Why are most people here are negative and rude?

Just to be clear here, I am not talking about instance, rather I am asking about the whole community.

There is no one I seen here who even had expressed any passion towards anything really.

I cannot understand how did that happen?

Okay, there are three reasons why this is:

    1. Anonymity grants people the ability to be assholes.

    2. You’ve done something or said something that was going to get people riled up over.

    3. People from rejected instances, sites .etc come here to carry over their shitty nature.

You’ll have to be more specific. I’m not seeing any unusual amount of negativity.

What’s that thing about expressing any passion? What do you mean by that?

Yep, most smaller communities on Lemmy are awesome. Political communities are terrible and the people who are mad at ya in those, will follow you to non-political communities just to downvote and harrass. It’s toxic.

But that’s humans? It’s always been like that, everywhere at all times. The only thing that’s changed, maybe, is that Lemmy is growing and there’s more discussion in general so of course the absolute number of things that cause name-calling has grown too, just like the absolute number of things that don’t.

That’s not true. Go to youtube and read the comments under any lofi video but that’s just one example. When Lemmy just started it was a place for people to escape the fanatics and now it’s becoming more toxic.

Your right about the doom scrollers part. Everyone on Lemmy atleast on the larger subs are always negative. Politics are dominating the main subs and explore page. It’s such a turn off. Politics needs to generally stay out if the lime light. Instead of doom posts thrown in your face. Non stop.

You’re right that it’d be nice if there was more going on.

I can be negative. But I love people and want the best for everyone. What I don’t like are the toxic systems of control that some people are under, and some people follow. Aand sometimes I can be swept up in the injustice, and lose my patience with extreme followers.

I apologise in advance to this community if I make someone’s mood worse, instead of better. I can often fail, and yet we should all strive to be a healthy member of the communities we inhabit!

My theory is that for-profit social media companies push conflict and controversy because it increases “engagement.” So, people are conditioned to be hostile and hiss like a cat at the first sign of disagreement (real or imagined). Lemmy, obviously, has different incentives.

It’s happening on Mastodon and BlueSky too. I try to respond with kindness and sincerity. (I don’t always succeed. I kind of suck at it, to be honest. But if we all even can halfass human decency, it’ll be better than most of the internet.)

It’s probably a downstream effect of the souring mood in the United States as the consequences of the current administration and our slide into fascism become increasingly apparent. Can’t speak for the rest of the world, but it’s hard to believe things are getting better out there.

i noticed that too. i chalk it up to people are always seeking approval and they want to tell express to everyone how the think and feel in hopes that people will express the same. its not everyone id say at most 30%. also you have to keep in mind that this is where the reddit rejects go (i can say that word because i got banned off of reddit lol).

another user got mad and attacked me for saying “my morality and logic is different” and said nothing about why my differences is bad.

See, that’s the problem. I don’t think the world is getting “worse,” it’s just the doomscrollers on Lemmy wanting it to be worse to fit their own twisted narratives.

I think a lot of Lemmy posters are depressed and actually want everyone else to be depressed.

I don’t think the world is getting “worse,” it’s just the doomscrollers on Lemmy wanting it to be worse to fit their own twisted narratives.

For many MANY groups it is getting objectively worse.

        For those in the USA:

        • if they are trans they are at risk for violence or legal consequences for simply going in a public bathroom.
        • if they work for the federal government they have lost or are at risk for losing their livelihood.
        • if the weren’t a natural born citizen of the USA they are at risk for deportation to a prison in El Salvador irrespective of their circumstances of student visa, asylum visa, green card holder, even naturalized citizens.
        • if they are a women, their lives are now at risk from preventable disorders if they get pregnant
        • if they are old or disabled they are now at risk of being declared dead and having their retirement Social Security income cut off
        • if they are a child they are at risk of dying from preventable diseases (like measles or whooping cough) even with decades old effective vaccines available, but not used.
        • if they are poor they are at risk for possible hunger and starvation as basic food assistance has been cut around the country deemed as “waste”
        • if they are a veteran needing medical care they are now at risk from cuts to staff that facilitate care for the people that stood in defense of our nation.

For our great historical allies of Canada and Mexico:

        • they are getting their economies destroyed because they trusted the USA to honor its own written treaties.

For the rest of the world:

        • they just today the world got an unjustified kick in the shins with nearly global trade tariffs from the USA.

The only group that aren’t generally hurt yet are: well off older white men

As a member of that group I find it fucking disgusting what is being done to everyone that isn’t in this group at the hands of this group.

It very demonstrably is. Credit card debt is at record highs, home ownership is down, rents are a bigger proportion of salary than they’ve been in like a century, one in every five children in the US face food insecurity, incarceration is the highest in the world by far both in volume and per capita, people are going bankrupt with medical debt at record rates.

Just because you don’t want to face up to it doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

You can keep your false righteous indignation. How can you claim to tell person in an El Salvador prison right now its “no worse off”? Please, explain that to me. How about a fired federal worker? Is it “no worse off” for them now they’re unemployed?

I lived through the 80’s. Try living then and telling me that life is worse now. lol

I already told you I’m an older, well off, white man. Yes, I lived through the 80s too. How is that relevant at all? You’re we should be happy now because we don’t have 12% interest rates yet and stagflation is how we should be okay with trump destroying the world economy for likely the better part of the upcoming decade? Why stop your measure over 40 years ago, long before most of the people here were even born?

Why not tell interracial married couples “Try living in 1966 and not being able to get legally married to your spouse of a different race. lol”

Why not tell women and “Try living in 1918 and not being able to vote. lol”
