With figures such as Joe Biden, 82 and Nancy Pelosi, 84, still dominating headlines, younger members fear Gen Z are being put off

Age is a factor sure. But Democrats need to stop being centrists and move left if they have any hope in appealing to the masses. The DNC needs to also reflect this change. Otherwise they’ll just push for a moderate like Biden again.

I don’t think that’s true. The majority of the U.S. isn’t as left leaning as we’d like to believe they are.

Edit: Downvote all you want. Lemmy is a very left leaning site, and not at all representative of the wider population.

I mean how do you think Obama won? And Biden to a lesser extent.

You’re right but I don’t think the general population is as right leaning as they believe they are, either. It’s a team they root for and identify with.

Anecdotally, I have very conservative family members who will agree with many progressive ideas until they realize they’re agreeing with democrats. Then they’re pissed!

Many progressive policies are popular across the board, including Republicans and independents.

I would disagree, I would say the majority is left leaning. The issue is that we don’t have an electoral system that can accurately reflect that. With things like the electoral college and the senate preventing any form of majority representation as well with just how our election are done( 51/49 winner take all) the deck is stacked against any form of progressive or leftist politics from even taking place.

The issue is that you can do a list of leftist policies and have a supermajority of Americans agree they’d be good ideas until they find out they’re leftist ideas.

Yeah, but recent elections show that’s what gets people to show up to vote.

America does lean right politically speaking, yes. And Lemmy as a whole is more left leaning. No argument there.

That being said, the election itself saw a poor turnout for Democrats thanks to some unpopular policies that were made to try and appeal to Republicans. This led to Harris to incrementally lose support over the weeks leading up to the election and which culminated in Trumps victory. She started off pretty strong. People wanted something new than what Biden had to offer, which was a moderate approach to politics when the other side are far-right fascists. But she stuck to the status quo as a whole and that backfired as the reasons why Biden was so unpopular (age aside) extended to her as well.

i think i agree. data shows a large amount of americans want policies that the left supports, but they want those things because it benefits them, not because they believe in the ethical considerations or the ideals of collectivization. if they are promised by a fascist they’ll get those policies as soon as they kick out target minority, then they’ll gladly follow the fascist.

Just look at Missouri, votes for minimum wage increases and an abortion amendment but reelected GOP candidates across the board. The dems lost because of a mix of elitism and the fact that they were governing at a time when incumbants globally are being kicked out due to post-covid economies.
