At the beginning of the 20th century, Chilean workers had no social or labor legislation that favored or protected them. It was they themselves, through mutual benefit societies, resistance societies and mancomunales, who organized themselves to protect their associates and promote proletarian solidarity.

The Federación Obrera de Chile (FOCH) began as a grouping of railroad workers with a mutualist orientation linked to the Democratic Party. In the mid-1910s, saltpeter workers began to join and it acquired a national character. Likewise, the Democratic Party lost influence when the revolutionary ideas of the Socialist Workers Party led by Luis Emilio Recabarren, who later became the Communist Party, were imposed on the organization, and the Federation assumed an anti-capitalist and revolutionary attitude that was strongly manifested in the social mobilizations that characterized the 1920s.

However, the enactment of the social laws and the Labor Code, between 1925 and 1931, radically changed the conformation of the labor movement and workers’ organizations. From then on, the unions and their federations debated whether to accept the new legislation and submit to its rules, as was the case of workers and employees in the state sector and large companies, or to continue with the classist and revolutionary discourse. The leadership of the workers’ movement, which adhered to the latter line, was divided between three large organizations: the FOCH, linked to the Communist Party, the CGT (National Confederation of Workers), of anarchist inspiration, and the CNS (National Confederation of Trade Unions), of socialist origin.

In 1934, the violent repression by Arturo Alessandri’s government of a national railroad strike was reacted by the unity of the different workers’ organizations. Thus, the Unified Command that emerged from the strike was transformed into a Trade Union Unity Front, which organized a Trade Union Unity Congress in December 1936, giving rise to the Confederation of Chilean Workers (CTCH).

The strength acquired by the new workers’ organization allowed them to form part of the political alliance that supported the candidacy of the radical Pedro Aguirre Cerda in the 1938 presidential election. The triumph of the Popular Front gave the CTCH a direct link with the new government, which, although it allowed it to grow as an organization, would later be the cause of its division and loss of prominence.

Indeed, at the end of the 1940s, the workers’ movement, which was strongly linked to the Communist Party through the Confederation of Workers of Chile, was strongly repressed and weakened by the government of Gabriel Gonzalez Videla when he enacted the Law for the Defense of Democracy or “Damned Law”. Consequently, the leadership of the workers’ movement was taken over by employee organizations, especially in the public sector, which through the leadership of Clotario Blest managed to organize a new workers’ confederation in 1953: the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (CUT).

Its not even the optics. Its just a bad metaphor. Imagine trying to clean a shirt in a bucket of blood? It just isn’t gonna work. I don’t care how dirty something is, blood will not and can not make it any cleaner. Sorry John.

The 2014 release of Quadrophenia in 5.1 surround and stereo comes on a Bluray, one which if ur disc was made in Mexico, causes players to vibrate loudly due to bad adhensive/finish and will come apart at the seam eventually. I want to make a copy for play on Bluray players in my multichannel 5.1 systems, and the original disc(2014 5.1 in DTS MA and Dolby TrueHD, 2014 and 1973 stereo in LPCM 24/96) is 33GB, hence two layers.

I did burn a DVD+RW featuring the 2014 5.1 in DTS-1541k/Dolby Digital 640, and the 1973 stereo track in untouched LPCM 24/96, but I wanted an unaltered lossless disc copy :)

That’s all fascinating but like why a blu-ray instead of plex?

I’m not trying to be aggressive, I’ve just literally never used a blu ray and don’t understand what the point of them is in a world with home networking.

I do also have the files backed up to both .mkv for playback and .m2ts disc backup. 99% of the time I will reach for the 1973 stereo which I have ripped in flac, but I also don’t always have a PC where home theatre systems are.

To be real it’s also kind of cope that I paid $95 for an extremely “rare” disc that’s got a very short shelf life.

I don’t have much interest in home theater myself, my usual movie watching setup is on my second monitor with both my speakers on the same side of the desk because that’s where I have room for them. But not having a pc where the home theater is is exactly the problem plex is made to solve.

Paying for files is a scam, pirate everything always.

I am a truly absurd person and got hooked on multichannel music when my wife gifted me the Dark Side of the Moon Immersion box, which has the quadraphonic 1974 mix on. The last time I bought a bluray was a cheap copy of The French Dispatch, I like buying Blurays cause it saves compared to rips (a modern Bluray movie with all the extras is 35-50GB, 4K rips are even worse) and I have a shelf of them, but the amount of Blurays I have that cost me more than $15 is very low. I have most rare or hard to find stuff downloaded to a hard drive, like I am not gonna pay $200 or whatever for an OOP Deep Space 9 DVD box.

Also yeah but my downstairs home theater has a 27" Toshiba CRT, what am I gonna hook up to that that can Plex? I do not have an actual Plex server set up, I usually just pull MKV files off the network to a PC to watch stuff, simpler. But getting a PC to work satisfactorily with a CRT is a bear, and plus starting a Bluray machine and putting a disc in is easier and quicker than booting an entire PC.

Last time I went on Soulseek most of the results for Quadrophenia were for basic HD rips of the 1979 film, not the multichannel mix of the 2014 album, because the High Fidelity Pure Audio disc had a low print run. Wasn’t much of an option to pirate it, as is often the case with multichannel music - The Best of the Guess Who in quad is only available as an ISO, for a fucking SACD, lmao. If it’s ONLY SACD, like the Live-Evil quad by Miles Davis, good fuckin luck. Chicago II in quad, What’s Going On in quad from the Japanese CD-4 vinyl, the Countdown to Ecstasy quad, all very hard to grab. I only even have Paranoid by Black Sabbath in quad cause someone uploaded the CD-4 rip to Youtube, lossy opus is literally the best we could find it in. So yeah, I choked up $95 for the HFPA Quadrophenia. The two other releases I’ve paid unacceptable amounts for are Birds of Fire ($79) and Bitches Brew ($70), I usually try to avoid overpaying though, like I got Creedence Gold and stuff from multichannel Youtube uploads.

getting a PC to work satisfactorily with a CRT is a bear

And getting a blu ray player to work with a CRT isn’t? Don’t they have the same modern digital outputs a pc or streaming stick would? And you’re watching 1080p 16:9 videos on a 480 scan line 4:3 CRT? I’m afraid I must agree, with all respect, that this is truly absurd.
