What a shitty government you have if the truth puts it on danger. I see why Russia and China appeal to this information (and misinformation) war, seems like the US people has grown to be very gullible, so whoever controls the narrative, controls them. And totally self inflicted, your own government did this to you so they could control you better.

And Amerikkka plays the information war too. I’m remembering a CIA operation to spread vaccine misinformation in the Philippines.

If China and Russia are “bad” because of the information war, Amerikkka is at the very least just as guilty. At the very least.

Voters not seeing that they’re getting played is its own problem. DNC can push whoever, up to voters to decide whether to follow or push back.

The RNC tried to push Jeb or Rubio in 2016, Republicans put in Trump instead.

So let me get this straight…

The Tiktok ban, that was first proposed in Jan 2020, and was banned from government devices in Dec 2022, was getting first drafts for laws banned in Dec 2022, another law was proposed to block in nationwide in Jan 2023, was further restricted in March of 2023, and was signed into law to banned Tiktok nation wide on April 2023 (to be completely removed by Jan 2025) is solely being done to censor information about a conflict that started in Oct 2023…

    Yeah, check outs. 👍

If you make the point simpler it works. “We are banning tiktok because it is a social media platform we have no ability to censor” with this in mind it makes sense to say “its because of isreal-palastine” because that is just a facet of not having control over platform censorship.

If you really believe that when they say they are getting rid of tiktok it is for national security you’re a fucking rube, they have been taking away our freedoms for decades under the guise of national security, they sure as fuck dont consider it any sort of threat that any of the American social media platform would sell your data do a hostile foreign power. They want it gone because A) they cannot control what spreads on it, and B) their rich owners arnt profiting from it.

If you want to argue that any social media platform dying is a good thing, then i can at least sympathize (thought id argue this isnt a step in the direction of getting rid of social media in general), but if you think banning tiktok is about anything more than corruption you’re a rube.

This part is illogical though. Claiming that due to a future event, we went back in time to block/and-or control a message makes no sense. This was my entire point. They are blocking it for many reasons and have been for years, but claiming the whole reason they spent years attempting to block it because of a single event that happened years later makes no sense.

Claiming that due to a future event

You misunderstand, I am saying that the original idea can be about inability to control. Then seeing anti isreal sentiment on tiktok, and you can say “see we were right, this is what we knew would happen”.

Or in other words, congress doesnt exist in a time void, they have the ability to predict future outcomes and legislate against them. You dont have to know isreal palastine is going to be the new thing, but you know that there will be a next thing and 100% it will play poorly if you cant control the narrative (i.e. lie to people)

single event that happened years later makes no sense.

The genocide of palestinians didn’t begin in 2022. And the above commenter is correct, the US wants full control of its social media in order to spread pro-US foreign policy views, and tiktok is a threat to that.

Never said it did. I did say/indicate that it was never a social/political issue until 2023. Things can happen for a long time, but take a sudden change to make it a big issue.

In fact, please, I would love to see anything political about Israel/Palestine in US politics/policy attempting/intended to make Israel look better on regards to Palestine (as is implied in the article) that predates Oct 2023. As you’ve, and others, have pointed out (I already knew, since it dates to biblical times), that it’s been an issue for so long, then this should be simple. It keeps trying to be pointed out that the Oct 2023 event seemed to mean nothing about it, so you or anyone else should have no problems with this.

Bonus points for showing how it relates to Tiktok before that date too, which again with everyone’s insistence about it, should be no problems at all.

The law was April 2024, so you know, after October 2023. The sudden political push to get that done instead of stall out line 2020-2023 is what’s being talking about.

You referenced March 2023 as a restriction though, so it seems like you were aware. Between March 2023 and April 2024 something changed the political momentum, which is plainly stated, though you’re refuting with what appears to be an incorrect timeline.

I referenced March 2023, because it’s when the RESTRICT act passed which limited Tiktok. I also referenced April 2023 as a total public ban because I mixed it with the date that Montana banned public usage of Tiktok, which was followed by 2024 bill “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act”, being a public ban like Montana, but also close to the RESTRICT act. Similar acts, close dates.

