Summary

Sen. Bernie Sanders is touring Iowa and Nebraska to rally against “the oligarchy,” aiming to energize progressives rather than launch a 2028 presidential bid.

At 83, he seeks to shape the Democratic Party’s future, arguing it lost in 2024 by neglecting working-class voters.

He hopes to influence budget battles and the 2026 midterms, targeting GOP lawmakers in battleground districts.

With Democrats lacking clear leadership, Sanders’ prominence and focus on economic inequality could define the party’s direction in the Trump-Musk era.

I love how Americans, even in left-wing spaces like Lemmy, would rather threaten global destruction than show some goddamn humility for once.

How do you read that as a threat?

I’m an American that voted against Trump. I can show humility by saying this country not only fucked up, but is well on the path to crumbling into a big shitty hateful mess.

But the stuff about emissions and nuclear weapons is spot on. Our Republican controlled government is absolutely going to increase our emissions, and climate change is a global problem.

The nuclear weapons exist obviously, and if one of them gets launched towards any place for any reason, it is likely to mean the end of most of civilization.

For what it’s worth, I think the environmental consequences are guaranteed to happen (or at least, we are guaranteed to get worse and shift the burden to others), and the nuclear stuff is pretty unlikely.

Though unfortunately I could definitely see a goal of Trump’s compromisers being to start a war with the rest of NATO.

Unless the democratic party’s platform becomes deny the oligarchy access to the levers of power, defend the working and middle class against the billionaires, and depose those who would enact political violence via law or pen, I’m not interested.

It’s hard to tell the difference between Democrats and Republicans. They both seem to embrace the same ideology.

          No it isn’t.

Republicans are fascist, eugenicist, lead-addled dementia patients with no regard for human life outside their immediate families and even then only to the degree that they can be exploited. Their core values are narcissism and personal greed.

Democrats are performatively-compassionate cowards who are terrified of change and value avoiding conflict above anything else. Their core values are looking outwardly like they give a damn and not being yelled at by anybody.

The two are incredibly distinct from one another.

Fascism cannot rise on its own. Fascism is only possible with a weak, complicit liberal party. Their continual ratchet effect has enabled Our current level of fascism in this country.

and in four years when this shit is worse for the entire planet due to these fuck bags - there will be a ton of comments asking why Americans didn’t stand up to this stuff when if first showed it’s ugly head.

Best to plant a tree 20 years ago, second best time is now. The damage that is done can be contained to just America if there is an organized opposition and I’m hoping that Bernie starts it.

The only way to stop it now is to go full Luigi

I think usually Bernie means well, but I think Democratic party is far beyond saving. We will have no significant progress no less opposition to fascism, until they are gone.

Electoralism is largely a dead end under the duopoly.

It’s not defeatism, it’s an acknowledgment that we need to look beyond electoralism within the Dems. Mutual aid, dual power, direct action. If electoralism, build a grass roots infrastructure for a new third party or help an existing one rise.

Third party success won’t happen with just running someone for president every four years. It has to start at very local level, and engage with the public between elections.

This strategy is literally how you resolve that issue though. The Democratic Party is just a vehicle, it literally used to be a pro-slavery party. It can be remade just like Trump remade the Republican Party in his image. Bernie is doing exactly what needs to be done. It’s by no means the only strategy, but it is an important one to pursue.

I admire Bernie but most Trump supporters I met or know seem either very rich, or poor but quite believe he will turn things around and things getting worse before it gets better is ok. We are talking about cult, expecting them being rational is dead end.

What’s the point of saving a tree whose fruits are unpopular and the nutrition is lacking? It is common to fell trees that are past their fruiting prime to make way for a younger crop.

The “splinter” of the Republicans was created on behalf of, backed by, and directly benefited the corporate oligarchy and their capital.

The splintering of the left to hold those same corporate oligarchs responsible — threatening their wealth and power — will not be backed by corporations or their capital. It will be ruthlessly attacked by them, and if the threat becomes more than just a fringe movement the response will be the full force of the fascist dictatorship, the propaganda machine, surveillance state/capitalism, and MIC (e.g. death camps, mass murder, etc).

But it should still happen, because the chance of success diminishes with every position fascists fill… If it doesn’t happen sooner than later it’ll probably never happen.

As someone in my 50s let me just tell you this - if you are over 40 and live in the US, you ain’t seeing normalcy in our government again in your lifetime. Mark my words. And if you are under 40, you might, but it’s gonna be a rough ride for awhile.

So if Democrats need to use this upcoming lengthy period of upheaval to come out of the other side with a party actually interested in resisting the fascists and the oligarchs, that can be the sliver lining to the decades of struggle that have now begun.

This honestly isn’t a bad idea at this point. It would still take a ton of money, a ton of support, a ton of boots on the ground to achieve though. It would really need to snowball into a movement. Who are the superfriends of “Fuck you, pay Americans fairly” kind of politicians?

They’re blind apologists for the various left regimes that have identified themselves as leftist, anti-imperialist, anti-western, sometimes even including North Korea and Cambodia under Pol Pot. Often they align themselves with right-wing governments like modern Russia and Iran, because they’re against the geopolitical west.

The term was coined after the USSR rolled tanks into Hungary in the 50’s to squash pro (Socialist) democracy protests. Some leftists stuck with the Soviets as they matched into Hungary and Praugue, and others spoke out against what they saw as tyrannical repression of democracy.

Real Question - Bernie Sanders is old; it’s 83. If Bernie passes - who carries on his message? AOC? Who fr? You?

Which, in my opinion, the message is honest outreach to people, IRL, and share the message that Billionares are buying our Politicians which needs to be addressed (like, the sooner the better)?
