Hi everyone!

2025 is here, and I’m curious to hear your thoughts on Voyager for Lemmy.

  • What features would you like to see added to Voyager in 2025?
  • Are there any bugs or issues that are bothering you?

💜

I would love to see a way to group communities akin to “multireddits”. So if I want a view of just my Apple related communities, for example, I can click my custom community and see only that content.

I’ve just been checking out lemmy web client called tesseract and it has a client-side group function. This is not a multireddit function, but just a way to organize your subscriptions (basically like adding tags to communities). But i was thinking… what if i was looking at my subscribed feed, and clicked on one of my “group” names… and the client then filtered my subscribed feed to only show posts from communities in that group? That would be multireddit-like behaviour, and still use back-end for sorting/merging and whatnot. Not as efficient as server-side multireddits, but it might be a possible workable hack if one didn’t want to wait for lemmy to add the functionality on the server.

I mostly use it on an iPad mini in landscape mode, when lying down and casually reading. Two things:

    1. When scrolling on the main feed, if your left or right finger accidentally touches the screen, instead of scrolling, you’re inside the post, which isn’t what you intended. So you have to be extra careful keeping your fingers away. Be nice if there was a 1 or 2" zone on each side which only does scroll instead of tap. Not sure I’m explaining it right.

    2. Again, on an iPad mini, the Post box only shows a couple of lines for editing. Most of the screen is taken by application chrome.

Other than that, love the app. Use it daily.

Thanks! This should be doable. I think there’s an issue for it on github, not sure though

Newer lemmy versions have the option to add a thumbnail url yourself when creating a post. It would be nice to have that also on Voyager.

One feature I’d like to have is the option (maybe a setting) to recover text when commenting and then pressing as sometimes I reply to a comment and then want to read the original post again.

Thanks for making this app, it has been the Lemmy app I’ve tried by far

This for me too. Reddit Is Fun/RIF let users save comment drafts. This was great for going back to check anything in Lemmy beyond the one comment you’re replying to.

Show edited usernames and hexbears (and other instances that use the feature) pronouns next to usernames

My edited username for example doesn’t show she/her

The one bug that’s always super annoyed me: clicking on a photo in my feed and when I swipe out it takes me to the “communities” tab where you choose Home/Local/All and it completely loses my place in my feed

Definitely will be added for peertube/loops, but Youtube would be hard to do so in a privacy preserving way.

Out of curiosity, if someone posts a YouTube link and you auto play the video, what gets shared with YouTube?

In order to do it with youtube I would need to let Youtube run its own embed code, so who knows :P

Searching in the settings would be great

Search bar for settings. So I can tour a word in the settings page and quickly get to the relevant setting.

    • Tags are working great! Would love to be able to link to the comment that made me tag, too.
    • Would be nice to have the searchable modlog instead of just myself
    • If I’m in a thread and accidentally hit back, I have to go back through the list to find that post again. A “last post” or something in the menu would be handy.
    • A bunch of gifs/videos don’t show/play, but it works in other clients, instead I have to open in a browser. That would be a nice one to hit.
    • db0 added some flairs, which are apparently natively supported by lemmy, which is cool. They are gigantic in voyager (in comment threads when its posted standalone). Compare to the thread here. Would be great if this was supported to display next to the users in app too.

Definitely the one app I keep coming back too though, great work!

That should already be there - in the header of the edit tag dialog for the user, tap the comment button. LMK if it isn’t working.

searchable modlog instead of just myself

This is in the plans, just need to do it in a way that is apple/google store compliant

If I’m in a thread and accidentally hit back, I have to go back through the list to find that post again. A “last post” or something in the menu would be handy.

There is an issue for forward on github. Otherwise, for the post feed, hiding posts can be a good alternative if you scroll long distances.

A bunch of gifs/videos don’t show/play, but it works in other clients, instead I have to open in a browser. That would be a nice one to hit.

If you have an example of something that doesn’t work in Voyager but does work in other clients, please let me know. I’m not aware of anything at the moment.

Neat - although it is not a native lemmy thing afaik.

The flair icons are just lemmy custom emoji. This is native and they should be displayed as a normal emoji size. this is already handled correctly in lemmy ui and tesseract, but voyager displays them at their full size instead of resizing them to 48x48 or 24x24,which can dominate the comments

Reading these flair from threativore and displaying them in the ui proper (i.e. Outside of a comment) is not native and I’m still looking for ui dev buy in 😅

they should be displayed as a normal emoji size

OH yeah, I did make a tweak to that recently so emojis are smaller.

btw, I noticed that they are small on db0 instance but don’t look right on remote instances - e.g. https://vger.social/post/11849459

I think this is because the markdown needs the “emoji blah” class name - e.g.

           ![Facepalm](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/0442a870-62f6-42e0-91ee-a664ba65b5b2.png "emoji facepalm")

(notice the “emoji facepalm” - prefix by word “emoji” make it small on remote instances I think)

Yes I know the markdown text denotes them as emoji, but lemmy by default doesn’t add “emoji” to all its custom emoji. Just the emoji shortname. I think the solution tesseract has is to display them at emoji size of they have “emoji” in that text, , or if it matches one of the custom emoji shortdodes. But I’m guessing the later in not possible in remote instances. Hmm, I can adjust my scripts to always add “emoji” there as well, but by default the lemmy ui doesn’t add it.

Edit Actually nevermind it seems it’s just tesseract not adding it. I’ll open and bug report for them ADHD: A lightning butterfly in orangered color

        I think I’m missing something… I’m on 2.32.2, I don’t see a comment button

If you have an example of something that doesn’t work in Voyager but does work in other clients, please let me know. I’m not aware of anything at the moment.

I can’t remember what it was, I’ll have to check when I see it, don’t remember the URL unfortunately.

Edit: Just came across one with files.catbox.moe from this post

          You should see this:

but it only works if you tag from the comment itself. So you need to long press username (on the comment), edit, write tag.

I try to use Voyager every few months, but keep going back to Sync because:

    • I want more control over the appearance of my feed, comments, and replies. For the feed, Sync provides:

    • The Back stack on Android seems weird. I don’t use a lot of apps with bottom nav bars, but I think they should maintain an entry in the back stack for each category. Voyager seems to keep every instance that I’ve visited as a separate entry.

A lot of people like Voyager, so you’re clearly doing a great job. Keep it up!

Apart from the known iOS issue requiring the occasional app restart, no bugs and loving the app. Only feature i’d like to see is a display of the instance in the post list. So not just ‘news’, but ‘[email protected]’. Some community names exist on different instances (which I think is not helping new users, but it’s a lemmy problem, not a voyager one)

Hmm - it should always add the @example.com if its a remote community. Local omits. Could add a setting to always force it on

It does with ‘show community at top’ turned on. But that makes it harder to click on the title to see the post. With that option turned off, it show the community at the bottom but without instance info

Ah yes, the compact mode. There could be an option for that in the future, I don’t think there’s a request on github for that yet.

Could you give me a hint? Gone through the settings but can’t see it. Community icon is an option, but those are too small to be useful (for me anyway)
