And why?

Love Fastmail, been a customer for years. Lightning fast web interface, decent app, rock solid and, for Darwin’s sake, a paid product so they leave your email alone instead of mine it endlessly.

I was with them for 10 years.

        They are great, it’s true.

The pricing just got egregious though.

Proton I guess? First tier is free, it’s encrypted, your data is protected by Swiss privacy laws… There’s an app for your phone and also a single VPN account as well.

They don’t have a linux client for their Drive storage solution so I am mad at them but it may fit the ticket for you.

My only problem with Proton is that they don’t work with native mail clients (especially mobile). I’d go with FastMail personally, but I do see the appeal of Proton.

Yeah, but it’s important to point out that the reason for that is that your data is encrypted at rest and they cannot decrypt it for you and your vanilla imap client.

They do have a decryption app for desktop that allows you to use your desktop email client.

Your local email coop … we have a small one where i live. We own the infrastructure. Seize the means of computation right …

Sadly “your local email coop” is very far from being common. Sounds like a fun thing for nerds to do, but I doubt normal folks would be interested in that, over just using one of the big players.

Exactly. There were good comments on that thread already.

I’ve been using ForwardEmail, and have been happy with them so far. Their free tier only allows aliasing, but the cheapest paid tier is only $3/month, and you can use Thunderbird/K-9 as your mail client.

Still riding my free google workspace account for personal domains.

If I had to move I would look into a paid Microsoft account.

I also looked at zoho because of how cheep it was, and Synology for self-hosted. I ruled out the Synology because self hosting sucks and zoho because anti-spam is hard.

Tuta (previously Tutanota) because it’s private, runs on 100% renewable energy, very affordable if you want to use a custom domain, has end-to-end encryption between Tuta emails and it’s email clients are open source including a very nice app on F-Droid

Their apps on desktop and mobile are very nice. Second Tuta.

Honestly, it’s not as hard as people make it out to be. Apart from regular updates I only have to touch the configuration every few years to keep up with the newest useless anti-spam measures.

Running the server itself is fine (I have done and still do run a mail server), but getting the large email providers to not flag your message as spam can be quite tricky.

100% spot on. I did this for many years, and the sysadmin stuff was actually a fun little hobby. There were many seasons in terms of deliverability. I only ran personal email, never a list or anything like that, my ip wasn’t on any black list, but from time to time emails wouldn’t be delivered, or they would start going to peoples spam folders. I’d get fixed what I could using google/outlook/whatever’s tools or reach out to the mail admin address. Many times deliverability would be fixed, but months later the cycle would repeat. Or worse, I’d get silently and suddenly banished to spam. There’s nothing more you can do about that (yes I had all the things to prevent it).

Ended up moving my mx records to fastmail and using them for email. It’s not much, if any, more cost than running a vps for email (well, if you only consider one user), but I’ve had drastically improved deliverability.

Long story short, email is terribly broken, but it’s a good idea to have your own domain so that you own your address.

I really like purelymail. I’ve had no problems, their billing is super simple and really cheap. The security options are nice and it doesn’t want to sell me a VPN or share my files or any crap like that.
