptrap is just really bizarre casting. I will definitely not get over kevin hart’s casting though. They hired a short comedian to play the role of the serious military guy character.
Hart’s been apparently trying to shake off the comedian persona.
Then he should stop being in comedies.
And start being a good actor.
Not a single human in existence looks like the characters in Borderlands. This whole thing is silly, Borderlands isn’t a masterpiece of story and character development
It really looks like they wanted this made in the vein of a Guardians of the Galaxy movie. I guess if you start with Borderlands and try to come up with an existing movie property that’s in the same ballpark, that kinda seems like a reasonable target?
Problem is, none of the actors look like they are having fun. I think this is going to land somewhere between the Suicide Squads, and not closer to the one you’d want it to.
I’ll watch it, but as a borderlands fan I’m expecting trash
Same. I can’t imagine it being anything other than off-brand Mad Max, though
I have been equally pessimistic and excited about this dumpster fire from the earliest rumors. I think this movie will be bad, and won’t be any less fun for it. as long as they answer one question best asked by mister torgue flexington: explosions?
oh if they have someone playing Torgue I’ll watch it with mouth agape. I don’t know who could pull it off though.
DID I HEAR SOMEONE ASK #$@!NG EXPLOSIONS?!? THAT IS THE ANSWER. THE QUESTION IS ¥π&@ING WHEN?!?*
Who would they even get to play Torgue? Like honestly? Because from the main casting choices, it would probably be someone like Kyle Gass or Michael Cera.
I really hope I am proved wrong, but this looks like another Video Game to Movie flop.
Looks like it’ll be a fun popcorn movie. Not expecting it to be faithful to the source material.
Just counting my lucky stars they didn’t cast The Rock as Kreig.
