The mods at r/popculture pointed it out. And then the screenshot above.
The subreddit drama
I am not surprised though. Someone with money is now exerting influence because Reddit is the most popular place for the resistance to oligarchy. Oligarchy aim is to own all media and they believe that will be the end of resistance’s ability to spread messages.
For a brief few years we had communication platforms that could topple dictatorships but now here we are.
Yeah, now we have platforms that can topple democracies
Come to Lemmy, we got cookies
How about card games and sex workers?
Haven’t seen much of either, honestly
man we went from spacedicks hitting the front page to this
Reddit’s strategy is to replace all users with AI bots rented from Elon.
The fact that people still use reddit is insane to me.
They keep permanently suspending ppl so theyll wind up here, almost like someone working there secretly wants the fediverse to do well and is shifting the population over by permanently banning them (I dont really believe this before ppl argue like im stating a fact)
I now subscribe to this theory. Might dust off my old Reddit account and try to become a mod in my favorite subs so I can perma-ban all the top posters to jumpstart those communities in the fediverse…
I got banned for, I don’t even remember what, it was something really minor. Got a new account using Brave, and have been shadowbanned. Absolutely non-functional site for me now. Banning people based on upvotes though, holy shit. To suppress posts that people actually like? That’s the whole point of going there for me: the garbage gets knocked to the bottom where no one has to see it. Not anymore
I’ve been on lemmy for like a year and
-
the worst thing that’s happened on lemmy is that nicole botspam
-
meanwhile Reddit has done at least 3 heinous unforgivable things in that time
yeah, just got banned, it seems like today i finally begin my lemmy journey. How well does it hold up for deep subject matter knowledge that i found in some subreddits over the years and how is the best way to tap into that knowledge with lemmy? Does google index them or is their native search better than whatever reddits search was?
got banned for trying to help reddit too. Threatened to punch anybody that upvoted violent content and to knock it off! Being a bootlicker is one thing, but the gaul to be ungrateful to someone trying to help!??
That is a bridge to far and I say “Good day, sir.”
Now lemmy gets the opportunity to impress me, I hope it is grateful for the chance.
Ironically Lemmy is way worse if you post on the tankie instances. Thankfully it is growing enough to marginalize those coms
those tankies have probably been banned for legit reasons on reddit and just infest lemmy.
i don’t think my instance is even federated to them

Luigi Luigi. Luigi Luigi Luigi. Luigi, Luigi Luigi hahaha. Luigi Luigi.
Refreshing to see a comment like this. I was dumbfounded when I opened the Reddit thread this morning and found NONE of this. The Reddit of Old is quite dead. Long live the Reddit of Whatever the Fuck this is; or, better yet, platforms like Lemmy.
Fuck king Krasnov, hail luigi
they enshittified themselves when they enforced the new forever scrolling feature of posts on the site.
Why don’t they just say what they really want? They want you to be docile, not challenge the echo chamber, and upvote everything and smile like an idiot. I’ve learned this lesson and pretty much just block all ragebait subs and mostly sit quietly in the corner. Just watch the ads like a good data point.
they dont want to be the ones saying it, they use through thier right wing propaganda arms to do it.
So sad…I loved Reddit…I’m so sad to see it come to this. I’m so sad for all of the young people who think this is how the internet should be……
Ive been on Reddit for 10 to 15 years. Its always been a strange place but ive never seen anything like what’s going on at the moment.
- weird rules (like ‘Luigi’) being applied system-wide without being communicated
- automated actions applied to individual users site-wide, like allowing them to engage but preventing them from creating posts anywhere
- over zealous mods. I’m assuming a lot of mods got sick of it and left over the last few years and those doing the work are under experienced. Or maybe just AI. Its possible.
- GPTs engaging in posts and comments for training
- agents from hostile governments agitating and spurring on political discussions that favour their agenda.
So yeah I’m giving up on it now, its just no fun anymore.
I am pretty sure a bunch of mods on big subreddits are actually Reddit employees cosplaying as normal users too.
Oh, and Reddit is now shadow banning your accounts when you evade a ban on a sub. So now I got all my accounts shadow banned because I ended up commenting on a sub I was banned on one account without noticing it, so I have zero reasons to go back to using reddit anymore. At least before I got a ban and was notified about how long it would take for my accounts to be usable again, now they are shadow banned without any notifications and I have no idea if they will ever go back to normal or not, so fuck it.
oh yea i know some admins can be the mods. there are 92 mods that own over 500 subs, so i would think they are part of this power group of mods. and then we got the lowly mods of the regular subs. i heard about the blanket shadowbans in another site, they still do that to people who had100s of accts, but it also hit regular people too, that dint even violate a policy, so im thinking its an AI doing all these bannings and so many innocents are just caught up, and they cant even repeal it.
I got banned three times in a month, and now I’m finally permanently banned. This is America.