And I am only refuting what the article is claiming, that the Tiktok banned is solely about improving the image of Israel in regards to Palestine, because until Oct 2023, it wasn’t US political issue so wouldn’t have had anything to do with the ban. There never was a reference to anything about israel, Palestine, and Tiktok before that date. Which is the opposite of what this article claims.

It is an article from May 2024 describing where Blinken and Romney explictly state the political push to get the law passed was directly influenced by TikTok demonstrating pro-Palestinian perspectives.

Also of note they didn’t rule out extending similar action to entities similar to TikTok.

Yes because nobody is talking about the Palestine/Israel situation on any other social media platforms. /s

The more likely reason is that it’s a social media company that the government currently has zero control over. Being owned by a (Taiwanese?) company the US can’t ask them to track data and the CIA/FBI can’t fill it with propaganda or whatever else they want.

My apologies, I got the Asian countries all jumbled up in my head. The CEO of TikTok is from Singapore, but the parent company of TikTok (ByteDance) is Chinese.

So throw in a layer of national security concerns and it makes far more logical sense why they want to have China sell the US side of TikTok to an American owned company.

I still don’t think the Palestine situation has much of anything to do with what’s going on with the US governments distain for TikTok. They didn’t like it way before the Israel/Palestine situation kicked off again.

Reddit, twitter, Facebook, Twitch, YouTube, tiktok and now Lemmy. I can’t think of a single social media site I’ve used in the last year that didn’t have people talking about Palestine in one way or another.

It’s why I doubt the claim that the US government is specifically trying to ban tiktok because of the Palestine/Israel situation. They wanted TikTok gone before the October 7th 2023 attack.

I believe it’s more likely a nation security issue being owned by a Chinese company than anything to do with Palestine whatsoever.

I’ve been paying attention. I could open any of those sites and find pro Palestine comments/post/content/profiles within 30 seconds.

I would be willing to bet you got banned from reddit for just being a regular old fashioned antisemite. You can call it “anit-zionist” or whatever you want, but that is still just being antisemitic with extra mental gymnastics.

Just because it’s not the front page of every single website known to mankind doesn’t mean pro Palestine content is being moderated off those platforms. More likely they are removing the many many pro Palestinian posts that also happen to also be antisemitic which is a lot of it.

And before you get mad at me I’ve been blaming the Jews for all my problems since I was a kid (jokingly) because of South Park. Technically I’m quoting Cartman and I don’t actually mean any of it, but I do probably say “I blame the Jews” at least once a day.

I voted for Harris in yet another attempt at harm reduction, not hope, but the Neoliberals and Republicans have just been playing good cop/bad cop since Reagan, intentionally stoking and magnifying social wedges to keep Americans divided and at each other’s throats while they serve the same masters on protecting the shape and fucked up priorities of our sociopath owned economy we don’t get a vote on from either major party.

Voting for Trump just makes our collapse sound like fart noises. We’ve been in freefall since the 1980s, our society strip mined for private profit. IMHO the United States under the current Constitution was irrevocably captured destroyed half a century ago. That’s when America died. The last 50 years or so has just been a combination of leftover momentum and denial.

In a dark way, it’s almost refreshing to someone like me to finally see everyone else waking up to the grim reality there’s literally no longer any way to squint hard enough to play pretend the country isn’t irreparably fucked. Better than all the willful self-delusion many enjoyed as education crumbled, healthcare became a murderous con-job, retirement became a decadent luxury for the few, etc.

We haven’t been a society for a long time. We’re an oligarch piggy bank/military platform. We wage war on the world, both through hard warfare and strong arm diplomacy, to open up new exploitation markets for our capitalists by trying to make other nations turn on their own people for private profit in exchange for a cut for their respective elites.

We are the primary vector of the world’s greed disease destroying societies, civilization, and even the very air we all breathe.

I.m.o. US media has watered down revolution and resistance to injustice into purely a matter of aesthetics. Our movies, shows, and books constantly recast events to gut the actual historical context. Its why MAGA people can imagine themselves as a sort of resistance, because they are so used to identifying the aesthetics and not the substance of political movements.
