I don’t think this is will actually make Trump a martyr. The right has been minimizing their own violence so much, (Jan 6th, The attack on Pelosi, the Michigan state reps they sent death threats to, the Uvaldi School Massacre, the countless people Nazis stab or shoot every year) that they aren’t going to easily be able to turn the public perception to believing that “THIS IS BEYOND THE PALE”.

Even on 4chan’s Nazi channel /pol/ a plurality of people are saying it’s fake.

Glad your happy… You going to be happy when his base rallies now, too?

I love how left leaning all of lemmy is… But the comments encouraging the violence or disappointment in the fact the shooter “missed”, seems off.

All emotions, big on rhetoric, not so good on repurcussions & consequences for actions.

However. I don’t see much really coming from this, just a galvanized Trump base. Maybe some switcjes in the middle. And I wouldn’t be shocked if there’s a false flag, “Oooo, LOOK, now we’ve found a conservative that wants to kill Biden! Both sides!”

…except nobody’s dumb enough to assassinate a senile lame duck. And everybody knows, nobody wants Kamala as POTUS. 🙄

        ftfy.

Tell me any time in history where fascism has just said “You know what? You’re right. The votes say it all, we’re just gonna knock it off now…”

Violence has always been the thing that gets response. Without it, your begging and pleading is toothless. You’ll continue to get stomped on, you’ll continue to have your rights stripped away. You’ll continue to roll backwards in history until someone else says “You know what, this has gone too far…” and…uses violence to put an end to it.

You know why the pen is mightier than the sword? Because the pen can rally millions of swords in its place.

Tbh I’m surprised this hasn’t happened sooner to him or the Supreme Court. Not that I endorse violence, I’m just kind of surprised considering all the violence the right wing has perpetrated up to now. It’s really a last resort for everyone else.

Right, like how they all rose up during the BLM riots. Trump supporters won’t do anything. If they do a lot of people will defend themselves from them.

I do think people are becoming overly worried about this sort of thing having a negative effect, or a large amount of sway. I haven’t seen really anyone who doesn’t have a schizo political affiliation actually commit these sorts of things. The guy who killed shinzo abe killed him for affiliation with a cult, the guy who tried to kill reagan shot him because he was undiagnosed and thought a celebrity wanted him to do it.

I don’t think the right wing has enough support broadly, and the hardcore groyper trump types definitely don’t have enough support, in order to actually have some sort of large scale mass riot or protest like with BLM. Charlottesville is about the best they’re gonna be able to do. But despite their relatively lower numbers, and we’re talking like, a fraction of a fraction of a fraction here, we’ve seen that they are overwhelmingly ready to commit political violence over other political groups, as one might predict and as we saw during BLM. I agree with lots of people that are saying we might get retaliatory attacks from this, but I’m also agreeing that those might’ve happened anyways just as well, or might’ve happened for any other reason, it’s really hard to tell.

Your average trump supporter, though, I’d be incredibly surprised if they did anything, and I don’t think this is going to result in civil war despite how much people seem to want to manifest that as a reality. I’m more concerned with how this has probably just ensured that he’s gonna get back in the white house.

As I said to someone else- that is the literal definition of a martyr, not the political concept of a martyr. The latter is what matters. There are plenty of examples of political martyrs who survived and did well because of it. The most prominent right now is the House Majority Leader, Steve Scalise, who survived the mass shooter at the congressional baseball game a few years ago and has been riding that sympathy wave ever since.

For those thinking this is staged, listen to the audio carefully. You can hear the impact of the bullets landing near the podium before you hear the sound of the bullet being fired. You can hear a distinct click just before each pop; because bullets typically travel faster than sound, this is accurate to what you would actually hear if you were being shot at. This seems like a detail that Trump’s team would be too incompetent to have thought to account for.

    Oh fuck.

Very much sounds like gunfire in the clip CNN is currently playing on repeat, it sounds like the report from fairly distant shots at least a few times as the audio seems to re equalize after he gets pulled down by Secret Service.

CNN had a reporter on scene, showing basically the area for the crowd, then an open area, then a highway or road of some kind, then with a maybe 20 or 30 story building in the background; she indicated basically possible gunshots from that direction.

This would have been basically to Trump’s right, by the position he was facing, maybe 70 or 80 degrees to the right of the direction the podium faced.

As best I can tell, it looks like he initially got winged around his right ear? Then more shots are heard and he goes down and is tackled by Secret Service agents.

Its possible he may have just been winged, possible he took more rounds and it was not visible… he did get back up, apparently he got rushed to a motorcade and is presumably headed toward a hospital.

It seems to me to be astonishingly unlikely that a or multiple shooters could possibly have made these shots from inside the crowd without being basically murdered by them.

Update: Wolf is now interviewing someone who was apparently in the front row, and this person claims he saw or thought a General(?), one of Trump’s entourage, was shot in the head.

    This is extremely not good.

Update 2: Welp, apparently the shooter was inside the crowd, and he did get killed by the crowd.

Update 3: Wolf interviewing another attendee who claims two different calibers and directional sources of gunshots, they seem to think it is some kind of law enforcement shooting at the shooter.

Update 4: Shooter was apparently killed outside the event perimeter, by counter sniper fire according to whoever Wolf is talking to now. Apparently shooter was on some kind of single story building akin to a stable, though this is being described as preliminary and not definitive.

So 3 shots fired (rest were more rapid, so looked like SS responding), 2 people died, only trump get out of it without any major issue. A grazed ear implies that he survived by mere centimeters.

Then when going to the car he is mouthing “fight, fight, fight”. I’m sorry, but this is a very odd reaction for somebody that nearly died today.

He was trying to get people rioting on J6 (but that while succeeded, fortunately got stopped), he tried people to riot when he had criminal trial (didn’t work at all), and now in the heat of the moment, he thought that was perfect time to try it again?

For sake of everyone I hope this will also be unsuccessful. I’m glad Democrats quickly condemned this (this is something we quite missed in 2017-2020 when similar events happened).

Trump lost the popular vote to Clinton by 2.9 million votes. He lost to Biden by 8.8 million votes. The last Republican president to win the popular vote was George W. Bush.

It’s a Republican’s best friend, the Electoral college. More people want progressive candidates, not regressive backwards criminals.

With a more representative electoral system (like Ranked Choice voting) Republicans would be free to place a more moderate candidate as their first vote, assured in the knowledge that their vote would still count against the people they don’t want in office.

Further violence and a mild Civil War are not best case scenario. Queer people dying for your cause is not best case scenario.

Best case scenario (and what seems to be the alt theory on literally every social I have, and on some I don’t have), is that everyone believes this was a false flag (and/or there’s evidence it was a false flag). That fact that so many people IMMEDIATELY questioned the shooting is a really good sign. People just don’t trust him at all. Boy Who Cried Wolf etc

I don’t think vote to obscurity can apply here. Trump will always have a platform because he is a living engagement machine and that drives the Internet mad.