5-6accts were simulatenouslly banned last month, because i was temp banned for reporting someone, so it triggered thier “AI to look for any account they can ban”. they also retroactively(i assume) applied the ban to any accts you made, if any of your accts even if deleted years ago participated in getting banned in a subreddit. allegedly i heard a ban/shadowban can last over a year, but im pretty sure its arbitrary and most likely switched to being permanent in most cases.
r/technology decided to ban me for reporting obvious misinformation, and conversation manipulation around a trump post.
It was the last straw for me too. Fuck Spez.
It’s a censorship hellhole.
Once the humanity is taken out of a company, there is nothing left but abuse.
Yeah, this sure. But I think primarily Reddit doesn’t want its platform to be used to organize and protest. This is how they are setting the stage.

My 11 year old account, very active account, was recently banned from reddit but I’m not sure why. They deleted the comment so I’m not sure what it said. But I’ve been posting there for 11 years with no issues so something has changed.
I believe the comment I made was talking about if the US invaded Canada and I said they would be hard pressed to hold the country because Canadians look like Americans and we would take the battle across the border.
It’s a common sense statement. Doesn’t incite any more violence then quoting half the things Trump says about Canada any given day.
I think Reddit is purging the left leaning accounts and making a Nazi safespace like Twitter.
the amount of posts about trump is pretty obvious which way the site was heading, all the negative press helps trump, and its low effort to. its not about what hes done legislately in most cases, its about some stupid shit he did, like falling asleep or farting.
Easier to conquer a disconnected, uncoordinated, and gagged enemy unable to rally a force united by common messaging and calls to action.
Legit question -not tryna start shit/trigger intentionally: has this kind of reddit response ever happened before? Ive been on reddit for the past 10+ years, but as a comfy lurker. I remember “internal” reddit issues when the 3rd party thing was a thing.
(Quotes bc, from my POV as a lurker/casual user, the upset regarding reddit nixing 3rd party was too meta for me to really understand beyond “this is bad for reddit users”)
I’ve gained enough info by casual usage-proxy to move over to lemme. But ngl, im not grasping the magnitude of why “reddit is bad now”. I dont disagree, but i couldnt explain on my own to an outsider why i agree with that sentiment.
Obviously, censorship is bad mmmkay - I’m not questioning this. I have a gut feeling that making the switch and getting my global info from the fediverse is a good call. I just can’t express why, and am requesting assistance from the community’s exp in how I can express that. This seems like as good a topic ad any for a platform to discuss the matter.
I was there for 14 years. I never heard of some shit like that.
Same here man and neither have I
TL;DR - ELI5 why current reddit is bad, assuming I have no bias. Because I don’t, other than like minded community opinion telling me it’s bad now. I’d like to be able to express to others why, should the opportunity present itself.
Some quick points:
-
blocked off API access (last I checked you could get around this by paying an exorbitant fee 🙄) meaning 3rd party apps don’t work and you absolutely must use the official app which is garbage and collects all kinds of data from what I’ve heard (never used it) as well as disabling services that do stuff with reddit data from the API such as mass delete scripts users would use to get their content off reddit
-
fertile ground for bots and bad actors to manipulate, misinform and recruit users into alt-right and other spaces that perpetuate harm
-
moderation policies and practices that allow and in some cases encourage Nazi shit while blocking or restricting harm reduction, LGBTQIA+, anti-fascist, etc topics
-
massive astroturfing and dis/misinfo campaigns
-
flagging the word “Luigi” for violent content with automod and giving people warnings for upvoting content that goes against preferred narratives
And certainly more that I’m forgetting
-
it wasnt that bad before, trumps 1st term, then every sub became extremely sensitive to many topics, and politics started to infilitrate a ton of subs(you have the bots to thank for it) this is just the latest result of it. this last election, reddit went to overdrive to ban anyone. i found myself moving between different acc, to seperate the accounts liability to potential bans(acct for specific niches).
If you talk about the Founding Fathers, specifically regarding treatises on violence. The Tree of Liberty was an autoban for at least a decade now.
Just put “luigi” at the bottom of every comment.
Honestly this is a good idea, just overwhelm their review queues
Reddit has been doing this shit for years. It’s a big reason why I left. Spez (little piggie) was only the catalyst.
A few ban-happy,power tripping moderators did come over here, though. I don’t have specifics on that, I just know I’ve seen them, and I’ve also been banned for some real dumb shit. I just stay away from those communities/instances.
This feels somewhat different because previously, generally speaking, the problematic subreddits (jailbait, fat people hate, etc) were pretty much isolated to that subreddit, so action could be taken to that subreddit without a big blast radius to the rest of the site. Also, for the most part, the issues were targeting marginalized people. Going after people in the comments of r/popculture for upvoting a comment about Luigi is nothing like previous controversies.
I swear, there are some people that actively seek out parts of the internet to gain control of so they can push their agendas.
It’s like they get physically distressed at the idea of people discussing things they don’t want being discussed or holding views they don’t want held.
This is awesome. Are they going to start banning any reference to the SuperMario Bros IP, now?
e.g.
“This guy is looking more and more like Bowser every day, someone ought to do something about it”
“Princess peach has had it, time to go get the parasol”
“I’m sick of these motherfucking goombas on this motherfucking Earth”
Luigi is a hero and should be honored as such.
