I say this as someone who is probably one of the biggest supporters of software-freedom around here, but bullying or shaming people for preferring non-free apps does nothing but incite resentment towards the movement. I value the four freedoms because I think I deserve control of my computing, not because I think it’s my place to dictate what others should value.
I used Sync for almost the full 11 years on Reddit and will gladly support the dev on Lemmy.

Anyone can choose to install whatever software they choose on their device, but the “free” in free software specifically refers to the freedom to read and modify the source code.
Under the philosophy of the FOSS movement, all proprietary software are by definition unethical.
Since Lemmy and the larger fediverse is the choice for many free software advocates, it’s natural that you see this kind of backlash when fundamentally unethical software to interact with it is released.

Right, but sync isn’t even free in that regard. It serves you ads, tracks you, and is closed source. I’d happily financially contribute to it if it were actually FOSS

I bought Sync Pro for Reddit, and I’ll do the same for Lemmy. Open-source can suck a butt, I’m willing to pay for a well made app

To be clear, I am not talking shit on open source software, the “open source can go suck a butt” comment was in reference to taking the time to get used to a new app when I don’t have to 😝 Go touch grass. Sync treated me well, I’m willing to pay the creator to have that same experience on Lemmy. That’s it. Stop being defensive, go for a walk.

Why can’t I just use the service that has a design I like?
I wouldn’t have used reddit if it wasn’t for sync and that same logic applies to lemmy. Adoption is critical for lemmy to succeed so please tone it down a bit, unless having the same 2 dozen people in your community was your personal appealing feature of lemmy.
Speak for yourself, but Infinity really isn’t as well made as Sync. I’d rather pay one time for a quality experience and support the developer. Also, no ads in the paid version.

if i am not wrong, it is google ads that does all the tracking, so once you get the adfree version, tracking doesn’t happen
