On this day, 4 years ago the site was first launched (then a day later the first post made), Formed from chapotraphouse remnants, the old admins decided to make a site using Lemmy as its base. Originally called chapo.chat, Hexbear has grown into one of the biggest instances in the lemmyverse.

Despite various sitewide struggle sessions, wrecker incursions from other forums and federation drama, Hexbear has keep growing strong in its 4th year, now with 4 megathreads, over 4 million comments, 300k posts and much more.

Its being great running the general megathread for a bit over 3 years, since i took over i have tried to get it mostly in time and just one unlike during the old times, i like to think i have done a decent job, plus i have also added a bit of reading material to them so you nerds can learn from them and i like to think you have been reading them garcia-cock-shotty, its also nice to see the new megathreads how they have slowing grown up to the size to the old general mega in the time of the old admins.

dont have much else to say so have a good day nerd. also

Whats has been your favorite post/event from last year (july 2023-july 2024)?

I wont lie, all the fedidrama has been fun to read, especially when libs wander here

Megathreads and spaces to hang out:

reminders:

  • 💚 You nerds can join specific comms to see posts about all sorts of topics
  • 💙 Hexbear’s algorithm prioritizes comments over upbears
  • 💜 Sorting by new you nerd

It turns out the classic kitchen sponge, the ones with a hard side and a softer side, is a major source of microplastics and we just rub that stuff onto our plates and cooking utensils.

We are so cooked as a species.

Thank you to Hexbear and all of the comrades here for keeping me sane for the past 4 years. Without Hexbear I would still be posting in the trenches of r*ddit, arguing with the dumbest motherfuckers on the planet. This website is unironically helping me stay sane.

Special shout out to @[email protected] for cooking up the megathreads. hexbear-gay-pride

Kind of funny/sad how in Fallout 4 every single one of your companions who is not Danse is like “The Brotherhood of Steel are the worst”. Every interaction with the Brotherhood of Steel they’re like “We’re the worst and we love to totally eat shit and lose”. Literally there’s two plotlines about BoS teams arriving in the Commonwealth to immediately eat shit and get almost the whole party wiped out, in Danse and Brandis’ teams. Once they arrive their vertibirds start falling out of the sky every short walk you talk, trying to engage some mutants or raiders.

The reaction from a majority/plurality of the fanbase? “Ad victoriam brother! the Brotherhood are the best!”

One of my favourite things is how artists in the past would portray historic events in paintings with anachronistic clothing, weapons and armour. As in stuff more contemporary (or if older still not ancient). Legionaries dressed as Condottieri etc.

We should apply that films/TV/games with no exposition or context. Just imagine a film about the 30 years war but giving everyone WW1 style uniform and gear.

I think I accidentally made Fallout 4’s story better (admittedly not hard) with my alternative start. I did an escaped Synth. I made them the default looking female character and called them Nora. That said I have changed my hair, tattoos, scars etc during the game.

When I eventually got around the main quest, I find the body of Nora with the same recorded voice and features as my character dead in Vault 111. Kellog mistakes me for the dead Nora. I see her alive in his memories. Codsworth thinks I’m the old Nora. There’s obviously cracks in the mod and dialogue where things become janky.

But the whole thing has become murky and ambiguous. Is my character a Synth? Does my character know that? Does the Institute Know this? Does Shaun know I’m the original or a Synth copy?

Given I’m Railroad and I’m infiltrating the Institue our dialogue suddenly becomes a game of intrigue. I’m trying to butter him up so I can work to sabotage them. Is he observing me as an experiment in turn or is it a weird dying man’s attempt to resurrect his mother?

Used the prolewiki page on the “Holodomor” to convince someone with no prior knowledge that the prevailing narrative on the subject originates in Nazi propaganda and they immediately accepted it hell yeah.
