If I recall correctly, War and Peace starts from peace, and only later the war with Napoleon starts.
You’re supposed to read it back-to-front like manga.
The most iconic scene with Andrew Bolkonsky getting a concussion under the skies of Austerlitz happens in the first book out of four. It does start with civil ramblings, but war too starts early on.
